SportingShooter, not exhausted, "considered" -
Tron, bad idea. Barrel threading is not like running a thread on to any old piece of bar. Great care needs to be taken to ensure the thread runs concentric to the bore. The bore doesn't always run central, or true in the barrel. You also need to consider the rifling which can cause the barrel to sit off centre. Get it done by a proper gunsmith who knows what they're doing. As for proofing, most rifles when threaded don't need proofing. Don't get started on that one!

Headshots Not Killing
matt_hooks replied to DeepEarth's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Firstly, stop shooting at rabbits until the problem is sorted. Now a few questions. What range are they being shot at? How does he know he's hitting them in the head? What is the rifle, and in which caliber? Answer those and then we might be able to offer an opinion. -
I read that too quickly, thought it said "decoy cows with it". Was thinking that's not very sporting! lol

Who said anything about rounds? I want the rifle!

Bring me a .338LM back ok? Keep safe, we'll save a few bunnies for you! If you miss the return fire, we can train them to use a .22 if you like?

T.H.L Air gun section meet,5,6,7,October 2012
matt_hooks replied to davyt63's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Right, I'll start saving up now, and hope that nothing goes pear shaped between now and then. I WILL make one of these meets at some point. The first one was great and it looks like they're going from strength to strength! -
I was looking around on the net, and found this new method of "shooting" clays. I'll have to have a go at it some time, my hit rate can't get much worse!

There are no set specifications that a cabinet "has" to be for a shotgun. Police tend to prefer a BS cabinet, but it's not essential, as long as the guns are secured to a similar standard. Remember though, that the conditions on your SGC make it your responsibility to ensure the security of the weapons at all times. Any decent deadlock will do the job. The ones on lockmonster would be fine. http://www.lockmonst...binet-lock.html and seem a decent price at £16 each. Edited to add, just found some much cheaper, £4.50 plus vat each! http://www.morganlocks.net/shop/product.php?id_produ

Operator, I've been looking for the end cap for bleeding ages. If you can find the company you got it from, please post it on here!

Tell me about it Tony. I'm told the meds I'm on "shouldn't" affect my memory, so I guess it must have been the two lots of OHS, and the 5 hours on the heart/lung machine that did it I'm lucky, no painkillers needed now, tramadol was a b*****d though! I was going to write something else, but I forget what it was

Tin foil is the best thing. It's harder than the rust, but not as hard as the steel underneath. It'll clean the rust off but won't scratch the barrel. It's an old trick I learnt from some classic car nuts, it's common for getting rid of rust on chromed components. Once you've got rid of the rust, make sure you wipe down with a lightly oiled rag after use, and after touching the barrel, to prevent it rusting again. As for the bolts, replace them. They cost about 5p each on eBay.

matt_hooks replied to Skot Ruthless Teale's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Sure you didn't get a cleaner kill by doing them hahahahahaha You dont realy think i cleaned them do you.?Not my thing..But i dont mind washing the dishe's every now and then Atb Marty No I ment the washing up liquid is for cleaning and they say it makes it more accurate so would of been a cleaner kill, it's funnier if I don't explain it aha No it's not. -
Tony, I believe I mentioned coccidiosis in post 11, as a possible cause!

You're responsible for the safe keeping of the firearms at all times. Either get the safe properly mounted and get your rifle in it, or you'd need to leave them with an RFD while you move.

Ghillies, lungworm live inside the bronchi of the lungs. They are fine white threadlike worms. In a recently dead rabbit you'll probably see them move when you cut in to the lung. There can also be heart worm, which are a similar looking worm but inside the heart. A rabbit with a serious heartworm or lungworm infection is going to be in pretty poor shape generally. I'm interested in Mixy in humans. Can you show me a link with info about zoonosis of mixy between rabbits and humans? I've always been lead to believe that the organism isn't infective to humans. In fact I've just found a refere

Yes, that'll work, but the free rolling bearing makes things easier imho. Self aligning, and you can get a piece of wood and roll it around in big circles, so you can get rid of more material with less effort, and get the desired effect more quickly.

washing and lubeing pellets?
matt_hooks replied to Skot Ruthless Teale's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Prob, I was bored the other day, so I bunged a tin of pellets in my ultrasonic cleaner. They all looked clean and there was no visible swarf or lead. I should have taken a picture, but when I took them out of the cleaner they left a lot of lead residue in the bottom of the cleaner. That extra lead can't help things. It's easy to say "I've done it without for years and I don't have any problems" but how do you know if you might be able to shoot straighter and better if you wash them? I generally don't bother, but that's because I'm a lazy git. I'm not about to start calling som -
Tony, so I googled the names of some parts of the life cycle, doesn't make any difference to how correct the info is. I have dealt with hundreds of deer, some with far worse looking livers than that pic, and each and every one has been passed fit for the food chain. The lump on the shoulder is "possibly" a tapeworm cyst, and would result in the rejection of the carcass. Of course it could be an old injury, maybe a poorly placed air rifle shot or some kind of puncture wound. That liver is infected with something but I'd be inclined to say not fluke. Fluke damage tends to show some h

There are Tony, but none of them in the UK is zoonotic except for tularemia, and that's incredibly rare in the UK (I've never heard of a case in the UK).

If only you were nearer. -
Tickle, as long as you have informed them of the move (you don't need to do it before you move, but it's best to get ahead as you have) you still have an FAC so you can still use your rifles/guns.

The liver fluke life cycle is very interesting. You can't catch fluke by eating the "adult" animal. There are several stages of life cycle that have to be gone through before you can become infected. Infection is via ingestion of "metacarcaria" which attach themselves to vegetation in damp areas. This is why most liver fluke is found in grazing herbivores (cows, sheep, deer, rabbits etc.). Most people who acquire a liver fluke infection do so by eating unwashed watercress. Once the metacarceria reach the gut, they excyst and migrate through the duodenal wall, into the abdominal cavity,

Tony, why not eat a rabbit with liver fluke? Half the deer I shoot every year have some fluke, and there's absolutely no reason not to eat them. The fluke lives only in the liver (so obviously you don't eat that bit) and the rest of the animal is perfectly safe to enter the food chain. Obviously cooking the meat properly adds an additional layer of safety. There are several other infections that can cause spotting on the liver, and if there is spotting on the lungs then it's definitely not fluke causing it. That's not to say the spots on the liver aren't fluke related. Tony, lungwo
