I welded some 9" stainless steel pins onto 3" steel fox net rings and they are just the job and last for years OTC
  2. I can vouch for these pups - I have one of the litter sitting in my kennel now OTC Edited to say: just read the other post (Bed x Whip) so I now see where this is all going
  3. I have got B&W photographs of old figure 4 stone deadfalls Ditch (remember the article on Warreners I wrote for the Oz newsletter?) if they are the ones you have flickering around in the back of your memory??? OTC
  4. As promised these are some line drawings of the Gist Hutch Trap from a book I have circa 1790. The trap was made entirely from stone with a sliding slate door at one or both ends and was employed to catch 'foxes and other vermin' by gamekeepers and warreners. 'It was made as a 4 sided stone trap with holes in the 'cover stone' to take the wooden mechanism for the trip plate. The cover stone was drilled with two or more shallow holes, 1 1/4" in diameter - in these holes were placed wooden posts which connected by strings or wires to the slate shutters' I hope th
  5. I have to say that I abstain from the stuff on a day to day basis, but I have had my moments over the years  If I am pushed I will go to Vodka and Coke, maybe a cold crisp pint of cider. My hipflask is always full of my own home made sloe gin though - now that is nectar! OTC
  6. LL - read the post - he ran over the pheasant he didn't shoot it . . . OTC
  7. Do you regard B.O.P as vermin otc? Absolutely not, and it wouldn't be long before you were carted off to jail for taking any action against them either. That is not at all what I meant - I think I am right in saying that I know the origin of that particular bird that has been mounted by hok boi that is all. OTC
  8. Eddie, Was he Royal or Merchant Navy, Army or Air Force? All 3 Services have their own medal offices where you can simply make contact and with permission (from his widow or next of kin) and they will release his Service documents which will hold all of the campaign and long service awards that he received or was entitled to. If the medals were never issued then they will still be holding them for him, if they were issued then you can get suitable replacements including the correct ribbons from places like wms@wprcmedals.com rdhmedals@aol.com . His ID number will hold the key to his mi
  9. . . . and then danced around by countless badgers and pine martens , then torched on a blanket of juncas rush . . . OTC
  10. If anyone is hell bent on reproducing Idstone's plan I have the original work here dated late 1800's which I might try to put up if my scanner plays the game. OTC
  11. They are early birds - must be one of the first hatches then? They will be good and strong in October. It has been a great weekend for releasing birds - no rain or thunderstorms so typical when you don't want it! OTC
  12. The nest looks like that of a water rail, but I cannot remember what their eggs look like it has been such a long time since I last saw one. OTC
  13. I would lean more towards red grouse personally although I cannot say for certain as I have never seen one for real. That bilberry in the pic sort of gave me a clue . . . OTC
  14. Those type of people really don't meet with the job description of 'game-keepers' IMO, they are just glorified free-range chicken farmers. OTC
  15. Borderboys, I have a vast 'keepering library but I have to admit most of my titles are from way back when gin traps were legal and the Euston System was still in its infancy! The modern books don't tend to have much detail or rely on the principle of releasing more game to cope with losses through bad husbandry (vermin, disease, straying etc) One book I would recommend would be Game Conservation by Charles Coles which is a big volume but is well worth its weight as a standard reference to the subject, with its roots set in Game Conservancy heritage. They do show up on eBay, i
  16. Great reply Big Fish , I wouldn't have remembered that much myself, plus I always used Western incubators with moving air systems. I would have said that the humidity might have been too low at the hatching stage, where I would have removed the trays to the hatcher. OTC
  17. I have a Theoben Fenman myself which is a great little rifle, and I can thoroughly recommend the gas ram system but I have never handled anything that has been converted to a gas ram from a springer. OTC
  18. Great to see again Frank - that first one was a good run, and a sudden stop! Thanks OTC
  19. AF, The disease is actually Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (VHD) but the symptoms and contamination you described are correct so far as I am aware, although I have never seen any victims myself. OTC
  20. Not much round here either, not the sort of numbers you have anyway! OTC
  21. Me too - it works a treat. If the dog can get to the cut I usually cover it up with vet tape (that crinkly self sticking stuff that doesn't bond with the fur). OTC
