Oh! I was always taught to do it the other way, horses for courses I suppose OTC

By my own reckoning then M C is right in saying that it is 2 1/4" mesh - nets are measured knot to knot, not the full diamond. If I am wrong, then so are generations of net makers, particularly from the families of Dorset, and those boys knew a thing or two about net making . . . As for a supplier of spun poly - try Engel in Germany. 20/18 would be my choice for a long net personally But then, what do I know?? OTC

Well I couldn't ignore sucha bountiful harvest could I??? OTC

You will no doubt be aware that Fred J Taylor has brought out a new book, now widely available in paperback but Paul Morgan at Coch-Y-Bonddhu books have got a number of signed limited first editions available. Check out the eBay listing with Buy It Now option. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWA:VRI Get it while you can - it'll be an investment, not to mention a worthwhile read if his other books are anything to go by OTC

What and an address and directions to the covert, how many birds put to wood, security etc Dream on . . . OTC -
I took my lad out this morning and was amazed to see how many sloes there were and how big they were. We managed to pick 18 1/2 lb of sloes in just an hour and a half. There were still plenty left and I saw a couple of ladies heading towards the prickly corner with their buckets as we left. They are washed, bagged up and in the freezer already, waiting for me to fetch the gin from the supermarket. OTC

Goodnight 'Little Policeman' ~ nice to have made your acquaintance Chin up Ditch OTC

That's the way I start my long nets too, but I have tried to explain it before and it is not easy to understand ~ a demonstration speaks volumes! Beginners tend to start on a ring and then cut them off later but that's no bad thing as it still works the same, but for neatness and perfection then this way is the way. OTC

Yes, I remember him too OTC

I don't really think that rare is the correct word but suffice to say that they are not common traps to find. They are in escence simply a small pole trap and they are not difficult to come across really compared to some of the old traps. That one was in pretty good condition, but the price was hiked up by a few overindulgent Australian collectors who possibly had not seen one before ~ they are welcome to it at that price, too!! OTC

sad I know - I cannot help it . . . OTC

I just dream about finding more old traps for my museum collection, same as always really . . . OTC

They don't usually sell for that much Mike, but when two idiots with more money than sense decide that they want something then sky's the limit, I suppose. It has happened on a few occasions before. Let them fight over it, I say, I am sure the seller is greatful, especially as she didn't even know what it was until I told her!! OTC

Those nights that blow your house roof tiles off, with a light rain mixed in are the best IMO. There's usually a couple of nights like that in early October while this years rabbits are still green and unlamped which are extra-productive. High populations over stubble or longer grass also will add to your success rate, they sure can shift across short cropped turf on a golf course!! Forget nights with little wind, especially with a heavy dew or long hard rain - the rabbits don't like getting their bellies wet if they can help it. Dark is good but as said above, if there's a little

Why else would he be trying to stabilise the border country of Afghanistan? Surely not to use as a steppingstone to launch a land and sea offensive?? If he does I sure hope that our lap-dog government doesn't get dragged in to help - if you though that Iraq was an ugly war then it will pale into insignificance with the sheer enormity of this task. These people have fought wars, dirty wars, for generations. They are battle hardened warriors. The western civilisation does not frighten them. I for one would not even like to contemplate what would happen if this plan goes ahead.

That's the one Strong Stuff, beautiful animal. We should all have worn hats with our login names on and then life would have been easier, eh?? As I said, I met up with a few old friends but could not be sure who I was talking to at times about running dogs so I kept my thoughts and opinions close to my chest I hope you have a good day there today guys and girls OTC

Good shooting, especially that second group, which shows the rifle is holding tight patterns and the bore is good. OTC

Well, I went but I have to say that was not overly impressed . . . I picked up a few old traps and chatted to a few old (and new) acquaintances , and more than a few questions on the breeding of my lurcher pup but apart from that it seemed a bit lacking. The terrier/lurcher 'area' seemed nothing more than a rag coursing bit and was well out of the way, and apart from the IFWS, I saw little or no representation for the ferreters. It seemed like a good shopping place to bargain pennies off a RealTree jacket or Hunter wellies but not so much for the 'working man'. One other worry

That's a damn shame about your timing - I did the journey last Saturday Ferry was £130-ish for the fast one from Holyhead to Dublin, crossing only took 2 hours each way. OTC

Yes I know we're sad OTC

It just looks so clinical and new and not in keeping with my collection Ditch, I am sure as a trap to use it would be fine, but in a collection of ancient antiques then it just doesn't go. A bit like a row of Model T Fords with a Ford Fiesta parked in the middle. OTC

You'll have to wait until the weekend to see mine Ditch - I haven't got my camera until then. MT's looks like mine though OTC

I just got a spring clap trap today for my own trap collection but it was not the old type I was hoping for, it was a modern powder coated copy I'd be interested to see what yours looks like MT, PM me if you want with a pic and a price OTC

Wilf, You can put the waypoints in for your walk (or start point) and 'Sat Nav' your way back to your car if you like but it's a bit like being a wire guided missile rather than taking a leisurely walk. If the batteries fail then you are pretty stuck too, aren't you?? OTC

Wilf, I use (or should I say carry) one every day of my life on the hills. They are a great backup when the cloud drops suddenly or fog rolls in and you have left the beaten track. To my mind you cannot beat a map and compass but the technology gives you a great peace of mind ~ but don't forget to carry that map or knowing exactly where you are on the planet to within 6 feet is not much use if you don't know where the Grid actually refers to!!! I have rescued two parties of walkers from the hills in the last 2 years, both had a functioning GPS but neither had a map or compass . . . it begg
