  2. yeah, glad its home. and as the man says, what were the circumstances? it may help other people who get their dogs stole to know how you got this one back
  3. should have given him a right hook seriously, where does this shit end?!! have his gran up for sale next week
  4. nice one. whats the breeding of the dog?
  5. seem to remember a few years ago a deerhound x beardie that was supposed to be handy (think it was called lucky?) think it sired some useful dogs too
  6. i thought lucas was out of brian plummers stuff?
  7. the important thing is to clean any wound as soon as possible, washing with clean water is as good as anything to really irrigate the wound because its not just bacteria which cause abscesses, any foreign matter can do so. run cold water into the wound for as long as you think you might need. i know people who will keep washing until the bleeding stops but i think this is unecessary. skin tears, even quite big ones, rarely go septic. i tend to just leave them unless they are big enough to need a stitch or staple. puncture wounds i flush with diluted pevidine (iodine based) at least once a day,
  8. personally, i like the first cross better than a 3/4. a lot of 3/4s come out just too greyhoundy, but i have seen a couple which turned out like a big strong super fast first cross and they were awesome. seen very good border and beardie first crosses, but the best all-rounder i've ever seen was a border-beardie (hancocks mr jones) half cross, absolutely superb bitch. the best ferreting dog ive ever watched, would take birds anddeer with ease (up to fallow doe size) and was a tolerable hare courser, not just hunted up but with a fair slip. great nose and feet, and virtually indestructible. i
  9. its a very good book, ive had running dogs more years than i care to remember but i know that i dont know it all, and i am constantly dipping in and out of this book. well done skycat for putting it together
  10. collie grey for me, do pretty much anything i need it for, plus a good hob ferret
  11. i've had good dogs and good bitches. sometimes dogs will challenge yiou a bit when they reach adolescence but i think you should have got a good relationship long before that stage so it shouldnt be a problem. occasionally a really dominant bitch can be a handful but again simple enough to get the relationship on an even keel if you know your business. bitches can be mean with pups brought in, not always but often enough to bear it in mind (never seen a dog mean to a pup) and if you have more than one dog its a safer bet to keep a pack of males tham females, two males will have a scrap and the
  12. what is the neighbour complaining about specifically? is it just because she thinks its cruel to keep dogs outside or is there some specific issue such as noise, waste, smell or whatever?
  13. is there any desperate rush to get a pup? your other dog is your first dog so why dont you just spend the winter learning from each other and getting the work to the dog. a puppy around will distract the older dog, and the pup will also focus on the older dog instead of you if if is getting attention from it, wait till your big dog is older or you could end up with two spoiled dogs if you are still a novice yourself
  14. the most important thing to remember in regard of preventing infection is to get the wound as clean as posible as quickly as possible. clean water is as good as anything else, just flush as much as you can through the wound . its not just bacteria which causes abscesses, foreign material left in a wound will cause them even a splinter will fester if left in. i knew a fella had a horse run through some fencing had some horrendous holes in it. he brought it up to the yard, just stuck a hosepipe into all the holes, some places it was going in one hole and coming out of another. not one of those w
  15. yep, she had mammary tumours when she got to about 15. lived to 17 though.
  16. collie crosses often make very good ferreting dogs
  17. thanks folks. none of my bitches has suffered from this to any degree so i'm no expert but we had a bitch when i was a kid which after every season would take to her bed with a squeaky toy and great udders full of milk and stay that way for what seemed ages. cant remember what my folks used to do , just let it run its course as i recollect, but would this not potentially lead to mastitis?
  18. and lets be honest, if they are walking into anything they must have the police there to serve the warrant, so if there is any threat the police would be able to flag that up themselves without allowing the wankers to access the information. personally i think that the rspca have gone so far from their original good work that they are now a political/money making organisation first and an animal care organistaion second. not right.
  19. didnt want to hijack the other thread, so here's a question. if a bitch suffers from phantoms, will taking a litter off her stop them in future? or do bitches ever have phantoms after their first litter if they have never had them before?
  20. why did she let them in?
  21. might be difficult, but if i were in your position i should be looking for a different mentor......
  22. there are a few points here, i feel first, some dogs simply will never take foxes, i've even sen a couple which as they got older didnt even bother chasing them. some will only learn after being run with another dog, some will catch them until they get bit, then hold back, others will not want to get involved but end up getting bit and thats the thing which switches them on. and some are just demons to fox by nature. all different. second, whether or not a dog takes foxes makes no difference at all to whether it will be a decent rabbit dog. although all the fox dogs i've seen would als
  23. thats the sort of dog i like, they are unbreakable on some of the horrific ground i hunt. and looks very well. all the best with him
  24. im lucky because my garage opens onto the end of my garden so i took the door off and meshed in the front. built raised sleeping boxes inside, got light and power in there and the concrete floor easy to wash and dry. with the mesh ive got it would be very hard to steal the dogs (not that anyone would want mine!) couple of old sofas in there too, dogs can lay about on them, rip them up, whatever. would be easy to partition it up if i had dogs that didnt get on
  25. tiny i have kept several good sized snakes and what you have written sounds just about spot on. its heart breaking to think that your sleeping child could be killed by a snake, but even worse to think that maybe, just maybe, something more sinister is going on..... RIP kids.
