what age can a pup leave its mum
redpat1 replied to fieldsportsman's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I got my 1st lurcher pup at 6 weeks. She was a complete nightmare and never stopped trying to suckle on other dogs.....ever! I think she was taken away from her mum a couple of weeks to soon. -
Hi Chaps, Dont know anything about this cross at all but I saw this on THL and thought I would stick it up for you. They sound quite handy! http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/269546-gsd-x-lurcher-pups/ Pat

Cheers lampalurcher, I think it must be more prominent on the DH X's than other lurchers. On some of them with a smoothish head and a thick haired body it can make the head look really small in contrast to the neck and body though.

I have always liked that ruff on the side of the neck of DeerhoundX's, they dont seem as prominent on other crosses that I have noticed. Is it something that is a feature of the breed? or am I talking rubbish! (if total rubbish polite answers only)

If I remember correctly there is a Deerhound type on here with 3 legs but I cant remember who owns it? any ideas

Bill, Have you got a pick you can put up that shows all the typical Doxhope attributes you mention. I am doing my best but finding it hard to be able to notice a lot of differance between all the strains.lol. Pat

Gafer, you have had some lovely dogs, for the second time today I am blown away by a dog, your new boy is a stunner. How old is he and what has he been like so far? is he quick on the uptake or does he like to do things when he is ready? which is why I think people say DH's are a bit dumb

What i would say mate if your wanting to get one is dont be too concerned with the exact cross and the specific mix of whats in it and how much etc. Just make sure that the parents are working and doing roughly what you want them for, There seems to be a lot of litters of the dh x being bred that seem to be owned and bred by middle age women wanting to own a big hairly lurcher which will never even see a rabbit another pic I know mate, that is why I said early on in the thread about seeing no decent quality pups for sale. You are definately right about not worrying to much about the ex

very nice what HTTS is he ???? he is 24'' and 43lbs mate and the biggun is 28 1/2" and around the 73lbs The more I look at him the more I like him. If you give me your address I will be happy to come round and take him off your hands.lol.

The dogs on here are stunning, this looks and sounds like it could be an ideal mix for me Lapin
-
That is a handsome hound Bill, is it one of your current dogs?
-
Mine does OK on them for a big dog, turns well for a 28" and has a decent amount of agility. Can obviously make up ground faster than a smaller dog. Obviously compared to say a whippet his turning circle is greater but he makes up for it with his Go Go Gadget neck lol. He has I would say a decent catch rate in comparisson to most smaller lurchers. I think for a dog predominately used on rabbits you would probably be better with something crossed to a collie grey just to stack the odds more in your favour. Cheers Lapin, I think that without a doubt that when I am in the position to g

If you have a Deer/Grey X of some mix do they still get down to the bunnies ok with their height? also how agile are they at turning as I would have thought that an out cross to a whip or beddie/whip would give them a bit more agility for the smaller prey especially in smaller fields.

She is text book mate, will you ever breed from her? And if so, what would you put to her? Pat
-
Good luck with those pups mate, you are gonna have your hands full!Post up a few pics if possible

So where do you go for a decent Deerhound X? I know dave Platts had some good dogs some years back, is he still producing quality dogs? I have also heard of Doxhope but I dont know anything about them at all, Are they solid animals?
-
If its not the mixy Someone is mate

would there be much difference between a 1st cross and a 5/8 etc, as they are all sighthounds surely it cant make a massive difference. I am sure that I read somewhere that back in the day some guys used a deerhound or a deerhound cross on the Fens, so they must be fairly agile with plenty of wind in their sails no matter what the ratio of mix is if any at all? ps. lovely animal lapin2008, love the short coat with the Deerhoundy looking tight feet, stunning.
-
How old is she mate? what is she to TTS? and what does the Beddie add to the mix in your opinion? as I know deerhound crosses are pretty game.Cheers Pat
-
I thought that deerhounds were very bright and biddable much the same attributes a collie would offer or does a collie add something above the intelligence of a deerhound?
-
I am down in Kent mate and on my permission I reckon I am seeing probably 25-30% of last years numbers, I hope they recover for next year! Pat
-
I cant remember even seeing a quality litter like that for sale over the last couple of years! (in case my wife sees this) Yes love, I know we need a bigger house or an extension before I get another lurcher, just thinking about the future.lol.
-
Hi guys, I was wondering what you think is the best ratio for a Deerhound X? Or whether they benefit best from another outcross from say a whippet, BeddieX or collieX etc? Are they still a good all rounder or are there more suitable lurchers out there for a bit of everything? Cheers Pat

if you go and see a litter I think you usually know if the breeder is a blagger or not, as long as I can see some kind of evidence the parents have seen some work I would be happy to take a chance as you do with any pup. I am more interested in how the parents and pups especially have been reared, I like to see well fed pups in a good environment being cared for so they have the best chance of success if I put the time in to it. Price wise anything over a couple of hundred quid for a lurcher seems crazy, I always thought of lurcher and terrier work as a working mans sport. Strong honest litter
