its dark underground, the rabbits cant tell the difference! I think if you miss a ferret when ferreting regardless of its colour you aren't paying attention, i notice every movement when i am out polecat or albino i see them if they emerge! rabbits are a similar shade to my polecats! i see the rabbits when they come out too!

good to see you appreciate the ferts, not enough do, a decent ferret will pay you back many times over!

Do people really whack their ferrets on the head to save a vets bill?
COMPO replied to Cornio's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Euthanasing your own animals is not illegal in the UK (one of the few things that aint) but causing un-necessary cruelty is an offence, probably best to use a gun to ensure instant death if the need arises! I have taken ferrets to teh vets before, the main problem is their knowledge of ferrets is poor! I have also put to sleep my own ferrets when they were in a very very bad way! it breaks my heart as they earn me money through rabbits -
my favourite is me ssat on my ferret box, with a few bunnies and my little dog, it seems to be what ferreting is about for me, also like this one of teh rabbits on a walking stick I like the one Frank put up!

Cant you house the ferret outside or on a balcony or such? Dont you have any outside space, a garage/shed etc.......

I want to come back as one of WOODGA'S ferrets

He aint a cross, he's a Teckel (working bred dachshund) yes he marks holes, works cover and pins the rabbits in nets till i get there http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/sunsong/UKTeckel/ukteckel.htm My last day out was yesterday......basically no rabbits left

I have two polecat hobs that you could use however they take after their owner and are not that small good luck in your search for a small one, my uncle used to say small ferrets were fed down not bred down! and to be honest i have seen all sizes from small hobs and small jill's!

Lots of people make/use shaped nets like you describe The theory is that it puts the most netting where you need it in the centre and as such also saves materials where they aren't needed, they are also meant to fit round holes better? and i would guess it would make them lighter to carry there being that bit less string to them? An old chap i know makes some like this as well as double pegged ones (poke nets) and different sizes etc.......

what you need is a chainsaw and an oak tree!

the name JCR crew does sound like a south london street gang but they are dedicated ferreters and post vid's and pics, good on them and long may they continue, i too would consider a dvd if and when it comes out! JCR you asked for a few pics of others days out, here's a few recent trips/mornings out, probably my last trip this season tomorrow morning. I ferret solo, perhaps i need a CREW?

Ferreters are no better than Badger Baiters
COMPO replied to Pembshunter's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Ask them if they are vegetarians? If they eat meat, have they ever killed their own food?? If not then they are hypocrits and at least you are a honest person rather than a hypocrit like them... Try it and watch them think. -
This part of the season is just clearing up patches that you have left/avoided or missed, so today saw me doing a few small warrens that had nothing in but the farmer was moaning about The Lads, the two polecat hobs and my dog pup after showing willing and doing the small warrens he can see from his house, then to the boundary and a large bramble patch....i used the longnet as it was still in-penetrable 4 from the brambles The locator had started to only work intermittently, so i took evreything back to teh car thinking i would call it a day, the farmer ca

Socks is right The thing with Kids is that you cant put an age on when and what needs explaining, my 10 year old lad has an head on him older than his 10 years, he seriously knows all he will ever need to , however his best mate at school doesn't have and so Socks has a point, and a sex toy is completely different to explaining sex! This isn't the place for that kind of Rabbit pic. Saying that i think i have been guilty of a similar offence on another forum when someone mentioned a probe they used when digging that they painted pink! however if someone had pointed out the ki

i read it and presumed he would let them have the catch? as in let it go with those tagging along......but then again i couldn't see the point in letting any rabbits go, they all can be eaten and/or sold!
-
the one my ferret chewed yesterday ....not really ugly, but it was after Shadow had moved its ear to the front of its face! leaving it with its skull showing and the hole where its ear should be
-
you can only catch whats there! I saw about 10 run into this warren as i was walking towards this embankment, seeing them all go in, made my mind up of which warren to do!
-
Comparative to previous years.. yes there are still a few about, natural wastage normally reduces the population besides whatever control you do I tend to ferret the same warrens and areas of land the same months every year.......had 16 today where last year i had 8!
-
a big gang of ferreters and a decent bag! golf courses are nice to ferret aint they!
-
was going to post these pics earlier , but there was some minor domestic issues to deal with (we are currently decorating and i helped her clean up as she had painted a couple of walls while i was out ferreting, we ate lunch together when i got back) The warren that i did this morning 15 bolted and 1 two foot dig= 16 rabbits the rabbit that didn't bolt and the offending ferret (the one i got from bobnets) that did the damage shown Sometimes his balls were in the snow.....not in this pic though as it was all padded down where i had been walking

Just to add a bit further, the lad i was ferreting with today used to live in France! Teckels are very very common there. In fact you would expect a continental hunter to have a Teckel where we in the UK would expect people to have a Jack Russell, they are that common and widely used abroad And on the continent it really is a one size fits all, they will take the dog , digging, on a wild boar drive, wildfowling whatever they are doing that day! My Teckel is my ferreting dog at th emoment, he is only 6 months old, but will also be my rough shooting dog and ratting dog and whatever
