when i first start with a pup its important to find something the pup likes to hold, socks are indeed attractive to a lot of pups, or a small stuffed toy especially if it has been used by the kids so it gets a bit of scent on it. but as they progress its a good idea to get them carrying all sorts of things, a dog has other uses than just carrying game. over the years i have had 2 lost gloves and a lost set of keys found and retrieved by my dogs. nowadays i get them carrying wallets, spectacles, key fobs all kinds of stuff

yeah, good powerful head on her. lovely pup that, cant beat getting them out and about as much as possible as early as possible

that dog looks fine for a saluki cross of that age. keep your money in your pocket, if the diet is correct then the body makes its own creatine. creatine doesnt actually help build muscle but is involved in supplying energy to muscles for work

Keeping A Dog A Week Before Jabs???
beast replied to Big bald beautiful's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
when i rang to book my last pup in i was told to wait as the new pup would be under stress for a week or so and the added strain on its system of having an injection might make it a bit sick. i could see where they were coming from but didnt agree and went to naother vet. -
for many years now i've just had two at a time, normally get a pup in when the other reaches 4 or 5 when i was younger i sometimes had as many as 5 but to be honest none of them got the one on one they deserved either training or work wise

food is indeed an important factor in this, as you can at least get her to feel comfortable coming into your space, but as soon as she is not hungry the desire to be near you isnt as strong. she needs to learn that her natural need to bond with another "pack member" can be fulfilled through you (i hate that expression, but at least you can understand what i mean!). never force yourself upon her, she must choose to come to you. put yourself in non-threatening positions like just lying on the flor and ignoring her, dont even look at her, and get a bit of fur or something else appealing and just

Slip Lead Or Anti-Pull Harness?
beast replied to shootinforfood's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
keep the noose high up on the dogs neck, just behind the ears, and keep a couple of inches of slack in your hand. any effort to pull, and release the slack and immediately snap your hand sideways away from the dog, so you are not jerking against the windpipe but instead snapping against the outside of the neck. the aim is to throw the dogs head out of its intended direction, not to hurt the dog. you can even do sudden right-angle turns away from the dog to keep its attention on you, but dont do this when the lead is taut as you are simply towing the dog and it is learning nothing. good luck -
shes in good nick, and looks to have cracking feet

i'm no expert in this field but two things i have been told are 1. make sure they get plenty of calcium and vitamin D as they are necessary for bone formation and not too much phosphorous as this will prevent proper bone density 2. not too much protein as it will contribute to over large muscles in a young dog (in conjunction with too much hard exercise) and this can in turn cause skeletal problems some folks may disagree with this and as i say i'm no expert but just information i have been given over the years

Slip Lead Or Anti-Pull Harness?
beast replied to shootinforfood's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
slip leads are a great tool for teaching a dog to walk nicely beside you, but they are not a magic wand and in themselves will do nothing. get a slip lead on the dog and teach it to walk sensibly on it. there is loads of info on the net and elsewhere about this but its really not too hard just lots of repetition and a good technique. -
Too right,.. I saw his Salukis doing some incredable feats of agility ,...it was amazing.... Still got a bunch of photos showing them in action,...fecking awsome.... scan them and get them on here....please??!

Extent of the damage will never be known.... but her leg works .... just theres no muscle in the shoulder to give it strength.... Anyhow..... she had a run at a rabbit on that walk..... shame we didnt get it on camera.... And another run today.....shes no chance of catching it.... unless she stands on it by mistake ... But a proud moment.... if it is just muscle wastage due to the leg being immobile then it will eventually come back. if the main nerve serving the shoulder is damaged it should show signs of mending by now if it is going to (cant remember the name of the pa

i got my self in trouble as a young man for running game where i shouldnt have been on more than one occasion, these days with a young daughter i cant afford to play that game any moore so i stick to rabbits and rats on permission the conservative party promised a free vote on lifting the ban in this parliament, but for once i hope they dont as they will lose. they were thinking that if they were in government they wouldnt be in coalition with those liberal kill joys. there will only be one opportunity to have the ban overturned so i hope to god the tories dont hold a vote, and win the nex

john holmes was certainly one of our most talented and under rated dog trainers. even now i thumb through his book "choice and training of the family dog" each time i get a new pup. he used to use salukis for public exhibitions of training for god's sake, who could possibly question that he was one of our greatest!!

First Cross Collie Greyhound Pup
beast replied to Big bald beautiful's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
seen the pictures of that pup and its one which really stood out for me. best of luck with it, keep us posted how she is doing -
a lot of farm collies will go off hunting when "off duty", years ago they were virtually expected to feed themselves from what they could kill or scavenge on poorer farms. my old Mum had a border on the smallholding that i used to take ferreting nd ratting with the lurchers, still worked the stock. never took her others out myself, but they would all kill vermin round the place
-
yep, one of my mates used to say that cur dogs werent bred they were riveted together! i think there are two reasons that people go for collie crosses time and again, one is obviously the nature of the work they are expected to do (terrain, quarry etc0 the other is the temperament of the owner, some of us just like that almost telepathic bond you can form with a collie type, just a look enough to get the correct response from them. no shouting, no slip leads, just an age-old symbiotic partnership

One Girl And Her Collie X.......!!!!!!!!
beast replied to BORDERSCOT's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
brilliant pictures. its the right way to raise kids without a doubt. i have a two year old (yes at my age, i know the comments will start about being a dirty old man!!!) and we spend as much time as we can outside. out with the dogs picking blackberries today, came home with purple hands, face, mouth, clothes but spent the whole time laughing together. magic memories. -
this is a real bad do, and i hope the dog gets returned. big question though, what do we do in the long run? at the moment we keep our own dogs as secure as we practically can, and send out the search parties if a dog goes missing, but i dint know how we go any further? i'm not up to it physically these days as i was in my 20s/30s even my 40s but i would stand up and be counted if i found a bloke sniffing round my yard, but 2 or 3 of the feckers? reckon most of us would be outgunned there! lessen some of these thieves get a damned good shoeing though i cant see it changing. if they know th
