  1. Do people work a bitch when she is in season or give her a couple of weeks off? My bitch started her season on Tuesdsay and I'll probably lamp her tonight and catch a few rats with her on Sunday. She won't have a tough one tonight, not that she ever does due a lack of rabbits, but I'll give her ten runs perhaps if we're lucky. I've never seen this as a bad thing but I was wondering what do others do?
  2. What a cracking looking bitch and a great post. DnN... can I ask how big she is and how you found a bitch of the right breeding? Wales1234... I've a lurcher here that is part pointer but to look at you would think she was a merle whippet. I can ket you know her breeding if you wish. I've often thought of lining her with a gwp dog as I think the resulting pups would be good hunters and mouchers.

    Plodding On

Hi Pointer. Are those pure gwp's? How do you rate them? I've been keen on one for sometime as an 'all rounder'... ferreting, shooting, ratting etc. The only ones I've seen though are huge dogs. Do the bitches level out a fair bit smaller?
  4. Some big bags there guys. I'm on a top bag of.... 7!!!
  5. A lovely looking bitch. Do you still have her?
  6. Thought I recognised him... that's Moss, the collie that started the thread! He's still alive, though long retired. He's without doubt the best all round dog I've known. I'll show Hywel that picture when we're ferreting in the morning. You're right, he would have been worth using on a greyhound bitch! No,..I've had several collies,..that one belonged to Hywel,...a keen rabbiting man from Aberdare... We realy should have used him over a Greyhound bitch....too late now...
  7. A nice looking dog there Trenchfoot. Phil, was that your dog?
  8. Aye,..I've seen plenty of collies working the woods/brash...and when they are good they are very, very good,.........however,..when they are bad,...they are fecking horrid This was a good'un...
  9. The one I know would work nets well, kill rats happily, retrieve a pheasant over a five bar gate when out beating... you name it, Moss seemed able to do it! If I could guarantee one like him I'd get a pup tomorrow!

    Collies?

One of the best all round hunting dogs I've ever seen was a border collie by the name of Moss. He's long retired now but he helped his owner catch a lot of game. Does anyone use a collie for bushing?
  11. Trenchfoot... does your bitch catch much game? She looks spot on for ferreting.
  12. Joe... you're right I did give up with two spaniels. However, I gave up because ideal homes were just around the corner and I had another pup here that's much better. The lurcher is a different case... he's not going anywhere. I've just come in from five minutes 'hold training' with a tennis ball. He wasn't keen initially to have the ball placed in his mouth but we got there eventually!
  13. Some fantastic replies guys, thanks very much. You're right Penny... he would bring a ball or dummy back, but the 'fetch' command clearly isn't in there. So... how would you guys proceed in my position? How would you teach 'hold' and 'fetch' to a dog that is 17 months old? I'm not the most competent trainer but I am keen!!! I also keep spaniels and manage to get them to a reasonable standard. However, I've had two poor retrieving spaniels in the past year and the retrieving issue really is my achilles heel... I can never seem to get it sorted unless they're naturals. I sold on
  14. I've tried this Joe and he leaves the rabbit and comes in. He was hunting up a little on the lamp but I've pretty much sorted that. His recall is pretty good, not to the level of my spaniels but good enough.
  15. Well I haven't fed Scooby rabbit. I do know exactly what Joe means though as my old bitch would occasionally eat a ferreted rabbit as she had been fed them from an early age!
  16. If I can't get him to retrieve I won't be happy... A dog that brings them back to hand is an absolute pleasure to own.
  17. I was hoping someone might be able to offer a bit of advice... I've got a 17month old lurcher x lurcher dog with a good proportion of collie in him, bred out of good working parents. Scooby wasn't entered last season as he was young and immature but I've had him out a few times this season and his hunting and marking are coming along nicely. My only problem is his lack of retrieving... I did plenty of practice with him as a pup, rabbit skin dummies dropped into my hand etc. He could be a bugger in open spaces but on a track his delivery was perfect every time. He's now had a co
  18. If I didn't have a youngster here I would be coming to buy this pup. I like a dog that hunts and as I have one already with gwp in it's make up I know this pup will hunt.
  19. I was never a big fan of cats until my mrs got one. I now love him more than she does! No money could buy that cat from us.
  20. Hi, can anyone please tell me how a lithium battery should be charged to extend it's life? I've a 14ah deben lithium and I've never really given much thought to the charging. I know lithiums don't have a memory as such but should they be charged from empty on occasion? I just tend to bung mine on charge for s few hours before I go out!
  21. You can buy marker spray for livestock in a variety of colours. That's what I use.
  22. New mark one box or reconditioned?

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated. By the way... if anyone lives within an hour or two of Monmouth and wants someone to carry their game bag/bolt rabbits for their bird, then please let me know.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking to join the Welsh Hawking Club, as they meet local to me, and to learn a lot more before I go any further. Are the hawking fraternity usually willing to help new entrants to the sport? With any luck I'll get out and watch some birds flown this winter and make sure the sport is one I wish to commit to.
