  1. Had to give up my allotment when I moved last year, luckily I moved to a place with lots of ground, so need to make a start on some veg patches, I have a 8x12 greenhouse I can bring from the little, but never really used that for much other than starting plants and tomatoes, would some cold frames be a better idea ?
  2. Sounds great, but I looked online and it's just a large warming pot thing, can't find one that actually makes the soup, wish I could as love a good hearty soup,
  3. Sounds excellent, I not only enjoy a challenge, but I love animals that have a bit of character, I wish I had followed this up years ago now.
  4. Has anyone used or know anything about maino incubators ! Been offered a maino 2-600
  5. hi jok, tried to pm you but says your unable to receive new messages, so presumably your inbox is full mate.
  6. it's not the breed as such pal I think any pig over 60 or 80kg it's classed as bacon because the bigger the pig the fatter they get and then you get the really large pigs that are for sausages a friend of mine has two up his place and they are gigantic the ones got to be 400kg + he's Guna have to kill them on site though I think, well I wouldn't fancy trying to get them in a stock box anyway lol a live weight of around 110-115kg is what we send our pigs for bacon try to get porkers around -90 and hog roast around 70-75 but that's a commercial unit and they say gos make the best bacon but I'd a
  7. Superb pictures and information guys, am really looking forward to this little venture. Anyone have any health issues, apart from them eating everything in sight ?
  8. Mm, what's a good bacon and sausage pig ?
  9. First time I ever done plum, never had access to them in quantity before, but this year was much better
  10. Thank Thanks, that all makes sense, I am not to bothered about having them ready for Christmas, a Though I guess that would be a bonus, most of it will likely go in the freezer until I want it. I do love a good ham on the bone though, so that would be top of my list, not even started looking at curing meats yet. Can't see the point in getting involved in castration, and boar taint don't sound nice !
  11. Exactly, I don't care about them been friendly, although it helps when it's time to slaughter them for loading, otherwise they can be totally wild if they taste good ! Sure the Mrs will like scratching and petting them though. What did you feed them ? Sounds like weight gain pellets ? And veg. I am hoping to have a walk round the markets/shops locally and find a supply of veg to mix in, and I have a supplier of carrots, £20 for a ton, loaded with a forklift and the last ton I collected was over 2 ton ! I can also easily get wheat and barley, have an orchard so lots of apples, pears and plum
  12. I do like the GOS, and saddle backs, but have been told the Tammy's are superb eating, I don't mind them been slower growing, except it gives the Mrs longer to name them and make pets !Warm and dry wouldn't be a problem, I have lots of barns spare, I was thinking I may well end up building a pole barn in the field they are going anyway, 6 - 7 foot tall, 30 x12, enclosed on 3 sides with a roof and open front, would be handy for keeping all sorts in. May even end up with a farrowing pen if it all goes good
  13. Don't suppose you still got a career ?
  14. As per title, I have just applied for my holding number, been wanting to do it for a while, but finally getting things in place to keep a few this year. This is my first ever venture into piggies, so any advice, or tips greatly appreciated. The breeds I like the look of so far.... Tamworth, saddleback, gos, and I been offered some large black x Tamworth at a £15 each ! They will be free range but have an arc or something similar to get out the weather when they need.
  15. Just racked my plum wine from last year, and it's bloody handsome, much better than I ever imagined it could be, wish I had made more than 10 gallon now !
  16. I set up a hide today outside a chicken pen next to a muck heap, the place looks to be crawling with Roland's, no neighbours to annoy so I will be sat in that very soon with the night vision scope mounted atop my .25 rapid, bring the new year in with a bang :-)
  17. I've hatched many a brood over the winter under my bantams, go for it.
  18. Had some tonight, real nice, beat the normal field ones I get, how long they likely to stay about and can they be eaten any age ? I have what looks like quite a few more still coming through, but they have a much more button like cap, and some about 100mm across and the larger ones like I posted, they are probably 200/250 across, they are proper chunky things as well, it's a bloody great plateful in itself.
  19. Yes Jok, you was bang on the money, checked a few more and found the lilac stems, not only that, I found a whole heap more further across the field, must have. At least 200 in one spot, happy days.
  20. The ones on his ground have heard the news and decided to take the hari Kari route instead !
  21. Just been looking at the Heka machine, they sound quite good.
  22. I must admit jok, having looked at your suggestion it does bear a lot of resembelence, and it was found in one of my grass fields, close to a large hedgerow, yet has no lilac in the stem as has been suggested it should have, the stem almost fell apart as I pulled it, I will check some of the others tomorrow, be great if they are actually edible !
  23. Looking for an automatic incubator, must be able to do ducks, turkeys, chickens, preferably goose, as well as pheasant and partridge, around a 50 eggs at a time, but would consider bigger if needs be, what is out there suitable, best makes to go for etc ?
  24. If you would like to volunteer I will happily post you some !
  25. Yes, very much so, would love to find out what it is, I have quite a few growing in one of the fields, never seen them before until today.
