Not doubting you mate, some areas are choc full at this time of year, though sometimes when lamping, foxes will follow and circle round you, youngsters especially, giving the impression you've got one or two or more in each field you move to.
-
Oh no mate, sorry to here that. If that vet says he'll come good then do your best by him and get him right. I'm looking forward to seeing him run when he's right. Best of luck.

I suppose there are plenty of dogs that annoy me but if I look deeper it ain't the dog its the fecking owners and breeders. As a dog lover I can see the worth in just about any breed in the right hands. Just about all of the above breeds mentioned can make me think twice but for all round pissing me off are the multitude of bull breeds in our inner citys, huge lumps of dangerous shite with 16 and 17 year old pricks at the other end of the lead... Accidents waiting to happen..!!!

Same as the one off the Steptoe film, that dived over the rails to eat the ciggy old man Steptoe was smoking.. Classic!

Seen that many a time mate, some foxes use the play dead tactic well and pre-ban, some young dogs have hit 'em and, without getting bit, that fox has played dead and the dog let go and stood over it. Fox opens an eye and bang, up again and off! Seen one youngster hit that fox three times and give it some stick before that fox bit back and then it was game over! I wouldn't say all the dogs i've seen do it went on to make it (I just don't know) but one I owned did and forever after seen the job through, many many times. On the subect of the playing dead foxes, i know of a bloke that this ha

Ya know Davey, imo nothing at all..!! After trying many different jackets in the field, nothing has ever come close to my old Solway for 'all round' ability, feck me it was tough and the best bit about 'em is that after a few years wear it's like an old friend..! I'm deffo going to go back to one.

Good little clip mate, played it with the sound off though.

I've never been able to call a dog off quarry Stabba, nor would I want to..! As much as I like a well mannered dog, I do belive in 'basic' commands in the field and put my trust in natural ability, I really wouldn't want to own a robot. It's my responsibility on the quarry i've slipped my dog on and I don't expect it to be called off, rather like a terrierman, when that dog goes under he expects it to stay untill dug too, but he chooses the hole! Now with that said, out walking, my dogs chanced upon a young (but full sized) Heron last year, they went to grab it but though I figured they were

Good stuff Ray, keep him at it

The Who, IMO, are, the penultimate British band, a real 'first' for our shores... No one has ever got near them, (maybe the Kinks at one point) for creating a sound that was truly British born... And oh, what a sound it was..!! When the Beatles and the Stones were knocking out American born sounds, this band dug deep into there southern (England) based roots to create a new one...! Though a career that been stuttered though infighting (due to pulls between music, film making, ego's and death), they still rocked harder than any and blazed a trail for so many..! The same could be said abou

Why don't ya try the info thats been dealt to ya F&H, i've just posted back on the battery connector thred. Christ, when I started out it was a motorbike spot & battery a big tin and shit loads of tape, but we got out, made use, used trial & error and had some fecking good nights! You seem to wan't it signed, sealed & delivered... well it ain't that simple! We only got, whats we got... Get out, fiddle some more and make your silk purse out of your sows ear...!!!
-
Thats the end i was on about mate, pull the wire from it down, carefully, and when it hits the battery, strap it hard down with cable ties, it ain't goin nowhere then... And belive me, i've tested it..!!

Well thanks Poach, call a spade a spade, the last person I was expecting that from was you, but... You may have enjoyed it or not, but funnily enough, you were out with 'em just the same?? Some of the most dedicated dog men I have had the pleasure of both meeting & hunting with have, at some stage ran numbers. The thing is, your expiereience ain't everyone elses... Don't tar every one with the same brush. One last thing about numbers, because it ain't really what this thred is about... Some of the best dogs born were bred from numbers dogs, if ya don't test 'em in the fire, how'd ya know

A dog is for life not....or am I old fashioned??
Bosun11 replied to midlands_moocher's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Though thats the point 3T, 'if your re-homing, then 'your' responsible!' And if you've got anything about you, then you seek a home that will stand that dog in good stead for the rest of its life... If not, the do the 'decent thing', because, for the rest of its life.... I couldn't have that on my concience..! -
It's good goin T, back in the day it was good to hit the numbers, long nights, we all loved it! You got the pics and its that that matters , will that old L.pool record of 15 with 2 ever be beaten though.. These days, i doubt it...??

Bosun11 replied to midlands_moocher's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
In my expierience those who turn over many dogs throughout the year are not dogmen... they are 'collectors'... More driven by whats in a dog rather than what it does or can do. Yes, they'll get out a bit but their main focus is either type or look and from that are never satisfied as to whats in there kennel, because as soon as they have a conversation about coursing, they'll go and get a saluki cross, foxing, a bull cross etc etc. It's so visible on here, the 'Let's see your....' and the 'What would a deerhound x whippet x ridgeback x manchester terrier be like...' threds. 'A dog is for life' is a slogan to advertise a rescue centre. Does that line apply to us, in my opinion, yes, because although I see no reason for keeping any dog that, with every effort, does not make the grade, it should be on everyones concience to ensure that dog is found the right exit from you, whatever that would be. I certainly wouldn't like to think that any dog that has left my keeping would be living the rest of its life in abject misery, there are far better options than that. -
Would agree with you there Simo, I don't buy the Countrymans but if I have skipped through it on occasion Pennys articles are much better than the usual claptrap. As for this site, no one does more to help others with honest, sound practicle advice.. And long may she do so..!!

All done, with a spot of bale jumping on the way home, good stuff Paddy & Tilly...
-
Paddy, get your dog over here later and i'll give it a blast with Frontline, see how it goes from there.

Drop a pm to Bullterrier off here, lives in Anfield and does a fair bit of ferreting, he's also a blue (me too!) so you shouldn't go wrong. There are plenty of local spots in the Merseyside area, though first off I would look to getting yourself some local permission (do a search on here on how to go about it) and get to know your ground.

Skycat's dead right, start the wire from basic again though, start really small. I always start mine on wire because if a dog is used to putting his feet on something (fence top etc) mid jump, when he does it on wire he can come a cropper.

That's just about the cross in Walsh's book.
-
There's as good a thought to it in Walsh's book, on his thoughts on producing his ideal, always made sense to me. Though it was written in days gone by when lurchers were a rareity (at least by todays standards!!). These days why bother, starting from scratch to breed sommat with over two breeds in it would seem a waste of time and effort to me. Most folks 'ideal' dog is already out there and constantly available, it's just simply folk don't do enough with 'em to see if it is or could be 'the one', they never give there dogs the opportunity and think that whats in it must make it... Which is
