I was just on my way around the shoot to check my Larson traps . They have slowed up a bit to be honest. I’ve been catching well this year and a magpie is almost a rare sight now ...... just how I like it . Just tootling along , not a care in the world , then I spot Charlie, I think I must of disturbed his afternoon nap as he got up out of his curled up position and made for some bushes , he stopped as they often due and gave me a broadside target. I only had my 22lr with me and I cursed my laziness for not bringing out the .243 . But I’m confident with my little Tikka and it was only about 70

Went to check out this plantation that was planted 30 years ago I’d guess, I remember the old keeper planting it and it was before my youngest daughter was born and she is 26 now . Last year the harvester went in to thin it out and as they usually do they made a mess with all the branches scattered everywhere making walking difficult. I have been looking for runs for my snares , but all my old favourites have been ruined. One thing to come of the thinning is that sunlight is now able to reach the ground and Mother Nature has carpeted the plantation in a sea of cow parsley and forget me nots .

I’ve asked the same question, we heard that he is fine , but just having a break for his own reasons . I don’t think he was pissed off with anything, just having a break . I’ve done the same . It’s a bit weird, because the longer you leave it the more people wonder what’s wrong and there is probably nothing wrong . You just get out of the habit . Then when you come back on you don’t want a fuss , “ glad you are back “stuff .

Just being devils advocate here . People grow up , and people change as they get older and think of consequences. For my part I got into some violent scrapes when I was younger. This is before CCTV in town centres . So I never got a police record. When I got my shotgun certificate I fell in love with shooting. I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardise my shooting. “Have one more pint for the road “? No chance . Any form of physical confrontations , have to be , you are backed in a corner with no other option . I honestly believe that my shooting made me responsible , and behave myself

I have had both jabs , but I had Pfizer, nothing more than an arm ache. I can understand not wanting to go through all that itching crap though , sounds grim . I don’t think I’d have been up for a second dose , but the doc did say that it was unlikely to cause a bad reaction the second time .

Well in spite of the full moon at least it wasn’t raining last night so I decided to venture out and have a look around the shoot . I’ve been spending my time repairing pens and repairing damaged feeders and drinkers , but also looking for Cubs , I’ve looked in all the usual places but can see no sign of any , but I know there must be some as I caught a smallish cub in a Larsen . It’s still very wet so I didn’t want to drive over the fields too much so I opted to park up in the shade of an oak tree and let the caller work it’s magic . I don’t seem to have as many squirrels about this year . The ongoing trapping and shooting seems to be having an effect. This time last year it seemed as if everywhere I looked a squirrel was running about. I’m still seeing the odd one but not in the same numbers . I’ve been out with some of the beaters and shot dreys too . Ive not done anything different to any other year really , it seems to go like this , high population density, next thing not so many . We have ancient Beach woodland here which is being damaged by squirrels and so we get some money by way of a grant to control them . I no
