whats the strangest thing you have caught while fishing?
redpat1 replied to patdahat's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
In my teens I hooked something heavy on the bottom while tip fishing, after several minutes I managed to bring to the surface a securicor money bag! My friend and I thought we had hit the jackpot as it was stuffed full, eventually we landed it and managed to get it open only to find thousands of pieces of paper cut up to the size of notes. I dont think I ever felt so disapointed as a lad. Never worked out why it was full of blank money sized paper though!!!! Pat -
I take mine running 2-4 times a week cross country and a bit of road, usually do 5-10k depending on the conditions. If I dont run they get a similar distance walk through the woods instead. Dogs get worn out and it stops me from hanging the kids by their thumbs.lol.

im no expert on travellers but a lot of them boys do graft for there money , and as far as i can make out they have respect and pride in there own community , i think you gotta realise that they have lived there way all there lives as have we , and we like to do things differant to them , i have met a few and i can honestly say they are ok , im not saying there all like that , you get good and bad in all walks oh and im no gypsy hugger  Hi Mick I come from this sort of background on my fathers side so I understand that there are some top fellas about who are from the travelling

I know what you are saying about having a wad of cash and nice motors and all that, but there is a lot more to life than all the material things although they are nice to have I dont covet anyone else. I work a regular job with an average wage, I pay my way, live reasonably within the law and try and bring up my kids with a good sense of honesty, fairness and that if you want something bad enough you get off of your arse and go and earn it the proper way. I am not slating the gypsies as I have 1st hand experience but I would rather have a steady and secure life even if I have to graft hard i

Fished a small still water and kept seeing loads of tiny frogs around. Hooked one up and cast in, barely touched the bottom and had a low double. Collected a few more Kermits and had several decent fish throughout the day, everyone else was struggling on boillies, corn etc Pat

And 35 years of strong dog experiance Then why not share some of your knowledge and experience, I would gratefully listen to your opinions as you must have forgotten more than I ever have a chance of learning. I would love to have a tenth of what you know. I am just a regular 9-5 mortgage paying family man looking to try out new things that I am interested in why I still have the chance, you must have been green once, no hard feelings pal.

please, carefully read my previous post. Do you really only have seven posts and are commenting on me. Why not read my previous posts dating back from last year, certainly nothing to hide apart from inexperience and a bit of naievity at worst.

Yeah I know what you mean fellas. I am really interested in the intracacies of how heavy dogs were worked as once this knowledge is gone I think it will be lost for good, when I was talking about getting further involved I was talking about dog work in general and the fact that if you dont have friends in the circle it is almost impossible to gain any new experiences and skills let alone any historical knowledge of days gone by. Sorry if it comes across a bit jumbled, I am facinated by how country folk spend their time both now and in the past as I never experienced it myself growing up and on

Cheers Marshman, I keep meaning to come to one of the meetings, have I missed this months? I just seemed to be bogged down with work or other personal stuff. If you let me know when the next one is I will make a real effort to attend. By the way, I wasnt having a pop. In your situation I would probably be exactly the same, its just a bit frustrating trying to find your feet. Pat

I understand that the strains must be conservered carefully and mainly agree with the way they do it. It just makes it impossible to get any further involved with the sport if no one is willing to help bring new fellas in to the sport, by the way, I am definately not after one as I have enough on my plate at the moment. I have just found it almost impossible to meet any dog men in my area revolving around earth and running dogs. If no one new comes in and by that I mean true comitted guys, and breathes life in to these sports then what happens to the dogs in the long term anyway, surely they w

I bought the book as I am interested in all Lurchers and Terriers used for their real purpose, definately not trying to legitimise myself. Of course I know that earth dogs have different lines from non working dogs of the same breed or type, I just didnt realise or imagine that it would carry over in to the heavy dog scene and if it did are those lines still around. I read Hancocks sporting terriers recently and although hard going to get through I was surprised at just how many types of terrier have dissapeared or lost their working ability over the years. I completely understand that if the

I got a copy of Dead Game yesterday and then sat up half the night giving it the once over, hardly beleiving how amazing some of those dogs are which then got me thinking! I have known quite a few fellas who have had strong dogs, mostly Staffs, but from thinking back they only resembled the animals from the book as these dogs mostly seem more muscular in an athletic way although not all of them. I am just sitting here looking through again wonder if these strains still exist and if so where do you find this kind of quality animal? as the book seems to stop around the millenium. I dont know a

Cheers mate, I think I will order it as I have enjoyed his other books so far. Pat

I am a bit bleary eyed this morning as I got the Irish strong dogs book and sat up until the early hours looking at all the amazing pictures and the complex breeding involved, still cant believe how dogs that are related can be so different in size, colour, weight and even their features. It is a treat to find such an historical collection of photos and info in one book, definately worth every penny. Then I decided to have a flick through Thats what I call terrier work iv. Again, wonderful pictures and the writing jumps off the page as it is written by people who really know their stuff and h

The right, but the hardest decision I've ever made
redpat1 replied to MrsChamp606's topic in General Talk
Sympathies pal, I rehomed my 11 month old dh/gh X whip a few months back. She had done little wrong and was dearly loved but my wife became ill during an unexpected pregnancy and the pressure on the family was very intense. Then to cap it all the guy who owned my permission passed away so I couldnt even give her any work let alone spending the time to develop her. My wife and child are now on the mend after a dodgy few weeks and I know I made the right decision, though I still have a very heavy heart at the thought of letting her go. When things return to normality and I gain new permissions -
I am on Paternity leave, back to the grind on Monday though!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered a pair of the Hogg lite originals as I ride as well, they say that they will be fine for a bit of 2-3 season activity. If they are any good I will order a full on Hunting pair. I am just a bit worried that when they arrive they wont fit after such a wait, I have followed all their advice and gone up a half size as they are not that roomy! How have you guys found the fit? Did you go up the extra half size! Pat

Hi Guys I have just ordered a pair of Alt Berg of Yorkshire boots after reading a couple of excellent reviews on their products. I will have to wait 6-8 weeks for them to be made and dispatched to me as they have a bit of a waiting list(Must be a good sign). Have any of you lasses and lads had any experiences with their boots for example longevity, breaking in and general quality. I have added the link in so if you havent heard of them they might be of some interest. http://www.altberg.c...ltbergboots.jsp. Cheers folks Pat
