Thanks for the advice. Will have a crack at it.

That's exactly how I would imagine it to be in an ideal world. I'm just curious as to what happens when things don't go like clockwork, ie 2 rabbits seen, one a much better prospect than the other but dog takes off after the 'wrong' one. Or dog runs something that, for whatever reason, you don't really want it to run. Just flick the beam off? Or let things take their course?

Any of you red hot shots able to kill birds on the wing? Years ago I worked with an old boy who reckoned he could do it when he was younger. Could have just been bigging himself up - I never saw him do it. But I'm just curious to know if there's anyone on here who can do it.

I start pups off on the slip,,,,and as there experience grows,,they kind of learn them selfs,,,,I do tend to give a comand,,I can't help myself,,,,but it's a kind of muffled hissed whisper if you know what I mean,,,and it's always the same two words day or night,,"git on"When I'm lamping and I'm sure most lads are the same,,I quickly cast the lamp over the area and make a mental note of where the bunnys are,,,usually with an experienced dog,,,they know too,,,then pick out your target... I think the important part of the dog training ,,,is the recal and walking at heel,,,I don't mean like one

My take on it is that there's no rush, and in answer to your question - no, you're not doing the slightest bit of harm holding him back. But at half whippet he's probably just about ready to make a start on some easy squatters, but my advice would be not to overdo it. Good luck...

i've always used a slip lead in the past, but planning to get my youngster going without. To those that don't use one - d'you give the dog the command to run? Or does the dog decide for itself?

Can't help you with one I'm afraid but I just googled Garmin astro as I was interested to see what range they have and what sort of price they are. This page http://www8.garmin.com/ seems to suggest you wouldn't be able to use it in the UK. I might have got that wrong, but it's probably worth your while double checking before you shell out for something that might turn out to be a white elephant. Good luck...

I've been cutting back a yew tree at work today and cut out 6 or 7 forks that might possibly be worth making catties from. But I've never made one before and am clueless about where to begin. Does the wood need to dry out before you do anything? Should I strip the bark off while the wood's still green? Also, does it matter if the forks are uneven? On some of them one fork is noticeably thicker than the other.

Less food and more exercise

Thanks for all the comments. Will see how things progress...

My previous lurchers have never really cottoned onto picking up squatters on the beam. But my current youngster knows full well what they are and is trying his hardest to catch them but hasn't managed any yet. He runs at them full pelt and just as he's about to strike they take off. So because of his momentum at that moment of committment he then has a lot of ground to make up by the time he's turned and got going again. If he ran out a bit slower and more controlled I think he'd be more likely to take them. And if they start to run before he gets to them he's nowhere near as likely to be wron

Opineons Heavy Or Light Tall Or Small
krawnden replied to D Lloyd's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think the 'not too fast' bit is crucial if you want something for really rough ground. Also if really rough then I'd be wanting something no smaller than about 23 - 24" or else it'll probably often find itself unsighted. -
Thanks for sharing stevo - 'Out of Town' was one of my favourite programmes as a kid. Lovely to see some of the old clips again.

Looks impressive for a first effort - well done!

Great photos - thanks for sharing. Loved that one of the rabbit disappearing into the wall just in time!

I would say that if you plan to use the pup for ferreting you should break it to ferrets now rather than wait till its older. It's a piece of cake when they're pups but if you leave it till it's ready to start work it might see it as something to be killed. In the heat of the action you can get rabbits bolting and being quickly followed out by ferrets and the lurcher must be 100% steady with the ferret or it could easily go badly wrong.

I used to have a jill that I did a bit of ratting with. Didn't use nets - just bolted them to dogs. And I know a couple of people who are right into it. And pretty soon I shall be having a go again as I saw today that one or more rats have taken up residence in my compost heap. I think the reason your mentor told you not to do it is that if you do a lot of it, sooner or later the ferret's going to take a pasting from a rat. I guess if it's a really bad pasting you could lose the ferret (though depending on how long ago you're talking about, maybe back then a vet wouldn't have been able to

Boergreyhound Breeders In South Africa?
krawnden replied to SAFalconer's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
SAFalconer - I just googled boergreyhounds and the first result that comes up is someone in Bloemfontein who appears to breed both boergreys and racing greys (plus he has a few salukis too) - http://greyhoundjbm.yolasite.com/boergreyhounds.php Any good to you? Even if he's nowhere near you I'd get in touch with him if I was you as he possibly knows of other breeders. Good luck... -
Very rarely for sale and a bit pricey when it is. I'd love to read it myself if anyone would sell a copy? I think i'm right in saying there was only one fairly small print run so there just aren't many copies out there. I got mine straight from Kenneth and I'm afraid it's not for sale

That archived post on boergreyhounds made really interesting reading - good luck in your search SAFalconer -
I don't remember ever seeing anything in the mainstream press Maximus. Would love to hear about it if you do manage to find it. The Field ran a piece on deerhounds about 15 years back and the cover carried a photo of Seamus Caine sitting in a boat with two of his ('Killoeter') hounds on the shore of a loch. I've got it lying around somewhere but can't find it at the moment, but you can see the cover photo here - http://scottish-deerhound.com/forum/5-general-deerhound-chat/20309-magazine-article

I'm all for helping other people out and over the years have taken loads of different people hunting, coursing, shooting, lamping, ferreting and fishing. And I've been fortunate to have been invited out by plenty of people too. But IMO there's a big difference between taking a person out and putting an unknown dog with your ferrets. I did it once years ago - a lad asked if he could come ferreting with me and bring his dogs. He told me they were fine with ferrets. One of them was ok but the other most definitely wasn't - it went for my ferret and it's only the fact it happened right under my no

As I said to Giro, got plenty more pics but it's a question of finding them - all in a big drawer unsorted. One day when I get time...
