  1. I used a LEE Load-All years ago for reloading 12 and 20 bore cases and it did a fair job but I am not really sure how exact the measurements of shot and powder were, and cannot compare to any other loader as I only used that one. My cartridges were only used for vermin control so it was a cost saving measure as much as anything. OTC
  2. Nice tie CW! Is that Kim Lathaen in the background under the NFWS sign? I am off to read through a few 'Steve on Stuffing' articles from yesteryear . . . OTC
  3. WH I stopped my own subscription due to the repetitive nature of the articles and the apparent inadequacies of some of the columnists - not the same calibre as back in the days of 'Shooting News', that's for sure. OTC
  4. During my 'keepering apprenticeship, my headkeeper recounted stories of rooks collecting up dummy partridge eggs, back in the days of the Euston system of 'keepering, and dropping them in frustration at the bottom of the rookery trees. If they would steal sham eggs then they would sure enough be hoping that they offered a meal. Carrions are without doubt the worst pheasant and partridge egg thieves on two wings, followed closely by the magpie but I have no doubt that rooks in any number would be up there on the list of predators. The Eley Game Advisory in the 1950's quickly came to the same, w
  5. LL, If they are not genuine, stamped, FENN or Springer traps then they cannot legally be used in accordance with the Spring Traps Approval Order, which can be found pinned at the top of this forum. OTC
  6. I have to say that I am with Tote on the candlepower issue - I don't need massive amounts of light for my business and personally believe has been responsible for most lamp shy foxes you encounter (who have had their retinas burned out before). My game will solely be for rabbits and in relatively small fields so I don't need the brighter light. I personally think it is a hindrance rather than a help. OTC
  7. Thanks for your responses lads - It sounds like the Lazerlite is the tool for what I want. Now then, has anyone got a good one for sale at a resonable price? No wrecks please . . . OTC
  8. Nice collection you got there Moley, if you get any spares/swaps anytime then let me know . . . OTC
  9. Borderboy, Copper wire is not strong enough for rabbit snares - you need brass wire (or steel cable as a last resort) to make them with. One kink and the rabbit will break free which sounds just like what has happened. OTC
  10. Lads, I have been out of the lamping game for a while and need to get my hands on a new lamp and battery for lurcher work on rabbits, not rifle shooting. Before I start searching in earnest I wondered what you could recommend. I must stress that I am not in the least interested in massive candlepower lights - they ruin the game as far as I am concerned. I have used and abused a Deben Blue Eye 200,000CP lamp for years and it is not reliable now so I am looking for a similar modern lamp unit with 200 - 500,000 CP pin spot beam and a suitable power supply. What do you reckon? OTC
  11. I push them into the tunnel as far as the chain will allow - this keeps them well within the law, and permits safe and successful operation of the trap. It also allows you to check for captures without lying down to peer through and getting your scent all over the site. I also, rightly or wrongly, have always set them at earth level and thrown a handful of leaf mold or light soil over the plate - taking care not to overdo it and affect the operation of the mechanism. I also set them as fine as I dare as those little bitch weasels weigh next to nothing! OTC
  12. I saw three peregrines mid-week just gone and they were marvellous to see, one falcon came quite close to me on the thermals in the hills. Truly breathtaking birds OTC
  13. Definitely a sparrowhawk, not a peregrine OTC
  14. I made a couple of crow cages out of pheasant pen sections 12 x 6 foot with a strip of platic coated pig netting down the middle of the top for entry and they worked ok, but a purpose built ladder seemed to do better, especially when you add the curtains of mesh otherwise some of your captives will simply fly back out again especially jackdaws. Jackdaws, magpies and jays will also use a funnel side entrance so it is worth putting one of those in at one end at least. OTC
  15. MT, I would be interested to hear what you find out in your comparisons between the Fenn and Springer; it interests me both as a trapper and as someone particularly interested in trap invention and development. Personally I always found that the early Springer 4's seemed to set more 'smoothly' than the Fenns but my own comparisons took place before the Chinese imported steel and traps arrived on the scene. There was little to choose between them as far as killing ability back then, but I always bought direct from Fenn and had my business account with them. OTC
  16. WH, He is coming along nicely - you can see the collie in him coming out with that cat-like sneaking up on the dummy. Try not to do too much in a session otherwise he might get bored and start nasty habits like walking off with the dummy, or putting it down Nice, pretty looking dog though. OTC
  17. All I can say is my snaring has been revolutionised overnight by the direct help and guidance of snareman, and indirectly from woodga through this site. I caught many thousands of rabbits each year back in my day using wires but I am sure my efforts would have been doubly rewarded if I had known what I now know sooner. OTC
  18. So far as I was told the Falconry Fair was not at its best, and spoiled further by the parachute accident in the main arena OTC
  19. Mist net, Did you get the customary dive bombing attacks from the mistle thrushes whilst taking that pic? They are some persistent and protective birds. I have not seen a Mistle clutch for few years - that pic brought back a few memories. I used to find them in an avenue of pollarded lime trees on my way to school . . . OTC
  20. I took my lad out for a short walk to look for a few bird's nests yesterday and found a few. I found a nice wren's nest tucked into an old stone wall made ornately with bracken fronds and lined with feathers, a song thrush in the garden hedge with 5 eggs, a hedge sparrow with about 5 hungry newly hatched chicks and these - Long tailed tits nest in a small feral bush - the entrance was on the other site but I didn't want to disturb the site too much to take the pic And this pied wagtail's clutch under a box bush on top of the farm wall. They nested in a similar site last yea
  21. Lads, These are good strong pups, well bred from working lines and kennelled and reared well. I have just been to reserve my own bitch pup from the litter and I believe there are one or two left, so get in quick. OTC
  22. I had a friend's dog over to my kennels whilst he went on holiday once (ESS) and she did exactly that type of damage in a bid to escape; they grab the wire and dig their feet in and pull up and back. That said, I wouldn't offer a refund - it is nothing to do with you now. Just MHO OTC
  23. I still think it is a badly sited amateurish attempt at a tunnel for a trap - obviously the maker of it has little idea of what he is doing . . . OTC
  24. Little Lloyd, Don't stretch the ladder openings up to the edges of the trap either otherwise jacks will climb the side wire and straight out. Once they escape you will never catch them again - get it right first time! OTC
