FAC Application - Advice Please
matt_hooks replied to wilbert's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Jonathan, someone will have come out and carried out a land check on your land. It might well have been checked before you used it for your application (unless you've held your certificate for many years) The Scottish system makes far more sense. We all know there is no such thing as "safe" or "unsafe" ground, so whatever criteria they apply is pretty meaningless. I managed to persuade an FEO to approve 6 acres for .243, but that took persuasion and me persuading him that I was more than capable of not pulling the trigger if the shot was unsafe. -

Applying for f.a.c and epilepsy?
matt_hooks replied to revij22's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The only reason it would be an issue is if there is a substantial risk that a seizure will leave you unable to keep the weapons secure. If you haven't fitted for 22 years then the risk of a seizure is vanishingly small. Of course it's up to them to decide, so your best bet is to fire those applications off and see what they say, but if they look to refuse on the grounds of that, then you'd have a pretty good chance at appeal. Do you still take meds? -
I have a Lightning with a Theboen ram fitted. It's been in there for over ten years, and it still works faultlessly and pushes out about 11 ft.lb, with a tiny shot to shot variation. I didn't have to make any modifications to fit it either. It's possible that newer rams are of a lower quality, or that I've just been lucky, but it certainly makes the shooting much smoother and quieter. It's a lot better than even the best quality spring, as there is no torque component to the recoil as there inevitably is with a spring.

What mind altering substances were THEY on?

Child rapes? Are you referring to the Bradford ring? If so, then you need to understand that it was a bunch of evil old men, who thought they could get away with manipulating innocent, vulnerable children to get their own way. Now as religious groups go, the Muslims have a bit of catching up to do on that front, at least their religious establishment didn't try to brush it all under the carpet, or cover it up for decades!

And "Roy Chubby Brown" as some kind of British hero? He's a racist, mysogenist, small minded twerp whose time is long since passed!

Wilf, how many of the rioters were nice white boys and girls? Most of them!

Dieseling
matt_hooks replied to Skot Ruthless Teale's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The Napier oil is supposed to be inert, non-mineral based and shouldn't cause dieselling. You must have got some other oil in there somewhere if you have smoke coming out of the barrel. -
Lucky find, lovely little rifle which should do you proud!

Buy something that is FAC from the factory. Don't touch anything that's started life as a sub 12 and been altered upwards. That said, any of the known names will do you proud. Air arms, Daystate, BSA, Theoben, the list goes on. It all depends on how much you have to spend. If you're feeling really flush, see if you can track down a Whiscombe http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sgoodwin/JW/index.html Get the , in .22, running at 31 ft.lb. Absolutely the best air gun you will ever shoot!

What method of imparting the velocity you use makes no difference to the trajectory of the pellet. -
WHAT KILLING DISTANCE GUN CHRONO AT 9.25 22 AIR RIFLE
matt_hooks replied to diggermad's topic in General Airgun Discussion
A bunny takes less than 3 ft.lb to kill it if you hit it in the right place. Chairgun pro says that the pellet drops below 3 ft.lb at 140 yards. So killing energy isn't an issue at normal air gun ranges. What's more of an issue is putting the pellet in the right place. The .22 trajectory is loopy to say the least. At 30 yards, with a heavy pellet at 9.25 ft.lb, your drop will be 18 inches or so. Your MV is only marginally above 500 fps with those numbers! If you can judge the range accurately (and it needs to be within the nearest foot or so at ranges past 30 yards at that vel -
twotwothree, that would turn it into a slug effectively, and would be totally illegal. Also wouldn't be a brilliant idea in a heavily choked gun. There are several video's of people doing it on youtube, and yes it can be very effective, but won't give more range as the way the slug deforms going down the barrel makes it very unpredictable in flight. 42gr SSG do the job just fine. 30gr of number five will kill a fox at 20 yards with no problems. It all depends on range. If you don't have a heavy enough load for the range, don't pull the trigger. Simple!
-
More energy/weight isn't going to help the pellet if there is an obstruction in the way, even if it's just a blade of grass! A single blade of grass can deflect a .308, 150gr bullet pushing out 3000 ft.lb, you reckon it won't do the same to an air rifle pellet? If the grass is too tall, either cut it or shoot from an elevated position, don't expect to be able to shoot through the grass!

Almost certainly snapped the firing pin. A gunsmith should be able to sort it reasonably cheaply.

I've put a tin through mine that I use for reloading the .243. Even though they seemed very clean before I put them in, there was plenty of lead in the water after they were done. Not noticed any difference in accuracy with them, but they're definitely pretty clean.

Birmingham?

Entirely disagree. The extra power will make no difference to accuracy at all. The extra speed might mean slightly shorter time in flight, so windage may be slightly less, but other than that the power is completely irrelevant. In fact, unless the rifle is set to FAC levels from the factory, or properly set up by an experienced gunsmith, the accuracy is likely to be adversely affected. I know people who can group under a half inch at 65 yards with a sub 12 ft.lb air rifle, so if yours is set up properly and you know what you're doing, it should do similar!
