Hi Mate, I know it is not exactly the same but I got a Deer/Grey X Whip pup several months ago and she was completely smooth and almost completely black except a white blaze on her chest, over the past 3 or 4 months she has also started producing clumps of wirey grey hair around some of her features. She is now coming up for 9 months and is getting a little more grey and broken everyday. Hope this helps, definately a question worth asking though as I am interested to hear what the other guys think. Thanks Pat

by the way, if anyone is in the Kent area and wouldnt mind a tag-a-long so the pup can see an older more experienced dog in action that would be great. I just think she could learn a lot from being shown how it is done so she can see what I am after. I have been told this is the best way to help her piece it all together.

I think it is coming together, I wont jump the gun just yet.

I wanted to update all of the guys who gave me some help and advice in training my Deer/Grey X Whip (My 1st Lurcher). In particular the knowledge and advice passed on from Skycat, Casso and Inan, it has been a real help. Jess is coming up for 9 months and is now statring to show some potential after a lot of issues with wrecking the house, chucking her shit around and generally doing the oppostite of what I wanted. After going back to the drawing board with a patient and more gentle approach we have really bonded and managed to come to an understanding. She is no longer destroying the house an

Nice work Gafer, I wish I had half of your skill. I am not even allowed to hold a paint brush in my house with out making a complete cock-up. £25 for a hand made collar! the guys should be ripping your hand off. Lovely Work. All the best Pat -
They get to stick their heads in the wifes lady parts and dont get a clip round the earhole for their trouble!!!LOL

You took the words right out of my mouth, a wonderful gesture though. Pat

Thanks for the PM, I will be in touch soon, I might come up to the East of England a week Sunday (minus the pup). Jess isnt bothered about crapping in front of me at all, it seems to be in the small hours that she does it and then plays with it leaving a horrible mess for me or my poor wife to deal with 1st thing. The kids are not to bad with her, if anything she is a little to rough with them and trying to join in their games, I will add the kids adore her. Pat
-
Cheers Casso, I will be off out to buy a few toys to play tug with and let her destroy.LOL Great advice, I will try and make sure the kids also only play with her in the garden Pat

Thanks Casso, it sounds like you have been a fly on the wall in my house recently. It does seem that she is very irrational and the things you listed are almost daily occurances. The one habit I really find hard to deal with is that I think when she goes to toilet at night (she lives in) she seems to be picking it up and playing with it and it ends up all over the place which is a nightmare evry morning. I have walked her last thing at night, tried feeding her earlier, given her plenty of toys, no toys and a few other thing but nothing seems to stop her. She usually empties herself before bed

I think you are on to something there Skycat with the cautious thing as while out walking our usual route someone had placed a cars hub cap against the tree, she caught site of it in her peripheral vision and with tail between legs legged it 200yds before I managed to get her attention. I know 100% sighthound are slow maturing and as much as I want her to work I have all the time in the world as she is my first lurcher and I cant miss what I havent had before. Thanks Pat
-
Thanks Skycat, the pup is a DHGH X Whip. She is a lovely little thing most of the time and I would love to turn her in to a really well rounded dog as I am besotted with her and would like her to have a long and happy life (but working). Thanks Pat
-
Thanks Skycat, I was hoping you might chip in. I will start drying out a couple of pelts today starting at the beginning again and will try and make sure its fun for her. I an not very hard with her discipline as I felt with her temprament it could push her towards nervousness. I just find her hard to figure as one minute she seems full of gusto and the next she will just sit there and lick her backside.LOL. Pat

Cheers Penda, defo dont need a dog that is gonna bury itself everytime I am out for a stroll. I will defo try and get dogs that come from the work that I want each one to do specifically. Good advice thanks, dogs look handy Pat

where abouts in notts r ya? tried PMin u but it wouldnt work, I am down in kent mate, if I was in Notts there probably wouldnt be a problem Cheers Pat

I am down in Kent and I hardly ever see any lurchers or working terriers. If I do see anything they are not normally worked or owned by people who are not in to our sports. If there is anyone local I would be interested in hearing from them, I might even take them for a beer or two as I dont even get to talk about it with my usual crowd and their I-Pads. LOL
-
Thanks, yeah I know she is still very young and I definately wont give up on her. Dymented, it is a great idea but one of the problems is I dont know anyone else with an older dog as there isnt many people (that I know of) around my area that are in to it.

I took my pup (8 months old) out last night when I was on my permission, I was shooting bunnies as although not my preferred choice I am trying to keep the population down so I dont lose my it. I thought it would also be a good way for her to be introduced to the quarry as they are usually either dead or on the way out when I shoot them. I managed to pop one off and I walked her over to it to show her it writhing around for a second before I put it out of its misery, she looked at it then at me as if to say "what did you do that for?" We then moved on to some marsh land and I let her off as we

Nice photo, Hope my grey/dh X whip will have that natural instinct and ability

Cheers Phil, wouldnt think for a minute you are a chav. I think dog trends come and go but they all must have an underlying use otherwise they wouldnt become popular in the first place, would they?
-
Thanks Antsa, Sounds like the best advice I have had so far. The worst thing is most of my old mates are not interested and think I have lost the plot, Cant really explain why I am so drawn to it all, must be the neanderthal in me. LOL
-
Thanks Newkid, Like I said I want to take my time but I think you are right a Patterdale seems the best option to dig to and a JRT for hedge bashing
-
Thanks for all the comments guys, I will take plenty of time to try and make the right choices and gain plenty of experience. I think I will try and get in to the local working terrier club and see what develops from there, That is if they will let me in as I have heard they can be really hard to get accepted in to. Thanks again Pat

You guys have given me plent of advice about getting my own terriers and a few of you have suggested trying my local working terrier club. If I did go along would they mind that I dont yet have terriers (I have lurchers) and would just like to gain some more experience and knowledge befor I jump in the deep end? Are the guys who use these clubs usually a sound lot or are they likely to be a bit cliquey? Again all sensible comments and experience would be appreciated. Pat
