    Ha, I am doing creosote tomorrow, but not for the chooks, they live in a brick building, 2nd world war ammo bunker in fact, it's good as it has all the ventilation built into the walls but needs no maintenance and is secure

    Thanks Stevo, I would most certainly be interested in trying some eggs, I have been googling dorkings, they do look a nice bird. Got my hands full today fencing another part of the orchard off for them, they love been able to roam amongst the trees.

    Hi Stevo, Certainly some nice rare breeds about, but finding a reputable seller seems to be the hard thing. I would be very interested to see what your birds are like, I nearly always have broodies and a couple in particular are excellent, have always shied away from buying 'fertile' eggs due to too many unknown variables, but I often get given various fertile eggs (hence my mixed rabble at present). I would certainly be up for trying dorkings though.

    Thanks for the suggestion lurcherphill, however I have had dealings with peafowl before and they were quite a nuisance to everyone involved, so although I have the space for them I would probably give that one a miss

    Excellent news, pleased you got the result we would all have liked, I have a lot of gear from them in my business, never had a problem with anything, but good to hear your experience was a good one

    I have 5 gallon of plum on the go, will be doing some more maybe next week when the next plum tree is ready. Am looking forward to my first go at cider as I have apples and pears coming out my ears.

    b*****d wasps are getting the apples quite bad, but they are not properly ripe yet, these seem to be the best ones but more on the other trees !

    Got my first 5 gallon plum wine on the go, and managed to get the Mrs to make some jam. Just waiting for apples and pears for the cider now

    I have two excellent broody hens down at the moment, both a black orpingtons, they go down every year and don't come back out until they have chicks ! I keep thinking about getting some eggs, but finding a reputable seller with pure breeds is not going to be easy.

    Oh god, I have orpingtons, sussex, leghorns, appenzellers, RI red, wyndottes, welsummers, and lots along those lines, but wanting to get more into the rarer breeds now I have been looking at the ayams these last few weeks and quite fancy them, seems a lot of dodgy ones around though.

    I have just enlarged my poultry pen to just over an acre, and I have all the usual farmyard breeds, and a few other rarer breeds, they all run as a rabble and do what they want, but now I am looking to get more into trio's of the rare breeds, but undecided what to go for, suggestions please, ideally I would like a market for any I hatch out

    Thanks for the replies, have heard of fruit flies turning wine to vinegar, air locks and Muslin seem the order of the day to cure that

    My runners totally failed this year as well, first lot didn't even come through !

    I am in the lucky situation my new home has an orchard, this year the trees are laden (and I do mean laden to the point branches are snapping, dragging on the ground....) with apples and pears, I also have a few plum trees and they are smothered in plums, any suggestions what to do with them as no way will they all get eaten, even though the plums are lovely. My first though was cider and wine, but having never made these how easy is it, suggestions, with recipes greatly appreciated.

    Still ain't a bad price for pol sussex Rob we are poor country folk trying to etch out a living mate , by the time I bought them , bought food then the electric fence went tits up each egg , (which so far amounts to 4 ) owes a fortune ..we share one there so expensive ... Tell me about it, I just had to buy a new electric fence cos charlie got in and took one of the rare breeds, on a brighter note I do get more eggs than I know what to do with

    I have a large dead walnut tree in my garden, its demise will be this weekend and I am hoping it is suitable for planking.
