  1. Consider this - dog enters set, finds fox, holds it, we dig a big hole take dog out and shoot fox in head with 410. - we raise or buy lots of birds, release them in wood and then on decided days drive them over men standing with shot guns. We shoot hundreds, most guns take a brace and the rest go to a game dealer (and in the past when there was no market i've seen them dumped). - I sit on bank with a worm on a hook in the river, fish comes along and has a feed and suddenly finds it self caught up and i pull it in and bash its head in with a stick. How are any of these any more
  2. How old is he? If he's going through hedges and he's only just entered your onto a winner! atb Jai.
  3. Ok so me and another member from here recently adopted 4 new ferrets. Two jills and two hobs, I have introduced the two jills with mine and they are happily settled in and look like they will be good workers . . . in particular a greyhound type albino jill that is probably one of the fastest ferrets i have ever seen. There were also two hobs. Now these two brothers are HUGE and i dont mean just big by hob ferret standards i mean f*cking huge, They would give my jack russel a fright and have a striking resemblance to two polecat colored otters. No joke , it's ridiculous. They are tame as he
  4. Seen good ferrets of every type and also ad ferrets of every type. Like above i have different colored ferrets from the same litter . . . . . ultimately if from working lines it comes down to individual ferret but more importantly the ferreter. Many many bad ferrets would have been good ferrets in better hands. jmo. atb Jai.
  5. By fighting do you mean he is grabbing her by the neck and pulling her about the cage. . . . because if so they aint fighting
  6. Why not ask this in the Gundog section. A spaniel is primarily a gun dog used to scent, flush and then retrieve shot game. All of the Spaniel training we do is geared at stopping them chasing. As soon as the rabbits is pushed out of cover and runs we want the dog to hit the deck or be still until the shot is fired and the rabbit knocked over, the spaniel then heads of and find the shot game returning it to hand. Very rarely they will nail a rabbit in cover but we try to discourage this as it can make them hard mouthed - damaging game. atb Jai.
  7. They also have problems fitting down the holes.
  8. Me and trisha (posted above and pm sent) are in South Wales but would maybe take a drive up if your needin help? How long you still hitting the farms for? atb Jai.
  9. Slightly off topic but for me a good terrier is one that has a great nose, hunts through cover like a hound, has a good voice which it only uses when pushing its quarry through deep cover (handy for tracking it), is rock steady with livestock, knows how to sit still and keep quiet when told to and no1 marks so good you would put your house on it. But then i hunt rabbits. atb Jai. edited to add : It's also got to be small and well built.
  10. Yer this has been done to death, its an evolution of ferreting. However some people don't and do perfectly well. It's like a lot of things in life, each to their own, but most people who have come into contact with locators soon get one.
  11. I use a finder (luckily haven't had a dig all season) but my mate doesnt and his hob just kills and moves on. If he sticks you just whistle down the hole and call 'sam' and he comes out. On sunday he was down longer than usual though, he must have found a litter of kits and everyone got a bit paniced, at that point im sure everyone was thinking . . . an extra collar might be a good investment. atb Jai.
  12. Most ferrets when introduced will have a tumble around but your hob should take nicely to having a couple of jills to run with, they really are social animals and are great to watch together and seem to benefit from it. Also the jills do take care of the hobs a bit, making the nest etc. atb Jai.
  13. Great days sport - went out today with just my mates terrier, left the lurcher at home. The terrier is a one dog pack of hounds and great to watch working the cover. Also handy if you have a ferret and few nets with you! atb Jai.
  14. Also in answer to 1) Ferreting in summer means endless lay ups as your ferret comes across litters of young and kills them in the nest and unless doing true pest control where land will be lost if the rabbits are not killed most ferreters stop during the summer as it can be a proper pain in the arse, feels a bit wrong and will ensure less sport come winter. atb Jai.
  15. Fly Fishing, Ferret Breeding, Dog Training and a bit of rabbit control where its needed for pest control.
  16. Went out wed and had one about 6 weeks old, but none with young. Went out today and did some of the lower slopes and a canal bank. Hob was finding them right, left and centre and he killed a few so it looks like its almost over for us.
  17. As Chalk Warren correctly points out - the ferreting season must now be judged on a local level. No longer can we ferret 'every month with an R'. If you wanted to avoid young you would need to confine your ferreting oct-jan. Obviously if you were in the Scottish Highlands you would get a longer 'young free' season than those down south. Even in one area here - we get a lot more young earlier in some spots which are lower or have a more gentle climate, and so have an extra month to do the top slopes. atb jai.
  18. This is the 500th post announcing young. Yes - they breed like rabbits! Had a young one fire through the net the other day and it would have been born during a 2 week period where there was about a foot or more of snow on the ground . . . . . go figure. Taken 20 + in the last couple of days and only 1 or 2 had young in them. However twice today the hob went in and came back out covered in blood - i think one may have been a grown rabbit as there was a bit of bumping before, but the second i'm pretty sure was a nest full of young. It's not pleasant and i'll be stopping some permissions now. Oth
  19. never heard anything so fecking stupid in all my life with regard to a ferret but he is depresed lol anyway ive been online to a company in america and have orderd a blow up jill ferret for him they come highly recomended it shud be here by the start of the week
  20. Those really are nice looking pups - looking forward to seeing some pics of them grown and their pups
  21. A couple of weeks ago i put a post up here following a days ferreting at a new permission where i said that i had decided (after much thought) to look for a ferreting partner as my Dad works away a lot these days and is not always up for a full day out when he is here. I was skeptical about finding one that i would be comfortable taking on my permissions and someone that i could spend enjoyable days with - we all have a slightly different way of doing things and its hard to find someone you click with. Anyway - i put the post up and had plenty of repys, some were clearly just wanting more
