  1. That's a very nice dog mate, and some cracking pics in your album. How tall etc is he and do you know what else besides whippet is in him? Looks very much like our bitch, only smaller, collie/grey x deer/grey, especially the pics of him as a youngster. Anyway, whatever's in him he's a cracker
  2. Does anyone think that knowing the exact breeding of their dogs gives them a bias or certain expectation as to how their dogs should perform, and the type of quarry they should be capable of taking due to the breeding, eg bull x- fox, sal x-hare etc, and are then disappointed when the dog doesn't perform as expected because of the breeding? I've been wondering this for a while, as it seems to me that most people are just as happy with a lurcher x lurcher of 'pedigree unknown' and don't really care about exact percentages of breeding.
  3. but could it catch a hare i understand the wild pig thing but the reality is, the chances of one coming face to face with a wild pig over here is greater than winning the lottery. ive nothing agains the breed, infact any breed just its usefullness in creating a lurcher and the claims made Beddy/whippet x ridgeback sounds just the job for ALL BRITISH quarry, oh yeah, PRE BAN!
  4. Well it'd have to be brindle, they're faster, 'smash' mice during the day then FACT!!!
  5. legitimate pest control, like it or not, at least its controlled and regulated and done in season. personally im against it but if hares are around in those numbers and with the asbence of any other control method what would you do Leaving pest control, politics and shooting aside, personally I'd have them netted to replenish areas where they've become scarce
  6. Said this a couple of times before, but the fact that many people call it 'sport' is one of the main reasons it was banned. Similarly 'testing' your dog, or whatever you want to call it, says to all those opposed to hunting of any sort, that people who hunt with dogs are just out to terrify and persecute wildlife for a laugh. I think we wouldn't be in the situation we are now in if people didn't use the word 'sport'. It's HUNTING, and most people are more sympathetic about hunting to provide food for family etc, than they are about hunting for sport/fun. I know there's more to it political
  7. Nice dogs mate, are they from same litter, they look very similar type?
  8. Well, this thread certainly cheered my morning up lol. Am thinking of getting a few birds myself, but as you say pete, this genetics caper is WAY too much for me. A couple of variegated types of different colours I'm thinking will do me
  9. Seen a few around over the years, my mate's sister had a cracking bitch about 12 years ago, marked exactly like a doberman. They both got into the showing side of things and had the bitch spayed cos B & T isn't desirable in staffs, f**k knows why! The bitch was a belter, type, conformation etc and the best feet I've seen on any staff, before or since.
  10. Havn't had a whippet for years, but everytime I see this bitch I want another one lol. Cracking bitch, fairplay mate
  11. No f****r called Saluki's more than me lol..the old skeletons with dusters threw over them :-) but now I've got two of them,if they ain't no good they will make good draught excluders as they are big long b*****ds...I never bought these two Saluki x pups because of any "hype" my dogs only have myself to keep happy..what others think of them I really don't give a f**k..they ain't world beaters but they do for me..as for these pups well if they don't make any good our lass loves the darn things and they wont be going anywhere so I'll be paddling about with the c**ts until I'm in my 60's :-(
  12. Collie/bull/grey x deer/grey, and it looks like it's still fairly young/puppyish, so would expect it to be carrying a bit of weight and not be work fit
  13. i never said she isnt working yet. just held back on some stuff. cos i dont want to ruin her. i also said that her character wouldnt supprise me if she took well to fox work, but im not really intrestedWhether your intrested or not shouldn't stop you testing a great big dog like that 1 your pictured with.Ill be honest I don't overly like killing something that you chuck in a ditch ( I even looked up how to use fox fur! Lol ) but every 1 see my bitch will be expected to race it and deal with it. ( after being shot at )I think a lot of the people on this thread have car stickers on there back wi
  14. Deerhound crosses, the mix is the most important part, hold their own in any company,on any chosen quarry.I prefer the addition of Border collie. In my experience, based on over 30 years graft with the breed,i would own no other type lurcher.Ive seen outstanding lurchers of various breeding, yet the Deerhound types, bred right, with the collie influence in my case, entered right and tested right, have few equals.Ive seen many quality lurchers make duffers because of the kennel they live in,its the same with any lurcher,if its bred from grafters a good kennel will get graft out of the mutt. You've jus

  17. Well, to me taking fox isn't really lurcherwork, rabbit, hare and deer is. I've seen plenty, and owned a couple, of deerhound x's that were very good at taking ALL of the quarry I mentioned very regularly. Best fox dog, any x, I've personally seen was my mates 1st x deer/grey in the late 80's early 90's, job over in seconds, no fuss. Perhaps deerhounds were bred with more emphasis on work up until recent years? Same dog took everything single handed on the lamp, and made it look effortless more often than not. Not a bad hare dog in the day either. People can bleat on about bull x's all they wa
  18. In that pic he does look like he could have a tad of bull in it, more than bedington anyway. But I know feck all, as I was told by someone on here a few months ago
  19. Sounds to me he is on the right track to ruining it. I've never read such a catalogue of basic errors. Running rabbits near tracks, electric fences, shining torch over fences into fields!!!!! Forget the seasons nearly ended mate, that don't count for pups. Your on a farm for fucksake, you have the best opportunity. Wait till the young rabbits are 3/4 grown in a month or 2, get the dog a slip lead and get yourself a lamp. Pick rabbits that you'd practically catch, middle of the field type, they will sit out there if you don't harass them. Walk the dog right upto them or as close as possible.

  21. hes 30 inches and solid with a temper if called for,I cant wait for next season either to see him run,I'll have a lot of good days on the coast with that bunch.lolThat's a nice size of dog, what line/lines is he from if you don't mind me asking?origionally way back, doxhope but a lot of local stuff thats proved to be worthy of breeding to.he had a stunner of a bitch a few years back and she wasnt up to scratch,he put her to sleep even though he was offered a nice sum of money for her.He knew the buyer only wanted to breed litters from her so wouldnt sell.he keeps a good line of dogs but rarely
  22. Tell me of a breed of dog more powerful pound for pound than a greyhound then. All mastiff types, bull types, shepherd types, deerhounds..... Dnt get me wrong we need grey blood for there pace but I wouldnt add grey for power ffs where do you think anything gets it's speed from be it a boat, car or a dog, power no power no speed, simples
  23. Go on, just say it, you've no idea . Most lurcher pups of mixed breeding look pretty much the same to me, unless they're a 1st x or definite type I went to see a bullx litter, but they all looked like whippets because of their poor heads , lol its got me creased Why would any right thinking individual want a running dog with a huge head? The poor c**t would be snagging it's front paws on it's chin every time it tried to get a bit of a gallop going!
