  1. What about ex-keepers? For those of us no longer employed in the trade? OTC
  2. That looks to me like an amateurish attempt at a two-piece trap tunnel OTC
  3. I would take a quick trip back in time to the early part of the last century to visit the old trap makers of the Midlands to bring back with me a catalogue of each maker and to find the answers I so desperately need to find to finish my book on the types and history of old traps . . . I don't ask for much do I? OTC
  4. British Forces Issue Pro-Boots have been recently re-modelled and look more like the Lowa style boot now. There might still be a few pairs of the 'old style' left at the surplus stores but neither type have got steel toe caps . . . OTC
  5. To be honest that doesn't overly bother me because I shan't be using them, they will be for my collection only. If I was using them then only true genuine Fenn (or at a push, Springer) would do for me. I was just interested what they actually did have stamped on them (or any other similar trap that you might come across), that was all . . . OTC
  6. Does anyone out there happen to know how to switch a Magellan 315 GPS from Latitude/Longitude to British National Grid for 6/8/10 figure grid references please? I cannot seem to find the option on the menu , or maybe it requires uploaded information from the www. If so, does anyone know how to do it or where to find the info? OTC
  7. RH, What is stamped on the plate and brass tongue of these 'Fenn' traps? OTC
  8. Strangely enough I have tickets to see them on 16 Apr (I think), glad you thought they were still ok. OTC
  9. When I was a schoolboy one lad really did me wrong and caused a whole load of grief for me (long story) but suffice to say that I was sufficiently wound up to go to his house after dark and break every window in it with my catapult and a pocket full of stones. I slept better that night but I doubt that he did. OTC
  10. IMO pheasants are best without hanging, and to be honest I gave up with plucking them a long time ago as it is rare to get a well plucked bird without tearing the delicate skin. I simply skin them these days as it takes seconds, no feathers to clear up, and the end product is just as cookable. I now crown the breast and bone off a woodpigeon to save time, but I still pluck wildfowl and partridges. I used to know an old boy who would ask me for the odd hare every now and again for his pot - he would hang it by the head until it parted company from the rest, that way he knew it was ready
  11. They are ok in short lengths but they are hard to handle when you have many lengths on, they are designed to flex a bit so aren't really that much good for drey poking. 1 1/8 oz of No.4 shot into the drey usually has the desired effect  OTC
  12. BUMP Can anyone else help me out with any old traps? Anything considered, including old price lists and catalogues featuring traps OTC
  13. Using approved spring traps (including body-grippers) in the open is illegal in the UK. Ministry approval for them is as follows - The trap shall be used only for the purpose of killing or taking grey squirrels, mink, rabbits, stoats, weasels, rats, mice and other small ground vermin (except for those species listed in Schedules 5 and 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) and set in a natural or artificial tunnel which is, in either case, suitable for the purpose. OTC
  14. I once ferreted a 'Pet's Corner' at a local safari park with a few lads years ago and we bolted some oddities from there including a huge one which had me worried when I jumped on the net, it was a real 'long wheel base' rabbit, probably crossed with one of the belgian hares or something from the park. It must have been an 8 pounder but I suppose that it was half expected in a place like that. It still had me worried when it hit the net all the same . . . OTC
  15. MC, I have only ever used steel rings on my nets so I really don't know if I am missing out on something, I will have to make some up on sliders and try them out next winter I suppose. I have never experienced any problems from using rings, and since I normally set my nets with the bottom ring pushed into the ground, I wonder how such a thing is possible with a slider . . . . . . or whether it is unneccessary. Thought provoking thread . . . OTC
  16. I remember that one - When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old, He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold; With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand For God and for valour he rode through the land. No charger have I, and no sword by my side, Yet still to adventure and battle I ride, Though back into storyland giants have fled, And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead. Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed 'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed; And let me set free, with the sword of my youth, From the castle of darkn
  17. Keep a pocket diary of what was set and where, and what you catch. That's what I used to do. Then you can see which seasons and sites catch better than others for different species. It all helps OTC
  18. LL - however you use them make sure they don't get left set and forgotten this time please . . . I am sure Woodga or one of the other snare masters on here will explain better how to use them than I can. See the pinned messages at the top of this forum for some superb advice from Mr Waters on snaring. OTC
  19. My eldest came home from junior school singing that to himself one day with his own lyrics as he obviously heard the big kids singing it and he just sang what he though they sang . . . ' . . . . Dance then, wherever you may be, for I am the Lord of the Damp Settee . . .' Tears rolled down my face that day I can tell you . . . OTC
  20. I seem to remember singing along to Kum Bye Yah (spelling) in my youth amongst others in the school assembly hall. I also remember being played pieces of classical music like Greensleeves, Tochatta and Fugue, Four Seasons etc they must have had some effect as I can still remember them now . . . OTC
  21. Those goldfinches reminded me of some pure bred Red Legged Partridges I used to have - they were leucistic and looked like bleached out plumage, a sort of pinky gold colour. I have some old photos somewhere - I will see if I can find them out. OTC
  22. Sounds like the work of a two legged fox to me LLoyd - easy pickings for poachers, pheasant traps OTC
  23. I had two brother hobs as a lad (Snowy and Baloo), my first two ferrets ever, and they lived for 12 and 13 years respectively. My others seemed to live about 6 or 7 years on average. OTC
