  1. Mine's a FAC rifle and it was a FAC kit, so I wasn't too worried, but in the UK it pays to check. It took about 200 pellets for mine to bed in, although it was very consistent immediately, with a velocity spread under 10 fps using JSB Exact Heavies. V-Mach kits really are worth the money.
  2. I think it's great that you're giving a helping hand to your local raptor population.
  3. Short answer, yes and yes (to DIY). After fitting the V-Mach, the rifle's lock time (the firing cycle from squeezing the trigger to the pellet leaving the barrel) is incredibly quick. This means that there's less time for the pellet to be moved off course by any rifle movement while it's still in the barrel. All twang disappeared, there's just a metallic "tink" as I fire. Recoil disappeared almost completely. Fit a Rowan Engineering Extra Setback trigger at the same time, and you'll have a vermin-killing machine if you're a bunny basher, or a tack-driver if you're a target tart. Mine
  4. So long as you don't cause delay or distress to footpath users, you are within the law as far as I understand it.
  5. I think the law states that you should not discharge a firearm within 50 feet of a public right of way if it will cause delay or distress or diarrhoea to users of that right of way, or summat like that. So err on the side of caution, as stated before. Many shooters inform the police in advance that they will be shooting on a specific permission, and get a log number in return. If you're concerned, you can always do that, then politely tell any gobshîte who objects to you carrying a rifle to call the police and query the log number.
  6. Shame I'm so far away. I've got a folding bike in the barn, never use it, and would happily donate it. If he gets a folding bike, he could take it on the train with him and use it for the walk to work at the other end as well.
  7. Nice shooting! Not bad going for a springer that costs 2/6!
  8. Cheers. Haven't seen a coypu on the lake for a couple of weeks, so the next one should be along anytime soon!
  9. That's a ridiculous price! What kind of groups are you getting, and at what range?
  10. I've even seen journos do it on video too -- but I don't think they've had a visit from Plod yet... Meanwhile... http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/342946-little-owl-decoy-corvid-control/
  11. Have you tried hypnotherapy? That or CBT can work wonders in the right circumstances...
  12. Need a bit more info than that! Calibre? Ammo? Range? Scope?
  13. Aye, like Villaman said. Practise first until you're sure of guaranteeing a clean kill -- the kill zone on most of your quarry is one inch or less. Practise with different stances -- you'll be sometimes be caught in the open when quarry pops up, and have to freeze and take a standing shot, for example. Also practise shooting at steep up and down angles (think squirrels/pigeons in trees). Aim at a few pine cones up in a tree and you'll soon see how the pellet rises at different angles. For rats, baiting works well, with something nice and sticky like peanut butter or chocolate spread, w
  14. Cheers. They don't smell of much apart from lake water and mud... until they've been dead for a day or two, of course!
  15. So, there I was, walking the perimeter fence of our property with a loaded .22LR under my arm, as you do. I was on the lookout for a fox that a neighbour had spotted mooching around in the cow-field behind our chicken sheds two evenings ago. I watched it myself last night -- a mangey old fox, limping from a damaged front left leg. It crossed the cow-field diagonally, and disappeared into the undergrowth by the stream at the bottom of the field, right next to our fence line, where our ducks tend to hang out. That's where the stream comes into the lake, and the fence is pretty low there due to
  16. Aye, it does what it says on the tin! Not the most powerful shooter in the world, but at close range, it does the business. I've seen magpies grabbing and killng fledgling blackbirds the last two years, and last year they even started stealing hens' eggs from out of the chicken shed, so I decided it's time for some population control -- I now shoot 'em on sight, if I'm in reach of a weapon.
  17. I acquired a Crosman 2240 CO2 pistol last year, in .22. Then I pimped it for use as a ratting/short-range vermin gun, in response to a rat problem in the chicken shed, adding a stock, silencer adapter, silencer and a Hawke Sport Dot sight. So far, the only thing it's shot is a trapped rat in a cage, since Ratty was kind enough to sign his own death warrant a few days ago. Now though, we have a bird feeder that sits on the lawn, about four yards in front of the kitchen windows, and about eight yards from our utility room window. I zeroed the pistol at eight yards the other day, a
  18. FAC V-Mach HW97K, Rowan extra setback trigger. Puts out 13-14 fpe depending on the pellet. Laser-accurate with JSB Exact Heavies out to 45 yards. My go-to rifle if there's a magpie sitting at the top of a tree at long range, thinking it's safe... I've taken out coypus with it up to 35 yards, and they have a much thicker skull than a fox. Nuff said?
  19. I've tried Winchester Long Z through my 22-inch Zastava barrel. 765 fps and 37.75 fpe. They printed a 3" group at 65 yards, and one-inch groups at 33 yards, with a POI drop of around two inches @ 33 yards compared to Winchester Super X subs. Haven't tried Shorts through it yet, although I have some in store. The problem with shorts apparently is the larger gap between the round and the start of the rifling, which can affect accuracy. Mind you, the Long Zs through a SAK silencer were totally silent -- all I could hear was the click of the firing pin.
  20. Let me guess... with the 97, not with a PCP...?
