  1. Yeah, the borders meeting was always a good one as well. Shame it's all over. Will be in touch - you fancy coming over here for some lamping? Plenty of bunnies about.
  2. Great stuff - looks very responsive. Keep the jumps low while he's young as they can damage themselves trying to jump too high before they're physically ready for it. atb with him...
  3. Unfortunately didn't see much sport and was unable to stay out all day as I was with my then girlfriend en route to a holiday cottage we'd booked for a week. As it was it took a fair bit of convincing to get her to agree to driving miles out of our way to be able to get to the meet. Only stayed out for an hour or so before I'd had enough of her bending my ear about hurrying up Don't know if they found, but they didn't up to the point at which I reluctantly left. Can't be certain of the water but from memory I think it was the river Blackwater.
  4. OK, not a lurcher, but here's my old greyhound bitch
  5. "A Most Perfect Creature of Heaven"? That's the only deerhound book I know of that he wrote. And yes, it's a good read. From memory I think he's got a chapter in there about running deerhounds at kangaroo in Oz. His daughter lives there so he used to visit regularly.
  6. Just found this as well. This is the second bitch in the photos above (who was quite young at that Madresfield meeting) aged around 9 or 10, together with my young poodle/greyhound lurcher
  7. Thanks tiercel. Sounds good - I'll give it a go. This is one of the things I love about this site - if you ignore all the d**kheads who get into pointless slanging matches there are some really helpful people who are only too happy to pass on tips and advice.
  8. I'd say if you've never been ferreting before, the first thing to do is get out ferreting with somebody else and see if you enjoy it. The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time and money making and buying kit, then get out in the field only to discover you don't actually enjoy it. If you can't find anybody local to you, you'd be more than welcome to come out with me but I'm hardly on your doorstep.
  9. Sad to say I don't think I have any; I never got a chance to take pics as I was always asked to pick up whenever I went out with them. They were a club made up predominantly of oldish women, most of whom had several whippets with them at each meeting, so they were completely hopeless at dealing with any hares caught. I was a non-running member and in my twenties, so it was comparatively easy for me (mind you, I remember cursing my luck on plenty of occasions as I tried to run a few hundred yards across sticky arable to dispatch a screaming hare )
  10. Giro, I do have lots more deerhound pics but the trouble is it would take me hours (if not days!) to find them. I've got a massive desk drawer absolutely stuffed with packets of old prints and negatives, but they're not in any order or 'system' so the only way to find them is to literally take out each packet and go through them. There are hundreds and hundreds of packets! One day when I've got nothing better to do I'll sort through them but it ain't gonna happen any time soon I'm afraid! But here are some of the ones I sent the fella who asked for pics of my own deerhounds - Me with m
  11. You're right Neil - the slipper had a hell of a difficult job. In some places the heather was short but in others it could be as tall as three foot. And it was up and down all day; some gentle slopes but others were pretty steep. I got into it in the 80's but didn't get my first deerhound till '93. The Dava meeting was always jumping with hares - at times you could literally look around you and see 5, 6 or even more; in their winter coats they stood out a mile away. Then one year we walked miles and miles and hardly got a course. At the end of the 3 days we'd hardly made any progress through t
  12. Been trawling through my old sporting diaries and came across some photos I took at the one and only day's otterhunting I ever attended. It was with the Cork City at Ballymaquirk in 1987. These are digital photos of the original prints, so please excuse the rather poor quality. http://s56.photobucket.com/user/krawnden/media/P1010250_zps33cf6fd8.jpg.html?sort=3&o=17 http://s56.photobucket.com/user/krawnden/media/P1010251_zpsf22e20a5.jpg.html?sort=3&o=16 http://s56.photobucket.com/user/krawnden/media/P1010252_zps4f6437f6.jpg.html?sort=3&o=15 http://s56.photobucket.co
  13. Someone off here asked to see some pics of my old coursing deerhounds, and while going through my old diaries to find them I came across a few I thought I'd put up here taken at one of the joint meetings with the salukis on Dava moor near Grantown-on-Spey. (Please excuse the quality - these were old prints that I photographed with my digital camera.) 14. I agree in principle, but there's 'crap' and there's 'crap' if you see what I mean. Twigs and leaves aren't too bad. But the 1 - 2" thorn stubs from a flailed hawthorn/blackthorn hedge (that I was referring to in my "10oz sheeting" post) have to be seen to be believed. If there's a quick and simple way to get them out I've yet to find it. I've had 50 yard nets set alongside that sort of hedge that take anywhere from half an hour to an hour to clean. Easy to set the net away from the hedge for a night time drop, but for daytime ferreting where the rabbits run down the hedgeline, unless you set
  15. Thanks tiercel. The only 1.3mm I can find is 'cross braid'. Never heard of it before - http://agouti-nets.co.uk/index.php?option=com_aceshop&Itemid=101&route=product/product&sort=p.price&order=DESC&page=1&limit=25&manufacturer_id=10&product_id=48. Is this suitable? If not, can you point me in the right direction?
  16. Guess that's a resounding 'No' to the 10z then! Thanks for the replies. One more question - does it matter what diameter to use for the drawcord? Have seen 1mm, 2mm and 3mm nylon. Any preferences guys?
  17. Krawnden i have tried to PM you but your inbox is full, atb. Have made space now - try again
  18. Ignorance is no defence in law. Please remember that any posts relating to illegal activities will be removed with no explanation, and that posters will be warned using the forum warn system. as a question...what about shooting ducks and geese under a full moon? Ducks and geese aren't game. According to Wikipedia, "game is defined in law by the Game Act 1831. UK law defines game birds as including: pheasant, partridge, black grouse, red grouse, ptarmigan, coot and moorhen." I was somewhat surprised by the last two.
  19. Not knocking your vet, but as said by others there's no harm in getting a 2nd opinion. If you can't get to a greyhound bone man I'd recommend a McTimoney chiropractor. I had a deerhound bitch that couldn't walk properly - she was stumbling around as if she was drunk. My vet was adamant she had luxating patella and they'd have to operate to fuse the knee joint. I didn't believe him for a minute and went to a McTimoney woman. The deerhound stumbled in and after a 20 minute session she walked out up on her toes right as rain. Closest thing to a 'miracle cure' I've ever seen. Not trying to get you
  20. No guarantees with that. I had a greyhound bitch that was chewing wooden doors and frames so I spent about an hour carefully painting every wooden surface within her reach with a real blow-your-head-off chilli paste. Let the bitch in and the moment she smelt it she just licked the whole lot off
  21. I've never done any net making before but am planning to have a go at making my own quickset longnet. Quite a few of the places I shall use it are alongside thorn hedges that get flailed every year. As a result the ground is absolutely littered with all sorts of crap that likes nothing better to do with itself than tangle itself up in the net. Anybody use 10z longnets? If so, d'you think the extra thickness would cut down on the crap that gets caught up?
  22. Like LFM says get your own ferret. In my view it's not fair to expect somebody else to provide the ferts for you to break your dog to them.
  23. I think you'll have to give him time - he associates running a rabbit at night with an electric shock. He might get over it in time, but he might not. Electric fences are a nightmare - I hate the bloody things. My current lurcher got tangled up in one a few weeks after I got him and I had a hell of a job to get him out of it. He associated me with the pain and it took months for me to re-build his trust, and even longer before I could take him through the field where it happened. Good luck - you have my sympathies.
