  1. I have a healthy fear/distrust/aversion, call it what you will, to women with green eyes. They are all plain scary, full stop. Maybe it has something to do with my dim and distant past . . . OTC
  2. Bateman?? Don't make me laugh Moley Between us I think Ditch and I have forgotten far more than the likes of T B and his merry band of men ever knew or ever thought could be uncovered. They will, I am sure, roll in their graves when they find out ~ since Ditch is no longer persuing the quest, then I have taken up the reins to produce the full and unequivical volume of the history of British Traps, including all those unusual names on the gin traps, and the varieties of the more modern types. You'll have to bear with me though ~ such a lifetime of knowledge simply cannot turn it
  3. Selfset Mouse Traps do the business with the Wood Mice - here's this morning's catch, as dead as dead can be OTC
  4. Ditch, Whilst we're talking about it, why don't we ressurrect the Everitt Trap - it has the same tunnel type aperture and a pair of killing jaws that pin the victim to the roof of the trap. That would be one I'd like to see being used again - or at least a high tensile steel spring version - perhaps not disimilar to the Maclachlan Trap?? What do you reckon?? OTC
  5. Now that would be a good idea! Just the same but 50% smaller in dimension? I am sure that would be a killer on weasels and stoats too . . . Maybe a flocked interior would help with the rat vs shiny steel issue? My own trap has been painted on the outside to camouflage it, I was not sure if it came that way or was done by the trapper - whatever, it will certainly be one I dig out in the morning for a 'test drive' and refamiliarisation. OTC
  6. I will have to have a play with the one I have tomorrow - I cannot honestly say that I have tried to set it. I just thought it looked interesting and bought it, a long time ago. Apparently they are demon on squirrels too OTC
  7. I seem to remember someone having one of those Ray Mears canvas bed rolls for sale some time back, and thought it might have been on here. If it was, and it is still for sale, please PM me as my lad is looking for one if it is not too expensive Thanks all, OTC
  8. The 3 I caught up in my attic last night were wood mice, and all dead and stiff in the traps this morning. The all-metal Self Set traps did their job admirably. It seems the wood mice come in from the cold at this time of year and I have the same one or two that make their prescence known and have to be caught. I have not got any experience with the type of trap that Ditch is prescribing myself, but I am very sure that he is sufficiently experienced to be able to comment on most traps you're likely to come across, including that one. OTC
  9. Mad, I always thought that traps for rats, mice and moles did not have to be specifically approved for use as they are domestic vermin which might account for the influx of cheaply made Chinky traps available which are poorly engineered to say the least. I set a trio of SelfSet mouse traps in my loft last night and have got a full house this morning - I like them, they rarely need adjusting and rarely, if ever, have any non lethal strikes. OTC
  10. I have had very limited experience with long nets myself, mainly for daytime use, but I have always used hazel wands. I seem to remember that an old boy once told me that birch makes strong and light pegs too but have never tried them myself. OTC
  11. LL - they might not be as thick on the ground as they are on your 'Little Avon' but there are mink running the ditches at DS's place - I have seen the ground with my own eyes mate. OTC
  12. Monty, I am with Sky at home and you must beware that whilst it advertises 16 meg speed then it depends on how many people are on that feed from the exchange - mine only runs at 3.6 meg. I have had some snags with the software too. I am with Tiscali at work and that is far superior IMO OTC
  13. PM coyote on here, that's who I got mine from and she is a great little dog OTC
  14. Ducks will go one of 2 ways IMO - they will lift and rise out of gunshot when you're still 700 yards away or you have to get into the water and throw them up. There doesn't seem to be a logical answer to the problem either. I did have some success feeding them out onto stubble or onto a smaller pond that you could get them up off, and standing the guns between food and home but ducks will be ducks!! OTC
  15. I ate one of those once too - I found it on my trap rounds after it had hit a powerline and I thought, well, it's just a big white goose isn't it ??? . . . .  It was bloody horrible. I have had squirrel, coot, eels, pike, hedgepig, and a few exotics like alligator, ostrich, boar etc in my time too. OTC
  16. I have one of those pipe traps in my collection, but I never thought of using it. Where would you stand with the legality issue since they are not on the Approval Order?? OTC
  17. I might have to mate, if there isn't anyone selling them over here at the moment. It just seems a bit odd for them to have been given the go-ahead by the Ministry but no-one with a business plan to get them bulk shipped in to cover the inevitable demand for the 'new' traps. Someone is missing out on a decent pay packet - I would do it myself but I don't have the spare time to manage the mini enterprise unfortunately. OTC
  18. Getting back on track again ~ Does anyone know a UK distributor of the DOC series of traps? I would like to add one of each type to my collection and maybe try a few out in the tunnels. The only references I can find on the 'Net are from NZ which seems odd as I am sure that there is money to be made there somewhere importing them in. I have contacted Solway Feeders about their 'new' Mk 4 and 6 traps and they appear to be nothing more than a 'Far Eastern' made copy of the Fenn pattern but with stronger springs as Ditch and I suspected. OTC
  19. I know a ranger in the forests of Buckinghamshire who has a fair few of them to deal with at certain times of the year - he uses Monarch type rat cages to good effect. They require a DEFRA license for removal too as I remember OTC
  20. To get back on track here a little ~ The new variation to the approval order appears to have come as a shock to most folks, myself excepted. Perhaps you should ask yourself why DEFRA have considered new traps for approval to begin with? What is wrong with the 'old' ones? This might seem a bit like deja vu for those old enough to remember the banning of my precious gin traps back in the 1950's, but ban them they did, simply from a humanity point of view. Food for thought - maybe there's more to this than is apparent at first glance . . . OTC
  21. Ditch, There might be more to this than is initially apparent :secret: I'll be back later to add my two penny worth OTC
  22. Really?? Perhaps I am just too underqualified to comment. Good luck with your net making. OTC
  23. Leave him to it MC - he obviously knows what he's doing I'm just off to start a 100 yard net with 200 yards of netting, I should finish the first row by Saturday . . . OTC
