Ian, I am a frequent buyer on eBay to feed my trap collecting habit, but I am a little wary of that seller with such a massive amount of feedback (and so many negatives in the last month alone!) but it shows that the deals are out there. I am set on an EOS 400D now, I might just wait until after Xmas and see what the sales bring - there's no rush. OTC

That's a new one on me too, but it seems to look ok and make an interesting mount for the pins. Nice one! OTC

Deal She's well bred, got good lines, and is still doing 3/3 in the daytime and night time When shall I send her?? OTC
-
Mine's not against it as such she just chooses not to follow the game herself . . . and I am banned from bringing dead furry things into the house too . . . she doesn't get on too well with my Beddy Grey pup either - they just don't seem to like each other . . .?? Opposites attract as they say. She puts up with me going off rabbiting and collecting traps but is not really interested in them herself, but who can blame her really? I still wouldn't swap her for the world (maybe a big boxful of old traps, but not the world . . . ) OTC

Sorry Chalkwarren, it just makes my blood boil that's all . . . and I cannot delete the post now for some reason You know me, I am just a quiet countryman , but some things need to be said. OTC

Fellas & Ladies, I have just been passed this URL which might go some way to explaining why hunting or fieldsports items apparently disappear from eBay for no apparent reason http://www.veggieromance.com/f/57483 Bloody tree huggers!! OTC

Ditch, Just a question - did you peg it down? I have been looking at mine and it looks like the trap ought to remain in situ on capture but there is a possibility it could get dragged out of its pipe isn't there? I hope that you get one soon - you deserve it!! OTC

Ditch, I knew you'd know, but I just wanted to see what the general opinion is of a specific make/model. So far, as I had tentatively thought, the Canon EOS 400D seems to have my eye, and with a price tag of about £380 (with 18 -55 lens incl) is within my buying power. I need the sharp close up speciality shots as well as those studio shots, but at the same time need to convince the ball and chain it would be just about ideal as a family snapper Does anyone use an EOS 400D? Any drawbacks to it? Wish you had gone for something else? Thanks for your responses so far OT

Gents (& Ladies of course) I intend to buy a new camera for Xmas for a family present and have no idea which one to get. It will be used for general family snaps as well as for crisp close up detailed work for my trap research, so I guess a high megapixel range would be best, maybe 10 - 12 (?). It would need to store up to 250 shots on a card too if that makes any difference. Screen size is largely unimportant but I don't want to be squinting to see the shot once I have taken it. I should have a budget of around £400 max, and have been looking at the Canon EOS, Powershot etc a

My wife washed and tumble dried mine a fortnight ago and I left it for days to dry out properly in the vain hope that I could recover it but alas it had gone to Nokia heaven. Bless her  OTC

Prince and the harriers
OldTrapCollector replied to juckler123's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
I see that nothing happened at all apart from the bad publicity as expected. No prosecutions, no evidence. Obviously just another fictitious slur against law abiding country sportsmen. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20071106/tuk...-fa6b408_2.html OTC -
My old boss had a vixen he reared from a cub, she lived in a wooden beer barrel on a lead. I don't think she would have stayed around long if she had been let off though, and certainly cannot see how you could 'train' one. OTC

We used to have an annual 'coot shoot' to thin them out, they used to eat the feed put out for the ducks and geese. There's not much to eat on them though, just a tiny bit of breast meat on each side. Skin one and you'll see - they are not exactly meaty things. OTC

Christ! THAT F*cking Hurt!!!
OldTrapCollector replied to a topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I once put my hand into a tunnel to retrieve a 'dead' stoat in a Fenn trap only to find that it was far from deceased. It bit me throught the web of skin between my thumb and forefinger and hung on long after it was really dead. The dull throbbing pain went on for days OTC -
a go at the squirrels

Hey I like that idea, squirrel decoying . . . Who will be first to come out with the plastic shell and full body types then?? OTC -
Prince and the harriers
OldTrapCollector replied to juckler123's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Or is it just media speculation pointed at spoiling another field sport activity enjoyed by a key political figure?? Where are these harriers that have supposedly been shot?? Or is it the figment of the imagination of the RSPB 'warden' who just happened to be watching both birds at the same time through his binoculars across the borders of the estate and see them both shot down. Sounds like boll*cks to me. OTC -
Ditch, From what I can see of it it looks like a conventional splitting axe you have there my friend. Now, forgive me if I am teaching you to suck eggs, but you are trying to split corded (that is sections of) sawn timber? If so, place the log on its end on top of a bigger block, flat side to flat side and aim to hit the log along an imaginary line that runs from the centre of the log to your 6 o'clock on the target log. If the blow is well aimed, and the log is not too soggy/not knotted softwood/not too damn big, then it should half nicely. Try that and let me know how you ge

hob and hob or jill and jill what is best in a cage
OldTrapCollector replied to a topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
My first 2 ferrets when I was a youngster were a pair of hobs, one white and one polecat, Snowy and Baloo. They lived together for 12 years and the white one lived on another 2 years after that. Apart from some rough squabbles in the summertime and a few sore necks from being dragged about they were fine. They must have been content otherwise they wouldn't have lived so long I suppose. That said, I wouldn't put 2 strange hobs together - that is inviting problems. Jills live better together IMO and I would recommend a pair of those above a pair of hobs. OTC -

Shoot the cage and captive with a shotgun?? That sounds like a quick way wreck your trap if ever I heard one. OTC -
local names for wildlife birds etc
OldTrapCollector replied to byron's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Most of my own diction of colloquial words are Romany derived ones as are a lot of the above as already pointed out - a few others I remember from my youth are ~ Moudie - Mole Spog - Sparrow Moggie - Moorhen I wonder how far back the 'traditional names' of Reynard, Puss, Brock, Coney, Leviathan etc go? I would imagine Olde Englishe but the origins are more sketchy. All very interesting I have to admit. OTC
