I once shot a coypu that I'd trapped through the top of the head at what's mistakenly called point-blank range, i.e. from a few inches away. The pellet went straight through after transiting the brain. Ten minutes later, after I'd poured it out of the trap and come back with a sack to dispose of the corpse, the body was still heaving, as though the animal was trying to roll over. No respiration, no blink reflex, it was as dead as a door-nail, but still moving around. I've heard say that cows' ears twitch for ages after they've been removed in the abattoir... Haven't tried that with a coypu

Nice shooting, and a great write-up!

It's called residual synaptic capacitance, and does infrequently result in such an extreme reaction. Twitches and kicks are quite common, as you know, as the residual electrical charge in the nervous system bleeds off. That plus adrenaline -- rabbits and other quarry are normally on a hair-trigger, always on the point of flight from a threat -- can result in the effect you saw. Adrenaline can keep the heart pumping, resulting in gouts of blood from severed arteries. The autonomic nervous system can keep the chest heaving, trying to force air into lungs to send oxygen to the legs and carry

I notice he doesn't do any accuracy testing with 'em... I wonder why?

Nice shootin', Tex!

Never seen a .25 cal air rifle in France... even .22s are rarely seen in gunshops... and I've only found one online retailer that sells Weihrauchs here, which is why I order mine from Belgium or the Netherlands!

Cheers! It's actually a Zastava 22LR, which (confusingly) they designate the CZ99 Precision. Made in Serbia, where they know a thing or two about guns, apparently... It has a 22" cold hammer forged barrel, and can print 20mm groups with the right subsonic ammo at its 65 yard zero, now that I've floated the barrel. It's my go-to gun because it's so darn reliable, especially if there's a breeze that would make a shot with an air rifle too unpredictable. Interestingly, I couldn't find either an entrance or exit hole on the magpie, no blood either, just three or four small black feat

Spotted this bandit through the kitchen window, hanging around our chicken shed. I've watched them go in there before to steal hen's eggs, bring them outside the shed, break them, take a couple of mouthfuls and fly off... while teaching their young 'uns how to do it. Not this time... I trotted into our utility room/mudroom and grabbed the 22LR, due to the swirling, blustery breeze which would have pushed a pellet off course. Took the shot from the small mudroom window, estimating it at around 52-55 yards (lasered afterwards at 48 yards). Gave it one mildot of holdunder, since the rifle is ze

I've owned a Gamo Shadow 640 (first air rifle) and a FAC Hunter 440 DX. Both truly horrible rifles, avoid Gamo like the plague.

Nice summary. You obviously prefer a standard two-zero set-up. Have you ever tried a single-zero set-up, to avoid the need for holdunder at intermediate ranges?

Never had a problem with Aguila Super Extras, Lapua/Akah X-Targets or X-Zones, or Win Subs. Had that problem with Remington subs, which were all over the place -- completely unreliable ammo. Shan't be buying those ever again!

The best pellet will be whichever pellet your barrel prefers. Get a JSB Test tin, which contains different head sizes, and that should point you in the right direction. Just remember to season the barrel with 10-20 shots with a new pellet before shooting for groups to determine its accuracy potential.

Exactly. I use a .177 on magpies from about 20 yards out to 45 yards. Closer than that, I use .22, because I find that the .177 pellet tends to zip straight through the chest at close range, whereas the .22 drops 'em. That's with FAC springers, at any rate -- 13 fpe in .177, 16 fpe in .22

HW85, same action as the 95 but with good open sights, and cheaper. Lighter than the 97 too.

New Little Springer
Coypu Hunter replied to Sparky_89's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Clean the barrel before first use, it'll be full of factory grease to prevent rust -- if you don't, you'll get dieselling (loud bang plus smoke) which can damage the rifle. Squirt Ballistol (or similar) down the barrel from the breech until it drips out of the muzzle. Leave it to work for a few minutes. Then pull some patches through from breech to muzzle. You can buy kits for this, but being a cheap barsteward, I use a length of plastic strimmer wire, crimped in the middle. Push the pull-through in from the muzzle, place a 2cm-square patch of cut-up T-shirt in the crimp, spray with Ballis -
I normally wait until there's another couple of rabbits directly behind the first one, then shoot 'em all at the same time -- bullets are quite expensive, you know!

You should use these, they leave a smaller hole...

Does The Air You Carge Your Pcp With Make A Difference?

Sounds like they banged it against something. I'd check the scope mount screws, stock screws, silencer alignment... -

I've broken Hawke AirMax and NS AirKing scopes on FAC springers, even though they're "rated for all calibres." If it's the odd flyer, then it's the pellets or the shooter. If the zero changes completely, without the rifle being knocked and with all mount and stock screws still tight, then it's more likely the scope. Check your stock screws first to see if they've worked loose. If they're tight, it's probably the scope. Hawke told me that their one-inch tube construction uses a leaf spring to hold the erector tube in place, and this is more fragile than the system used in their 30mm sc

Aren't they putting up the licence fees too? Sounds like money for old rope to me!
