  1. Never clean my air rifle barrels, to be honest, except to clear out the factory gunk before first use. Powder burners yes, since there's a build-up of GSR. Cue incoming from target tarts and HFT geeks...
  2. I made a bipod stick like the one in the video, but then bought a cheap n cheerful one with telescopic legs, like the legs on them there Nordic walking sticks. Much handier to carry, and can be used standing, sitting or kneeling. I use it all the time -- it's particularly useful if you spot quarry when you're out in the open, and would otherwise have to take an offhand shot.
  3. They must be wicked for hunting -- the diagram shows that you can add an "extinction tube" to the front element!
  4. If you're looking for a hunting rifle, look at a springer or a PCP. I've owned CO2 rifles, and they're great when the weather's warm, or if you're just target-shooting. They're also usable in stable environments -- for example, if you're shooting in the same indoor environment each time (chicken shed, etc.). The power drops off as the temperature drops, though, so you'd have to re-zero before each outdoor hunting session, just to be on the safe side.
  5. Smith & Wesson Model 19-3 .357 magnum. Oh, air rifles? My HW97K. Wickedly accurate.
  6. Every barrel is different, so you'll just have to suck it and see. I use the JSB Test tin for new rifles, which contains 50 of each Exact head size, plus Exact Heavies, RS, etc. AA DFs and JSB Exacts are similar, but from what I understand, a different die is used for the AAs, so they have slightly different characteristics -- same goes for Weihrauch pellets.
  7. If you already know that the AAs work, then the guy's saved you a lot of time and money! Superdomes are cheap, but my rifles hate 'em. Now stop faffing about and order some AAs online -- Uttings are cheap and deliver next day if you order before 4pm.
  8. If the groups were that bad before, washing your pellets won't make any difference. I've tried it myself, and it made no difference to everyday shooting. Maybe if you're an HFT nerd, it might... but then you'd have to weigh 'em and grade 'em too... life's too short, mate! When you say 10mm at 20m, is that a springer or a PCP? If it's a PCP, then you're definitely using the wrong pellet. If it's a springer, then you're probably using the wrong pellet -- I'd expect to see 10mm groups or better at 30m from a well-fettled springer. It could be: 1. Bad tin of pellets. Are the skirts da
  9. Nice shootin', Tex! How's the Walther shooting? What's its max range in terms of killzone-size groups? I had the CO2 version for a while -- the 850 AirMagnum -- which was surgically accurate, but you needed to check zero every time you used it due to the effect of temperature on the CO2.
  10. The photography's coming along too... bit of moody Photoshop vignetting going on there, methinks! Nice shooting.
  11. I have a sitty tree at that distance from the house, and the same height. With an average-weight pellet, I used to aim a little low. I now use heavier JSB Exact Heavies, and have to aim a little high -- presumably due to the quicker drop-off from the heavier pellet. Pick a pine tree, at roughly the same height and distance, and shoot at the pine cones -- you'll soon see what's going on.
  12. No mate, it had just flopped over behind the body. If they offered a bounty in my department for coypu, like they do in some parts of France, it'd be in a baggie in the freezer!
  13. Cheers! It's a bit tricky at this time of year, when all the undergrowth starts growing like wildfire. I had to manoeuvre around to get a clear shot, but at that range, it was hard to miss, even for me! The SAK silencer does a reasonable job, I try to keep the noise down just in case there's another coypu hanging around...
  14. Well, some people here eat 'em, roasted whole. You can also buy Pâté du Marais (marshland pâté) which is made from their meat. In Hungary, apparently they're considered a delicacy. Others use shotguns or dogs to control 'em, because they do a lot of damage, not just to the banks of waterways, but to crops like maize, and yes, they give the meat to their dogs. My concern is that they carry quite a lot of diseases, like Weil's disease, toxoplasmosis etc., so I don't eat 'em myself.
  15. Managed to grab a bit of video footage of the hunt -- see here: https://youtu.be/ZRNa8-YnkQc
  16. Haven't seen any little 'uns yet -- now is around the time when the females drop their litters. I suspect this one was a pregnant female looking for a nice, quiet spot to give birth, before teaching the nippers how to tunnel under the banks of my lake then moseying off to pastures new and leaving them to it. They're normally around 5 kilos when they're that size lengthwise, which is why I think it was a pregnant female. The biggest one I've ever seen in these parts (found it drowned in our lake) was an absolute monster at 11 kg/23.5lbs, and that was a male. You can see it here: https:/
  17. Some movement on the lake caught my eye, so I grabbed the binoculars and looked out through the kitchen window. Sure enough, a sizeable V-shaped wake was crossing the lake, led by the big, square profile of a coypu's head. Finished my lunch, then grabbed the Zastava and donned a neoprene camo top and a cap, since it looked like rain. I wandered over to the south end of the lake, and had a scout around with the 12X binoculars, but couldn't see anything. So I decided to stalk up the eastern side of the lake, where our little patch of woodland makes for a good backdrop, and the sound of the bree
  18. My neighbours shoot anything and everything with air rifles. Also very French... Just don't get caught! Cool! What's first prize?
  19. Put the kettle on... That's the first time I've ever heard that! I'm not even sure it's legal, under EU law... I'd take the ferry to Caen, and take the A84 motorway south -- it'll only add an hour and a bit to you journey. Or just buy a 16 fpe air rifle locally, and keep it there -- the missus will understand!
  20. No mate its me i think 22 iv shot 22 since i was a nipper and i think thats may be why im finding it hard to use the nv as its the scorp i use when using that but i had the mtc mamba on last night im going to fit the nv to the s410 and see how i get on with it on 22 atvbmac  If that doesn't work, there's always knitting... After years of shooting .177s, I've recently acquired a couple of .22s. Different ball game entirely, so I feel your pain...
  21. It's when the vertical crosshair isn't perfectly perpendicular to the bore axis, with the result that it makes you shoot like a cant.
  22. He's full of cack. I've shot a full-power CO2 rifle standing, sitting, supported, unsupported, off sticks, off a bipod. No change in POI whatsoever. If he tried shooting from a bipod and found that the POI had shifted, he was most probably using a different cheek weld/eye alignment.
  23. That's a really nice-looking stool. The rifle looks pretty smart, too!
  24. I've broken a couple of Hawke AirMax scopes and a Nikko Stirling AirKing on FAC springers. Apparently, the Hawke one-inch scopes use a leaf spring to hold the erector tube in place, which is less robust than the mechanism in their 30mm scopes. So, even though they're "rated for all calibres", they're not. The Targetmaster might use the same construction. If it's under guarantee, they should replace it. If not, it's time for a new scope. If you're on a budget, the Hawke Sport HD is a solid, bright scope that has survived my FAC springers -- so far!
