Number of foxes well done this year due to rifle men!
tegater replied to mighty dino's topic in General Talk
It's not all 4 x 4. Up here in the pennines there are many places you can't use one for fox control, and then of course my favorite kind of fox work is the ambush across a valley, or moor, after days of ons, working out the best place to be for the shot, taking into account the route the fox will come in, the wind speed and direction, the back stop etc. I love the adrenaline when the grouse start growling or the curlew start going mad at the imminent approach of the vixen into your killing ground. I love the fact the fox doesn't know the fear of its imminent death. It's just lights out....... -

what will you shoot when you and the rest of the marksmen have killed all in your area and the surrounding area , oh and all the other surrounding areas, no adults to move in, no cubs to shoot spring time, oh dear we have messed it up not only for us but everyone else and of course the fox Hares are slightly different, but in the right place, foxes need killing. You will not wipe out foxes in mainland Britain, there are to many places, (infact the majority of places) where fixes are not controlled at all. If we were wiping them out then fox kills would go down each year......guess what...th -

Why scary, you obviously dont know the law or read it before making a comment. Just because they have a cert. does not allow them to by a shotgun or shoot one unsupervised without adults. Oh im sorry if you dont agree ....but my personal preference would be not to let a junior have access to a shotgun whether supervised or not...bet most of that age cant even tie there own shoe laces let alone grasp the ramifications of the power a shotgun if used incorrectly....its easy to say supervised this and supervised that...lettin a child under the age of 10 access to a shotgun just beggars belief -
How many do you want me to send you...........

Yep... they go mad for them.

I am keen that this doesn't turn into a rifleman verses dogman type of thread because it does nobody any good, but it does amaze me at times, when On this forum the rifleman gets accused of ruining the sport for others. Personally, I don't go out and shoot, trap or wire snares, for the sport, I do it to kill foxes that are someplace that they stand a high chance of killing gamebirds or livestock. The fact that I enjoy what I do, doesn't make it a sport, and I don't see it as a competion with the lurcher men or the local rogue pack, that hunt the same area. Admittedly friendly banter will g -
shotgun and firearms licences should i apply ?
tegater replied to willbur's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It matters not what anybody on here thinks, you would be better off talking to your feo, or licensing manager. They will give you the current up to date advice for your area. -
Not a bad looking set in that one picture, good for netting

Issuing a kid under 10 with a shotgun certificate gives that child no advantage with what they can do with that shotgun, but what it does hopefully ensure is some form of responsibility, from that child. I had my cert from a very young age, and when I renew it next year, my young lad will probably apply for his. -

We only have to shoot them because the dog men cant catch them -
I generally just spread the ferrets about. i.e. if working 3 ferrets on a burry at one time, I will go left, centre and right. I personally have no preference for whether they go uphill or downhill. I believe that alot of the time, rabbits will move around under ground, and there is a lot of randomness, to what goes on. What I have noticed though, is that a large proportion of rabbits will bolt downhill, but that is probably because I nearly always stand above the burry. I have no doubt that others will have a completly diffferent view.

A few years ago I had a perception acadia kayak, and used it for fishing on holidays only. I cut down a cheap spinning rod to about 2 foot, and then used it static or almost static, to jig a team of feathers for mackeral, and pollock. Yes it was good and very enjoyable, especially the time of Ardnamurchan when basking sharks were right alongside!

Snap......... but you beat me by 15, well done. Decoyed mine in and used fox whistle. At least none got away.

I'm finding the same on some of my warrens that are amongst bilberrys, gorse etc. I sometimes wonder whether there is still to much undergrowth, and many of them are still living on the tops. Open burries in pasture are different, there seems to be plenty at home in these.

Sounds like netrigger will sort you out, but the way I do it, is to use my thumb to hold the twine tight against the mesh board and tighten the knot down onto it. Doing it this way means no twine passes over skin as the knot tightens, and touch wood all my knots hold fast. When I first started tying, I thought I had a couple that slipped on my first net, but on investigation all it was, was that I had missed a turn. Hope you get it sorted.
-
I've found that as well. The crimson red twine from Agouti is very heavy duty compared to the flo colours.

Nice net mate. I use spun poly but have never had a problem with it being hard on the fingers although I have heard others talk about it. Which part of making the knots is doing the damage to your fingers? Are you using a mesh board or doing it the old fashioned way?

Call bird ideally with a carcass if possible.

Hope you have a steady hand while drilling Even more testing, a polo with a patch stuck over the back of it, placed on a piece of wood. Put the pellet through the hole without breaking the mint! We do a similar thing with centrfire rifle at 100m with a cd/dvd, with a patch over the hole. Quite a good little test, belive me.

Nice write up and cracking pics, a good day for the kids as well, they look keen. I take it yer dogs called "Radar" with ears like that.... bet it doesnt miss a trick How stable are those dunes when you have to dig them out, are the pipes liable to collapse?
-
Nice bag, but sounds like bloody hard work! Well done.
-
Proper west country hedges those, look ideal for bunnies. Well done and some cracking weather.
-
Once she has caught her first bunny in one, she will be hooked. I agree though, get onto spun poly, with some bright colours. That's terrific though for an 8 year old. Well done her!
