  1. Bigthug, the ACPO agreed use of the AOLQ condition is that the quarry used to show good reason is stated, followed by "and any other lawful quarry". So if you have .243 for fox (no reason why you shouldn't, perfectly good for the little buggers) the condition SHOULD read "For the shooting of FOX and any other lawful quarry" This means that you can shoot deer with it, as long as it is a deer legal caliber and you follow the bullet weight and muzzle energy rules, with an expanding head. The condition says ANY other lawful quarry. It does not say any other lawful quarry that's smaller t
  2. I don't think there's much difference in the quality between old and new. I've shot a load of Weihrauchs of various types and vintages and never noticed any discernible difference between old and new guns. The main difference is the price! If you can find a second hand HW80, in good condition and shooting a decent energy level, then you'll get a lot more for your money than buying a brand new one! Buy it second hand, and look after it, and you'll never lose money with a Weihrauch!
  3. I've just been sent a link to a thing called the "Red Thunder" exploding airgun pellets. Red Thunder exploding pellets video Now, I've had a look around, and I'm of the opinion that these things would be illegal in the UK. I base that on my reading of the Firearms act 1968, section 5.1.C which says:- 5 Weapons subject to general prohibition 1 A person commits an offence if, without the authority of the Defence Council [F8or the Scottish Ministers (by virtue of provision made under section 63 of the Scotland Act 1998)], he has in his possession, or purchases or acquires, or man
  4. Oops, didn't see this thread. Just posted the same footage!
  5. Was just nosing through a couple of airgun pages on FB, and someone posted a link to a video up. I scanned through it, and spotted a couple of sinister looking faces at 16:50. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arK8wCNvavg&feature=youtu.be Reminded me I've been away from here for a while, things have been totally manic. How's everybody doing? I need to crack the air rifle out and come to a meet some time! Anything going on soon?
  6. What a load of shit! How can they stop you from pursuing a perfectly legal hobby because of your home situation?
  7. No fixed address, and no land to prove your good reason. As things stand you won't be considered. As for the depression, not necessarily a bar, it would depend on the severity and how well you have recovered.
  8. First step, speak to one of the shooting organisations. BASC can be pretty helpful, I've heard good things about the NGO etc. They might want you to join up (but that shouldn't be a problem, as you get insurance thrown in) but they will generally fight your corner for you.
  9. 10X??? I've shot deer with a .243 at 150 yards with a 4x mag scope. Big mag isn't always a good thing. In fact, you tend to get more glass for your money with a lower mag scope.
  10. All down to the conditions on the FAC. Jonno, you don't "have land on your ticket". You might have a condition limiting you to shooting over land which the chief of police for the area has approved, but I've never seen an FAC that limits the shooter to one particular piece of land. If the conditions on your FAC relating to the shotgun include the "approved by the chief officer of police" line then you can only use it on checked ground. If it doesn't then you can use it anywhere. How they condition it is entirely down to the relevant licencing authority, so it is probably best asking th
  11. For a new, first issue FAC you're unlikely to have the less restrictive land condition in most of England. I don't know what Northumberland are like though. Have you phoned them to ask if the new land has been checked? If they use land checks, then the chances are at least some of it has been already. Get them to note down each new piece that you ask about, it only helps later on when you want to open up your cert.
  12. Break their necks so they can't give evidence next time.
  13. whippet, how old are you? "define autism". Well, to be accurate, people have an illness that is on the autistic spectrum (often called an "autistic spectrum disorder" or ASD). It is a huge variety of conditions, behaviours and difficulties that can manifest itself in a wide variety of ways. It is typically characterized by social deficits, communication difficulties, stereotyped or repetitive behaviors and interests, and in some cases, cognitive delays. So it can be recognised as an inability to interact with the world around you, either emotionally or functionally. omet
  14. So you're looking either for a mentor who has land they can take you out on, or someone who is willing to travel to your land?
  15. Would a modern gun be any more accurate? No. Would it be any quieter? No. The .22LR is a rifle that doesn't wear out barrels, and older guns are capable of as much accuracy as newer guns, given that you've found the right ammunition for it. The noise is down to the ammunition, and the moderator to a certain extent, not the rifle. If you have the same mod, and the same ammunition your noise levels will be similar. A newer mod might reduce your noise signature a tiny bit, but changing your rifle won't.
  16. Your best bet is to contact some of the course providers. BASC are generally pretty helpful and will be able to tell you if any of their providers can take you. Also Jelen on here might be able to help you, drop them a pm on here.
  17. The paper WILL compress with time, causing your zero to wander. Whip them off and replace it with negative. It's dimensionally stable so your mounts will stay where you put them. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to stop people getting rid of guns because they won't hold zero, because they've shimmed the mounts with something unstable.
  18. Agree with "the one" There's one guaranteed way to fnork up your chances, and that's to lie, or try to hide anything. They WILL find out, and if you've tried to hold anything back they will bung your application straight in the bin. They might do that anyway, but you don't stand any chance if they think you have lied! A lot depends on the types of crime, and how severe they were, and how long ago they occurred. Anything involving firearms abuse it's unlikely to be good news. If it's for fighting/violent crime then they will not look favourably on it. Get the forms in and you'll find out!
  19. Does it just lock back the block and leave the next cartridge in the magazine? If so, check that the spring on the magazine cut-off is fitted and not damaged. It often gets bent/broken, and the cut-off flaps around in the breeze. It almost inevitably ends up closed, stopping the next cartridge from feeding. If not that, then look at the cleaning regime as stated above.
  20. You might struggle to make the necessary MV. A 20" barrel is quite short, and the .243 has a tendency to drop off quickly, being a high density load. You might reach dangerous pressures before you reach deer legal MV's. Twelve feet from the muzzle should make very little difference to the velocity, certainly not enough to push it up to legal levels!
  21. Your pushing the 100gr pill at 2670 fps or so to give 1580 ft.lb. To make the deer legal energy level (1700 ft.lb) with a 100gr pill you need 2770 fps. So you need to find another 100 fps or so. Your shortened barrel won't be helping you. For the .243, various figures are given, but you can expect a drop per inch below the standard 22" barrel of between 25 fps/inch and 50 fps/inch. So if your barrel were a "standard" 22", then you might JUST make the required velocity. It surprises me that the Norma are loaded so anaemically. Do you have any pictures of the fired cases?
  22. Capreolus, not quite correct I'm afraid. You have to be 17 before you can take advantage of the "estate rifle" clause. For a 14 year old to fire a rifle they would either need to have it on their own FAC, or be using the weapon at a HO approved range. Most DSC courses use ranges which are not HO approved, so William, you wouldn't be able to complete the shooting part of the DSC. There's no reason you couldn't get your own FAC though, DSC is not required for an FAC, but you would need to get your parents to OK it first. Does your dad have an FAC?
  23. Beat you Adam, mine cost £1 from a charity shop!
