  1. if you havent got much experience in training dogs iwould take the advice thats being given and let one pup go to a good home as you will find it very hardto train 2 dogs to a high standard ,ive just tried it! 2 springers and i thought i could do it but i had to give one up as it wasnt fair on either pup good luck mate

    how exciting!

me and wife just been on a hawkwalk down in yorkeshire and we had the opportunity to handle and release a harris hawk and recall it and to say i was impressed is an under statement! we loved every minute of it and these birds are very clever indeed the bloke that took usout was very informative and friendly and certainly knew his stuff i can see how you people get hooked on this fascinating sport
  3. get a springer x beagle you wont be dissapointed they excell at barking and flushing!
  4. well i was suspended from the forum for airing my views on this subject ok so i might havebeen a bit silly stating the obvious way to sort out the problem so i apologise if i upset any one i dont normally read this dept so i think i will keep off and leave it to the experts
  5. well you chose well mate before i started with gun dogs i kept collies 20 odd years and believe me they are cracking dogs to work with but and its a big but dont get to harsh with them as they take the huff very seriously and they lose your trust just be firm and let them know whos the boss [as with any dog] and im sure you will end up ok my dogs all hunted retrieved gaurded and were great family pets so YES you can get them to do most things a gun dog can do -atb billy
  6. keep trying mate hope you get sorted -atb billy
  7. well done to you for your persistance mate im sure your going in the right direction and it will all come good in the end -atb billy
  8. i agree festa mate dodgy subject but i use my descretion and only then would i go ahead with the shot not one for killing some kids pet thats for sure
  9. very very good natured banter with this thread lads god knows what would have happened had this been on the lurcher section :hmm:
  10. well lads i hate feral cats so if it was me and i had the appropriate rifle it would have been lights out for moggy .i dont mind pet ones tho its just that feral cats cause a fair bit of damage to song birds and i prefer song birds to ferals
  11. well paulus you seem to have the best of both worlds with them 2 dogs but imo a gun dog is a gun dog and a lurcher is a lurcher love to see both excel but in their own field of work
  12. my 1st gun dog was a little cocker that was very easy to train but i DID have to keep on top of it all the time she was well admired on the shoots that i beat on for her work rate but given the choice it would be a springer if i was in your shoes, as im training a young dog just now and they are much more biddable with a good prey drive .but before you get your dog just read through a few of these posts and work out what type of work you want it for dont rule out the lab tho great dogs that WILL do a good job but prepare yourself for a hell of alot of hard work as you only get out of your dog
  13. yes nic it gives me great satisfaction to see all the hard work paying off when you go on the dogs 1st beating day and it all comes good fingers crossed koda makes the grade
  14. good luck mate fingers crossed you get a good one
  15. well done mate and yes ive had the same thing happen to me loads of times
  16. my mate uses same as me accupel they do the job mate
  17. ive never actually owned a ,177 in any form mate but the mk 2 rapid i own is a pure work horse i just get it out of the bag load it and bingo its ready to shoot with 400 plus shots per fill its the buissiness mate and ive owned it for about 12 years with not one problem [touch wood]
  18. once again i went looking for magpies in freezing wet conditions and came up trumps with a few more to add to my tally 1st to fall was a woody [for my tea] then i dropped a crow and 3 magpies within the space of an hour and by then i wasnt feeling the cold just a nice warm sense of satisfaction knowing a few more song birds would have a better chance this comming summer
  19. woke up yesterday morning to a sheet of black ice covering the whole of the north east with accidents /crashes happening every where i went out with the pup but it was treacherous trying to walk in it -even koda couldnt stay on his feet but as the day went on it started raining and the temperatures rose a bit which prompted me to risk a long walk with koda here,s a couple of pics of him enjoying himself
