    If you look at the top of the forum it explains all about SGC (shotgun certificates) and FAC (firearms certificate) It's self explanatory, for a shotgun you need a shotgun certificate, which is the easier of the two to get approved. If you go for the rifle you will need the firearms certificate. As you've worked out for yourself, what is "best" is purely a matter of opinion, taking into account the type of shooting you want to do. So a rifle would be pretty useless against birds in flight, clays and bolted rabbits, but try shooting a 75 yard rabbit with a shotgun and you'll find it sim

    My approach would be to talk to as many of the neighbours as possible, and ascertain in advance whether they might be agreeable to you coming on to their land in order to track and dispatch a wounded deer. I would expect it to be reciprocal, so if they wounded a deer I'd be more than happy for them to come onto my patch to dispatch. Arranging it in advance saves a lot of worry about if's, but's and maybe's. Of course if they say "no" then you'd need to abide by it, as it removes the "good reason to believe that permission would be granted" defence! Who the deer belongs to once it's sh
