My lad's teacher went nuts when he picked up a live grass snake on his school trip, and then he went off and found a clutch of mallard's eggs under a willow stump whilst the others were fishing a sterile pool with their nets. He actually told them what the creatures were they were catching, not the other way round . . . You will NEVER educate town folks unless they have been part of it themselves, which is the fundamental argument against the Hunt Ban. A greater population live in cities compared to the countryside and it is their votes that outnumbered the countryman's votes and got the B

Very interesting reading that one Ditch - and I have now read every word of the document - as well as a bit of other reading I have done on the 'non-core' immunisations (Borda/Lepto etc). It has certainly made my mind up what is right for my dogs, for now and in future. Thanks for the effort it took to get hold of the document - it was well worth it OTC

MT - You didn't mention how you caught your latest hauls of bunnies? I think that might hold the answer at this time of year. I would assume that Mother Nature might up the anti on the female side to perhaps 3:1 just to tip the scales in favour of species survival. I also have an idea that a lot of bucks might be living above ground at this time of year, whilst the does are underground or at least nursing the youngsters. I am not sure how this would account for the imbalance if they were lamped with a rifle at night for example, unless the does were further afield to get the better -
Firstly I would like to thank those of you that responded to my last 'wanted' ad. If anyone has got, or knows of, any old rabbit and vermin traps that they would sell/swap or donate to me I would be very grateful to hear from you. I am looking for gin traps, older Fenn traps, Imbra/Sawyer/Juby traps and anything old or unusual really. Let me decide whether they are what I am looking for - don't just assume that I will not be interested in that single gin hanging at the back of your shed. Many thanks OTC

Excluders for springer 6 trap.
OldTrapCollector replied to Sprucegoose's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Sprucegoose - I think I am right in saying that checking traps inside every 24 hours is a legal requirement even in Eire?? Even if it isn't then it is pretty irresponsible not to bother doing so IMO OTC -

Air Pistol Recommendations Please
OldTrapCollector replied to john b's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I might be way off the mark but I remember reading somewhere that air pistols were not legal for shooting live quarry and also had to be regulated to below 6 foot pounds muzzle velocity. How does this fit in with the 'in cage dispatch' idea? As I say there might be an obvious loophole but I am not aware of it. OTC -
I have to say I did miss the place last night whilst the rebuild was going on - I also thought it had been hacked by the fun police. I cannot see any pics posted by members now either - I can see the avatars fine though. Should I change my view or is it the same for everyone?? I daren't look at anyone's profile either now or they will know I have been nosey!! I will check out Ditch's just to see how/if it has changed - he won't mind LOL OTC

I use a Theoben Fenman with the gas ram Nik and it's great for bunny bumping especially out of the land rover window. I have had it for some time and it has paid for itself many times over. I like the shortness of it for a break barrel, and the gas ram and Theoben silencer keep it nice and quiet. OTC

Spun Polyester Net Making twine
OldTrapCollector replied to OldTrapCollector's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Having made a few nice nets now out of my delivery of spun poly from Engel I think I prefer the 20/24 (as you quite rightly said I would MC). It knits well and fast. The 20/36 is nice twine for the thick bramble patches but I think it is a bit too heavy for general work and I wonder how the nets will handle when they get soaked through . . I might make up some light fox nets with the 20/36 and see how they look. I got a pack of 6 needles from Deben too and they are just the job. Thanks for the help fellas OTC -
Oh I know that! :stinker:  :aggressive: OTC

Are you sure about that??? Seems a bit odd to me too - SxS - how do you come to that decision? Surely two wild animals in a similar situation in the wild would have an equal chance of picking up ticks? OTC

I had a whole fox eaten out I caught in a wire over a railway sleeper footbridge years ago and wondered what might have done it until now, now I know . . . OTC

MC, Because the rabbit would see the net in silhouette only it would look black against the daylight anyway I would think, and I also think I am right in saying that rabbits only see in monochrome parts of the spectrum (ie black and white) so that shouldn't make much difference I don't think. As for rabbits running in to purse nets from outside (backnetting etc) then I have not had a rabbit shy away from a net just because of its colour myself. I always prefered a natural coloured net (green, sand, bieges etc) but always insisted upon a white drawcord. These days I am willing to tr

I also caught a big wild polecat in a wire years ago and tried to keep it. I took it home in a ferret box, and during the first night it ate its way through 1" marine plywood on the roof of my ferret hutch but was still in the shed. After a period of trying to win the mexican standoff between us I let it go again. I fared better with a tiny polecat kit I found in the back of a cage trap but that too didn't tame either to be honest. I bred a litter of kits off her but they too were wild as wild can be and I ended up letting them all go too. OTC

The pics I posted are simplified line drawings of stone and slate made traps. Examples exist to this day on the Dartmoor and Brecon Beacons age old warren workings, often built into the stone boundary wall or at the centre of the X shaped guide wall in the case of the 'vermin' traps. There are also rabbit drop traps (remarkably similar to the ones we use today but made in stone) in some warren walls. I will try to find the pics I have of those A chap by the name of RG Haynes wrote a paper back in 1970 on the old fox and vermin traps on the warrens of Dartmoor and Beacons. It is an archa
