  1. Annemarie so are we going to get organised with the letter writing and PR? if we got half the UK members on here to write a letter to their MP , just think of the impetus we could generate! I (we) could even write a blanket letter and pin it on as many hunting forums as possible and get everyone to e-mail a copy to their MP's through the "write to them" website (the website for conatcting your MP).....it would then only take people a couple of minutes! we could also start another of those online e-petitions to number 10! I bet on a poll here very few will have e-mailed their M
  2. Let him sleep..........he will eat if he's hungry...i know you did eventually But when asleep thats when your body stores fat and repairs injuries and muscles etc........... sumo wrestlers only eat one meal a day at the end of training and then go to sleep ....this helps them pile on weight muscle and fat...........sleep is as important as food and water for the body.......i work shifts and after working nights and not getting lots of sleep i often end up with minor niggles and illnesses! Hope he gets well for you
  3. wasn't it on that Robson Green fishing programme where they showed two bow hunters culling carp at night with a lamp during the closed season for hunting! extreme fish (lamp)ing! the arrows were attached to the rod by a line and reel, and they then used the bow as a rod and reeled in the carp! It appealed to me, shame we cant do a bit here with bows as it would appeal to me , an american lad i work with used to do archery in teh states, when he found out i hunted and shot he felt like we had something in common, he used to mainly shoot at competitions, but his instructor hunted bea
  4. Was it an old chap called Frank? retired PC ? I am also in the North Bucks / TVP area. Helps that he is into shooting himself! They have been good with me, relatively quick with the application and granting, i have had time off work previously with stress and since granting have had issues with work that someone at work thought the licensing department would like to know about! anyway they have dealt with me fairly and proportionately through out! No complaints! but i only have a shotgun certificate
  5. I agree with lurcher lass and a few others have made valid points like maltenby. The vast majority are indifferent. Anti's are brainwashed and the MP's listen to who writes letters the most. We lost it when it became a class issue, the idiotic Labour Mp's didn't see the wider consequences and were that mad at the "toffs in red coats" that they didn't care for a bit of collateral damage. I have said this millions of times and will say it again....I blame the Countryside Alliance.....the old BFSS represented everyone and that showed by the booklets they put out etc.......THE CA we
  6. I think hitting them in teh centre of teh pattern is the most important point and why you have killed with 4's-8's But what andyf stated about new guns i actually think is right! Most shotguns these days are made and designed with clays in mind, lots of people buy sporter models etc..... So i reckon if you have a new gun or an old gun you need to do some pattern tests and see which loads produce the best pattern......and i think you will find some guns perform better with the lighter loads and hence will allow you to kill better and more consistently I was out shooting last nig
  7. It isn't man made, it is a tropical disease first discovered in South America. It has been released both accidentally and on purpose by man though. bang on It was naturally occuring in the native sub-species of rabbits in south america It was however refined a little and the strain made more virulent in a lab, then released into wild rabbits in australia and as you say spread both accidentally and intentionally spread accross the rest of the world! we have a french doctor to blame for bringing it to europe to look after his garden! it was then only a short hop accross t
  8. sounds fun.........the wife has gone away with her sisters a couple of times over the last couple of years....which is all ammunition for when i want a hunting break..........been thinking of shooting boar in France or something similar a part time keeper i used to know used to go with a few mates every year to the isle of mull doing similar to yourselfs, fishing, shooting, stalking and i believe they even did a bit of ferreting and roughshooting
  9. a priest is a good idea.........it will make the karate chop method a lot more effective for someone of less substantial stature!, holding by the back legs and hit at the base of the ears as hard as you can and job done! It will look better but the people i have seen use the foot on head method are just doing it so they can use both arms and their whole bodies strength to pull and twist and its very quick and its a dead rabbit and not under your foot quick enough Can you buy priests at fishing shops ....dont some fishermen use them for killing fish??? i dont know as my hands are bi
  10. Just to clarify my view point. a dog should only be bred from when it has proven itself in what ever field of work you have chosen for it. a terrier should work fox , a hound should draw cover a lurcher should run and catch its game etc! But Form will only Follow function if we pick the healthiest workers and avoid naturally recurring illnesses and conditions. If the dog is not healthy it shouldn't be used for breeding no matter how good a worker it is or has been. So a dog with an undescended testicle may be healthy and the best worker you have ....however if he passe
  11. he lost his testicle to cancer, it had descended correctly in teh first place! and you cant compare people to dogs.....otherwise we end up in the realms of the facists......their ideals about geneaology and types of people was actually a mis-quoted scientist who thought we could improve the next generation of people by compulsarly sterising thick people and those with illnesses ....and only the most pyshically fit and intelligent humans should actually have children (it was then twisted to include ethnic groups) thus in a few centuries of selectively breeding ourselves the human race w
  12. please re-read my entire post..........Working ability is the main reason we should be breeding from.............but we must also try and improve the health as well as teh working abaility for the next generation! There is no point breeding a cracking worker thats going to get cancer and die because of a retained testicle....when we can breed a cracking worker thats not! and retained testicles are more common in show dogs!
  13. some breeds take longer than others for the nuts to descend........be careful when taking a pup for its first jabs as the vet if they cant find both will tell you all about this condition and the dangers (which are real as Dawn states above) and try and get the mutts nuts off before he has had chance to let them descend........My dog has both proudly swinging in his sacks! however on his first visit to teh vets one wasn't quiet there....vet starts going on about all teh above (this is a small 8 week old puppy) and saying I will have to book him in for castration! I think the vet saw it as an o
  14. Yeah, I was wondering if their heads came off if I pulled too hard! And seeing as I'll will be a little heavy handed first time just to make sure I killed it, I guess I'll probably end up with it's head in my hand! The chop method sounds good but how do I know if I've actually killed it or just stunned it? Maybe best to neck it afterwards just to be on the safe side! Any suggestions on how to train the dogs to actually kill the rabbits, then I wouldn't have to face pulling their heads off in the first place! I am quiet good at the chop....but i think thats due to my size and
  15. i have cross posted it.hope you dont mind.........but it is funny!

to be honest thats just a reason to take the gun away, any shotgun cwould go off if dropped and it must have been closed, a good reason to always keep the breech open and empty. reading the article the gun was open but had a cartridge in, it snapped shut and went off when he dropped it.............i dont think he has had the gun/certificate revoked......the police will have seized it to get it tested to enable them to test it as they stated that their tests showed it was faulty and could discharge without the trigger being touched! which would corroborate the couples version of

  20. Poodles were/are gun dogs in france, but the miniture ones were really lap dogs it was the standard that worked saying that i knew a miniture poodle owned by a pigeon keepers wife that was a demon on rats under the pigeon sheds and would work a hedge like a terrier/hound after rabbits! and it had a sensible haircut one length all over! good luck with the bedlington pup, i have always liked the look of the working types ones and have worked a really good first cross beddie greyhound
  21. I like border terriers, my brother has one It costs about £12 a pup to register them with the KC......so i can understand another 20 quid or so on the price to cover the costs/postage etc...of registering the pup, possibly a little more if you get teh extended pedigree going back 10 generations, and at such a small price why not register them if they are eligible It really doesn't justify doubling the price of the animal though. as i say its about £20 However demand can affect price, and perhaps there are other issues here...........are other dogs sold too cheap? Perhaps
  22. My guess is that your shotgun is fairly new and consequently probably built to shoot 28gr (small shot) clay loads, most new shotguns are, and primarily used for the clay shooting disciplines, therefore your gun patterns well with Plasi Wad 28gr cartridges, and as a result you will score better when using the 'proper' ammo. I shoot two different 1970's vintage fixed choke Winchesters, one is a 27 1/2" O/U Skeet gun and the other a 28" S/S Model 23, both of these shoot best with 32gr fibre Wad no 5's, and do not like the high velocity 28gr shells at all because they were designed to use fibre w
  23. On my house keys with me all the time, if i am in the house they are on the bookshelf and when i go to bed they are on the bedside table! spare in a seperate keycode safe! I was told that you can leave the spare with a mate as long as that mate doesn't have a key to your house....i.e. he cant get into the house so cant get into the safe I know someone that had his rifle stolen when he was burgled, he left the keys upstairs in a draw in his bedroom.............he managed to retain his FAC, and now keeps his keys with him at all times, his spares are locked away at work.....
