Small Lurchers On Deer Pre Ban !!!!
shaaark replied to lurcherandterriemanchris's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Not fully with you on this one, fallow upwards then yes but most dogs pre-ban should have the job done by the time you get there, you get a few which don't get the hang of it and it turns into a screaming wrestling match but most of them seem to have a natural instinct to grab the right place and hold on, used to occasionally get a bit of damage from the front hooves if they ended up in a prone position, historically speaking of course. Yep, just saying that's how we used to go about it, in quick to help the dog. Never ran anything bigger than fallow back then and roe weren't that commo -
Small Lurchers On Deer Pre Ban !!!!

Not saying this to get anyones back up or be big headed, but 2 of the best dogs that I've seen on deer were my old dog at 26" tts, hancocks taffy was his sire to a mongrelly bred but very greyhoundy bitch, and my mates old dog 24.5 " tts whip/grey x collie/grey back to a whip/grey, no bull blood at all in either of em, good days, or rather nights then -
Small Lurchers On Deer Pre Ban !!!!

Getting in quick to help your dog was always the done thing, no matter how big or what cross/type your dog was. And as has been mentioned, saw a few whip/collie/grey types that were very good. -
depend on what you do with them, if you only point and slip then they don't get chance to use there noses, all crosses will use there hooter when given the opportunity Had a 3/4 whippet 1/4 grey about 10 years ago, would hunt like a beagle and go through any cover, no matter how thick, every time I took him out. Tried loads of ways to curb him and all failed. Lamping him was a nightmare, and if it wasn't for the fact he was so fast, I'd have gone home empty handed every session lol. By the way, he was 2 when I got him and didn't have the proper history of him, oh yeah, and he'd take d

i tried when i first started out, it yaps, it wont go in any cover, its not socialised ,its also been attacked very badly and now wont run pro-pally or put any effort in, don't you think id just have the whippet if it worked haha! its not worth a penny to any working dog man No probs, just wondered
-
Just out of interest, what's wrong with the whippet, couldn't you work that?

I've got a tall brindle bitch with a polished collar, I'll do it for free

Aye, but it still aint as good as the blue canary thread, now that really made me laugh , lol, Where was that thread at again..my memory is the shit's at time's.. Lol, not sure myself now, but if someone was to go out tonight to 'SMASH' a few early summer leverets and be foolish enough to boast about it on here I'm sure that would jog my memory lol

Cracking stamp of terrier and great pics

100% agree , I attend hardly any shows, and my reply to the other thread was simply down to the fact that the o p was calling people 'divs', which was at best immature. Was going to reply to his 'offer' with 'if you're going to call people names on here, you should be prepared to expect it back

Was At The Show Today Suppose To Be Working Dogs
shaaark replied to Thesharpeend's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
you just know he was wearing realtree everything as well iz it cuz i iz a hunta innit Did not av 1 bit of real tree on you divs abet we kill more in a week thn you's kill in a month Hey div, it's because of attitudes like this that we've got the ban -
A pull out excuse sheet, quoting "if I don't do it someone else will" "had a phone call today" "its pest control" "im bringing on a pup" preferably laminated so the summer showers wont ruin it sharp, fairplay
-
Yep, I could go to a fair few places and if you haven't got a very good dog you'd go home empty handed. Plenty of all sorts of quarry can be easier on the lamp in certain areas, but there's plenty of other areas where things aint so easy, and hares can be very fecking hard to catch

This is the point I made, I know the subject is terrier work and not greyhounds, whippets or racehorses, and the work is different, but the principles and breeding ethics etc are much the same.
-
Pot luck, the amount of not so good pups out of every litter, no matter how good the parents, is, to my mind, enough proof that worker to worker has no real advantage over litters that aren't bred from worker to worker. Hare coursing whippet champions have been bred from dogs that have never seen a hare in their lives, and racing greyhounds and horses follow a similar patern. As long as they've got the right bloodline they'll be bred from. And in all livestock breeding, breed enough and you'll get some good ones. Edited to add, I just realised I'm in the terrier section! lol, but you get my

Said it before, never get tired of seeing this bitch

A mate of mine had a cairn x russell bitch years ago, bred from his dad's russell to a neighbours cairn bitch, looked practically pure cairn. Only about 11", brilliant rabbiting/ferreting dog and would work the thickest bramble/cover you could imagine, good on rats too.

Good point I wasn't very specific. I really would enjoy lamping over farmland/grassland. and be able to take the dog for walks over roughish ground when I hike, dad used to take me lamping when I was younger with our old lurcher and I loved it, but I'm not looking for a hunting machine. as I would enjoy being able to take it with me when I travel, snuggle on the sofa, and enough brains that I can train the difference between going after bunnies, but not chickens/ducks cats etc. I loved the traits of a collie as the brains are there, but I want a fast dog so had been considering lurcher

Saluki Men / Bringing On Pups / Summer Hares
shaaark replied to Ideation's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Aye, and don't you dare put a beam on one! lol -
Could be worse, I'm just glad that I don't take ANYTHING in life as seious as I used to. A couple very serious accidents makes you reappraise the priorities in life, and having a laugh on here helps to stave off the boredom. Anyway, you keep salukis don't you, I would imagine they'd make a very useful mousehound given their agility lol Aye? Fair play - but it could also get you to thinking that life's far too short and precious to be reading shite like this....... True
-
Beeswax should be a winner, coming from striped/brindle creatures

Brindle collars are faster, FACT!! I knew it ! My dog has a tartan collar - no wonder he doesn't catch anything. Yeah but he's very agile, so still ok for the mice! True - he smashes mice. Sometimes 2 or 3 a night I knew it, you can't beat an agile dog for 'SMASHING' mice. And 2 or 3 a night, the dog's obviously a top class 'mousehound'! , lmao
