Its actually Teckel....its the european (german/french) name for the breed that in this country is incorrectly called the Dachshund......when the first Teckels arrived in the UK, i imagine the conversation went something like...English man...what are those? german man explaining their role rather than the name of the breed.....they are dachs (badger) hundes (dogs), they were called Teckels n europe since creation....the Dachshund we see today has really suffered at the hands of teh KC and as such imported hunting teckels are stil called teckels so you know the difference! In Germany they a

there are a few working them here....most are used by stalkers for locating wounded deer, i also know of people who work them below ground on fox, a falconer who uses one for flushing for his birds, a fair few use them above ground in cover. some use them for more than one role! I have a 6 month old dog pup. To get a decent teckel from imported working stock they tend to be dearer than a working terrier.

What annoys me about my shed is my lads bike, the kids toys and stuff the iwfe insists on putting in there etc.....its due a clean out, but i could never fit a fire in! and it currently has my two hob ferrets in it I like it clean and tidy shed where you can find stuff

My Ferrets spend all winter together in a large double storey hutch.....anyway at the weekend i noticed one of the hobs Testicles had dropped, so i thought i would seperate the hobs from the jills I left the 3 jill's in the double hutch and put the two hobs in the spare hutch which is on top of the double one... went out by torch light this evening to clean out, feed and water and check on them The spare hutch i had put the Hobs in...in the top corner of the bedding area....an inch square hole , the wood is a bit damp and it looks like the hobs have picked a hole in the wood and f

Good pics and looks a nice place to ferret! Artic, we will have to arrange a trip as we mentioned on PM......I will speak with the ferret permit officer (wife) and you will have to let me know which sundays you have spare!

I remember a few years ago, teh out laws had come to visit, we all went for a walk with the dog, the wife had lost a fair bit of weight she used to be a porker anyway she was pointing something out to her dad and waved her hand.................her wedding ring flew off and down an embankment covered in scrub! me , my lad and the father in law did a hands and knees search of where we thought it had fallen for an hour .........went home I bought a cheap metal detector and went back up, several days later after trying every day no luck Borrowed a proper job metal detector

Yeah i'm well happy! It is a draconian piece of law.......we need to revert to deed not breed..........especially as they tried to legislate against a type rather than a defineable breed....leaving it open to interpretation! a dangerous dog is a dog that is dangerous, because of its behaviour rather than what it looks like! Chris I prefer Tea...white no sugar

I was thinking more of kids getting exploited , i know its experience for them but surely they cant be expected to work 8 hrs for example in all weathers for a couple of quid & a drink of pop There not expected to, its really not like a job at all, not like your employed or anything just turn up. If they want to go they can, most kids are with parents anyway. ATB, HJ I would agree; BUT then if people expect a "wage" structure, maybe it then becomes a job of sorts, taxes get paid and rules and regs enforced. Or maybe not and the above holds true! I think th

Interesting, Micky and Maltenby and a couple of others......i tend to agree. Its a dog not a kid! The worst thing you can do in an emergency rescue situation is make yourself also a victim so that others may have to risk their lives to get you out......a damage limitation theory! that said it would depend on my knowledge of teh water! If i knew it wouldn't go over my head and that i could break the ice...i may attenpt a rescue definetly if i had a rope and someone to pull me back! Someone on another forum pointed out he waded most of the way and broke the ice to give himsel

Thats a fair worry......the problem there stems from the crime and disorder act....this made it more than the police responsible for fighting, preventing and detecting crime.....so the councils became involved! The new legislation is i believe is a police only power (it may include contractors employed by teh police who are computer experts) Trappa the legislation i believe you are on about is the one to do with cctv and directed surveilannce....and to be honest i know nothing about it! I do know a little about the legislation in question here though about online paedophiles

This will only be used for online predatory paedo's thats why it needs authority so high up.......the chief constable isn't going to be authorising this for minor matters......

Sad i know...i thought about this topic when my pc was switched off....Just got to work! I reckon a way round the tax issue...i have already banged on about "gifts" but the shooting season goes over Christmas..........the keeper could keep a record of which beaters turn up on what days....then at Christmas you get a gift from the shoot proportionate to how many days you have attended....and an extra gift for the dog? especially as most folk are off work over christmas and there are usually shoots on boxing day and between christmas and the new year!
-
as i mentioned but then rambled on about I reckon all beaters should get a Gift! whether thats a brace and a few quid or just a few quid i think all shoots that are paid shoots should give a gift....not a wage but a gift! then no tax and as its a non-paid role then working hours dont apply......but the health and safety gestapo have already got into shoots aint they as they state that beaters are employed and workplace rules apply! ....so perhaps we are already employed when beatinga nd tax is in-evitable? I used to like beating , i have beat on a paid shoot as well as a family synd

Well pre-ban some lads were warned repeatedly about coursing on land on the outskirts of Leeds by the farmer, in the end one dog got shot Now who do you think prosecuted the farmer? the police said the farmer was within his rights to do it, the lads could nt afford it, so who did press charges? the arsepca thats who for inflicting pain on the dog, said it was inhumane So the headshot may be a way the lad coul go perhaps? just a thought Y.I.S Leeview Leeview I know that farmer....LOL Compo Pm me...did you know the lads.......i remember the story in the papers and th

Victor i think there is a cultural mis-understanding between the UK (europe) and yourself in OZ Beating is where you attend a shoot, and flush pheasants and other game birds towards a line of guns....the guns pay to be there and to shoot and part of the payment works its way to the beaters (there are other types of driven shoots, some where the guns take it in turns to beat towards each other, syndicates and family shoots etc....rather than paid guns) A lot see beating as a sport in itself, it gives lads a chance to work a spaniel or terrier at flushing game.........but usually the

That about it! I used to go beating quiet a bit! It was hard to vote cos i wanted to vote for the top 2.....beaters with skill's and knowledge should be paid more and so should those with well trained dogs whatever the breed! Last shoot i beat on...i think it was about £17 a day or such and a beer at lunch there was a few lads who were un-employed or worked part-time a few who were retired and they beat on all the local shoots at every opportunity and topped their income up considerably during the shooting season! Tax? thats a sore point......it seems a lot of hassle

to the person who stated that "bushing" is a new term/thing! Rabbiting and Ferreting a BFSS booklet i have the third edition was published in 1966.....i dont know when the first edition was published but i think it was in the 50's, has a part the last chapter entitled "rabbiting with dogs" and the practice he describes is what we now refer to as bushing! he discounts the use of running dogs and describes a small sporting bobbery pack of terriers and small hounds In fact Bushing is merely hunting in its most basic form! a few dogs hunting something (usually a rabbit) together followed b

Nice box lads well done to your papa for knocking you one up, IMO those holes are fine, I've never had or heard of a ferret overheating in the working sesaon ever!!! would nt bedding i.e shavings, straw/hay or paper tissues cause them to overheat? Comfort first for my ferrets Y.I.S Leeview I agree with Leeview if the ferrets overheat in a box its cos your wandering round a show in the summer....not out in the frost and cold of winter! A few holes for ventilation and a bit of fresh air, are fine!

every rabbiting opportunity is different! I have a 100 yard longnet and a few stop nets (short nets for gates and cutting through hedges) when i got bought the longnet i used it pretty exclusively ( i also have 100 pursenets) and to be honest lots of situations can be done with longnets......i have done hedges, open warrens and ditches with mine! but to be honest i have switched back to using the pursenets more and more at the moment....but thats mainly due to having more land now with smaller warrens on them......i can run the longnet out though quicker than i can set 30 pursenets ....its

an old ferreters tale! I reckon in days gone by, they presumed by the lack of action that the ferret had fallen asleep, these days we can locate and track the ferret and know that although we haven't seen the ferret for a little while its still moving around! and people are a lot more ready and willing to dig now than in the past when they had to use a liner etc..... unless your ferret has narcolepsy....its not going to be dropping asleep in a warren
