Until you have been in a combat situation you can’t really say . The fog of battle the rush of adrenaline, the wrong decision. I say that whatever the real truth of the matter is , leave it be . The man was a hero , he got the VC . His family is proud of his actions. I can tell you one thing , there was a lot of bad feeling during and after the falklands . The fact that the Welsh guards got selected after just completing household duties at Windsor the Tower and Buck house ..... they weren’t ready for combat . But there were forces at work at the top end of command that wanted

Another regiment that was very busy during the Falklands were the Gurkhas . Those guys spread terror through the Argentine ranks . I don’t think it’s right to talk on an open forum about the tactics they employed but it involved their Kukri’s . A very impressive outfit .

The Scott’s guards fixed bayonets and charged Mt Tumbledown in the Faulklands conflict in 1982 , they had the pipes playing as they took on the Argentine marines that were dug in . It must have put the fear of god in them . I’ve heard first hand accounts of the battle. It was brutal and bloody and hard to believe it’s nearly 40 years ago . The pipes serve a duel purpose, they stir national pride in the Scottish troops and scare the enemy.

The great strength that the British army has always had is “ discipline “ . Think Crecy , Agincort , Waterloo , the countless skirmishes with the American independence army . It was our discipline that won us victory after victory against the “ cheese eating surrender monkeys “, and saw this once great nation of ours rule over a vast Empire. The officers have had to inspire their soldiers to follow them and keep rank instead of heading for the hills . They did this by the threat of brutal corporal punishment , but they also cleverly developed “esprit de corps “ pride in your regiment which the

I was a member of the Household division back in the early 80’s . I can confirm that it still draws its officers from the nobility. If you haven’t been to Eton or a similar school you won’t get in . But don’t be fooled into thinking that they are soft chinless wonders . They went through “brigade squad” which was about 8 weeks of hell , designed to weed out the unsuitable candidates before they did their officer training proper . The officers that I knew were “badass” , posh but “badass” , they were leaders , they didn’t think or behave like the ranks , they were a very different breed . But I

A friend of mine is chairman of the governors at his kids school for exactly that reason ...... and he gets grief off other parents for crap like you mentioned. But like he says to them , I’m one person and I’ve only got one vote . But the change has to start somewhere Si . Get yourself on the board of governors and do something about it . The left used to be the opposition, trying to get society to change to their crackpot ideals , they realised that they need to brainwash the kids . Now right minded folk are on the outside of these institutions, looking in , wondering what the hell is going

Well , after my usual break from the shoot I am like the title to this thread “ back up at the shoot” now and back on the shoot payroll. I spent my first day back topping up hoppers and spraying some roundup around the pens.I also had a check for cubs in a few places , but nothing yet . I’ve had a cub in a Larson trap the other day so it was obviously hunting for itself, so it’s gloves off time and no quarter will now be given to Charlie. Here are a couple of pictures of wild garlic and bluebells you might like .

Sausage dog is missed. I sincerely hope he makes a reappearance when he is ready . His knowledge of weird and wonderful firearms and posts were always interesting. Not to mention the pyjamas.?

The police are in a position where they try to limit the amount of ammunition and guns you hold because the fear them getting into the wrong hands or the certificate holder going “Raoul Moat”. In reality weather you have 200 rounds or 2000 , you are likely to have been dealt with by an armed response unit after 20 -50 shots ? But there argument is it’s them that have to deal with the situation, not you . You can’t argue really.
-
You could , but if for some reason ( unlikely I know) the police got a search warrant for my house and found more than the 500 on my ticket I wouldn’t have a ticket. Gamekeepers do have their property’s searched now and then , particularly if there is a poisoned raptor found or firearms indiscretions. You can’t be too careful. I haven’t been searched but someone I know did , and they go through everything!!!!

I got a mate who is a gunsmith/ rfd to order them from Edgar bros for me , as I couldn’t get hold of them , you can’t just get them from Edgar bros unless you have an account and none of my local gun shops stock them . The minimum he could order was 1000 , so I’ve paid him for them , but as I’ve only got room for 500 on my ticket he is looking after the other 500 . It’s a complete “arse and cake party “. But that’s the hoops I’ve had to jump through to get Norma subs .

I’m not sure . All I know is I sent my certificate in for a variation recently and I asked to be able to have 1000 22lr and was refused, 500 is the maximum I’m allowed. I will try again next time . It’s just a pain now because my mate has to keep them until I’ve finished the first 500 .
-
My “ticket “ is how we refer to our firearms certificate and the conditions that are placed upon us . We all have an amount of ammunition that we allowed to buy / store . In my case I’m allowed to have 500 22lr . If I am found with more than this I’m in breach of my allowance and would potentially lose my firearm certificate. Each calibre of rifle I have has a different quantity of rounds I can buy / have in my possession.

I bet he’s got another pair of boots like that at home .
-
I should have written £76 for a 1000 Norma subs . I’ve only got 500 on my ticket . So my RFD pal is storing the other 500 until I’ve got room for them .

Welcome to our world, the British are being shafted financially in just about every aspect of our lives . Think yourself lucky you don’t have to pay our petrol prices .

Yes , it’s remarkable really, because most are buried in back yards in the US . ?

Thermal scope, anyone tried one?
shovel leaner replied to Tyla's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The guy I’m talking about was a bloody nightmare. The stories I’ve heard you wouldn’t believe. He not only shot a sheep but when he took the shot a courting couple immediately stood up . They had been lying in a fold in the ground between the unfortunate sheep and the idiot shooter . He also used to drive his Subaru pickup with his “mutton gun “ propped in the footwell of the passenger seat, loaded , the mutton gun went off once ..... so what did he do ? Fitted an ariel in the roof through it . I could go on but I don’t want to bore you , you get the picture. Fox dropper knows him and could p -

Thermal can’t be blamed for stupid shooting and wrong identification . It’s been happening for years on the lamp . A guy I know of who ( I won’t call him a keeper) used to run a shoot , regularly shot at eyes and killed quite a few sheep , which were then thrown into the river . We used to call his rifle “ the mutton gun”. -

A mate of mine has the Xq50 on his .223 and he loves it I’ve been out with it and was hoping for a shot at a fox , but it didn’t happen. But I saw hares and deer and the quality of picture was superb. I really liked the little square picture that shows the target at increased magnification alongside the main scope image , that was really useful I thought . I think that they are the way to go if your pockets are deep enough.
