  1. Yup, the EU is trying to jump on the bandwagon following the Paris massacre and introduce further restrictions by the back door. Their recent efforts to "harmonize" (i.e. make more restrictive) EU gun law generated massive opposition from both the public and member states, so now this sneaky amendment to their proposals. The proposals would apply to the UK, unless Parliament opted out. The French shooting community is already up in arms (geddit?). Sign here... http://bit.ly/gunbanpetition
  2. Still depends on the rifle. 13 fpe .177 HW97K with V-Mach, snappy, fast lock time but no recoil. 16 fpe .22 HW85, untuned, smooth but slower lock time, and kicks. If you're looking to buy a springer, rather than just asking the question for philosophical reasons, then try before you buy.
  3. Have you tested the H&Ns at every hunting range you're likely to shoot at? You may find that they drop off more or less quickly then the pellets you're used to, hence the misses. Measure out ranges at five-yard intervals, then test the pellet drop at each range, and make a note of it. If you're shooting at long range (i.e. 50m with a springer) then the drop-off is pretty rapid. Get a rangefinder if you plan on shooting at those ranges regularly -- five yards either way makes a big difference to point of impact on what is a pretty small target. Nice groups, by the way.
  4. Depends on the rifle and the power output. A tuned .177 will feel smoother than a rough .22. However, the same rifle in .22 will normally feel a little smoother to shoot than its .177 version.
  5. If he wants a 97 with a silencer, then Best Fittings make a good adapter. You'll need a 7mm Allen key to take the end cap off the factory "silencer". http://www.bestfittings.co.uk/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=180&cat=Weihrauch
  6. According to the Bisley website, they're a nominal 10.65 grains. When I weighed a sample of 20 myself, they averaged out at 10.36 grains. The .22 pellets were a little closer to their nominal 21.14 grains, averaging out at 20.72 grains. Interesting to see that they're now, at long last, offering different head sizes for the .177 pellet. Since they're manufactured by H&N, it's a bit surprising they they didn't think't thought of that before... http://www.bisley-uk.com/product_v3.php?i=BIMAA&c=500
  7. The main difference will be in the trajectory and your holdover/holdunder. You won't perceive much difference in terms of how long the pellet takes to get where it's going. Put your data into Chairgun and you'll see the difference.
  8. At 11.4 fpe and 8.4 grains, that would be 782 fps rounded up. 11.9 fpe for the Bisley Magnum's nominal 10.65 grains would be 709 fps.
  9. They're a good pellet for magnum springers. I have used the 21-grain .22 Bisley Magnums extensively in my FAC HW85, which spits them out at 16.25 fpe. They can deliver 12mm groups (.5 inch) at 33 yards, if I do my bit. They are just edged in terms of accuracy by the JSB Jumbo Monsters, which are even heavier at 25.34 grains. My 13 fpe HW97 doesn't like the .177 Magnums as much though, it prefers JSB Exact Heavies, delivering 9mm groups at 33 yards. Prior to installing a V-Mach kit in the 97, it was wickedly accurate with Weihrauch F&T Specials (4.51) and AA DFs in 4.50, but I've had to
  10. The Walther Terrus is supposed to be excellent out of the box, if you save just a few more shekels... https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Walther_Air-Rifle_Terrus_For-Sale_150610132047001
  11. Don't sweat it. Mainsprings are built to last. I've accidentally left my 97K cocked for a couple of weeks with no drop-off in power from the V-Mach spring on board. See here: http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2006/05/how-long-does-a-mainspring-last-part-2/
  12. If you trap rats, magpies or even coypus, then a 6 fpe air pistol is ideal for humane dispatch. Also useful for magpies and rats out to about 15 yards. Illegal in France, of course, so I'd never do it meself, your Honour.
  13. £150 will get you something new but of average quality, or something decent second-hand. One alternative to the second-hand route would be a Chinese gun, like the SMKs sold by Welsh Willy -- but you'll still need to add a scope and mounts. Or there's the Hatsan 60S, which is a nice little full-power shooter with an adjustable trigger. Have a look here and scroll through the different pages at the bottom. http://woodfield-gcp.co.uk/?product_cat=air-rifles Before you take the plunge, join a local club if you can. You may be able to borrow different rifles, and you'll be surprised how many ai
  14. Looks mint, and gets the job done. Does it have a V-Mach spring in it, or the original factory jobby? What kind of power output are you getting from it?
  15. I notice that both of your favourite-ever rifles have thumbhole stocks. Do you think it was the rifles themselves that did it for you, or do thumbhole stocks just suit your shooting style?
  16. Nice ex-collection. Let me guess: you used to be indecisive, but now you're not so sure?
  17. You may just have started a long-running thread. Snap. Only with a 25.39-grain JSB Jumbo Monster carrying 14.71 fpe at the muzzle, 32 yards, high shot between the shoulders from behind. Game over. For those of you who've been following the debate about the relative merits of FAC air, this may answer a few questions...
  18. Must admit, VHTV is what inspired me to buy my HW97K and get seriously into spring air rifle shooting, after a couple of disappointing flirtations with Gamos and some fun plinking with an AirMagnum 850 CO2 rifle. Saw a couple of vids of Si Pittaway shooting long-range groups with a 97 that I only thought were possible with a PCP... and that started me on the long slippery slope... Add in HuntersVermin's excellent video about installing a V-Mach kit in his 97, and my fate was sealed. There's a lot of dross on YooToob, but some gems in there too, if you look hard enough...
  19. Brain the size of a planet, and yet you haven't even thought to check out me YooToob channel? I'm deeply hurt...
  20. I normally stick a rangefinder in me pocket if I'm wandering around and may need to estimate range quickly, on an unfamiliar piece of ground. Not a criticism, jes' sayin'...
  21. Power has an influence too. My 97 shot medium-weight pellets extremely well when it had a broken spring and was shooting at 10.6 fpe -- 9mm groups @ 33 yards with AA Diabolo Fields and Weihrauch F&T Specials, 8.4-ish grains. Soon as I put in a V-Mach kit and took the power up to 13 fpe, they lost their accuracy, and now it will group like that with JSB Exact Heavies at 10.34 grains, but not with lighter pellets.
