  1. You hit the nail on the head mate. Yes, people still do it but now that smokers are readily available they are a far better alternative to getting your ferrets knocked about for something you can't eat. I hate rats. In fact i would go so far as to say its a borderline phobia. Whenever they are near i can be found standing VERY near my jrt. atb jai.
  2. Yes matey - get a map / google earth - have a look at the lay out of all the farms etc locally and just go one to another. I been working out from my house for ages now and once you get a few the neighbours are easier - so far i've got permission for all the land around me as far as i could walk in a day or so! atb Jai.
  3. Most important thing is that they are well handled and used to you picking them up. Find a nice smallish set with only a couple of holes and fresh activity. Do everything slowly and methodically and all should be ok. Most ferrets are naturally inquisitive and will head down the hole to have a look see and if these two have bolted a few already then they will probs smell rabbit and head straight down. If they dont want to go down - dont force them - there may be nothing at home so try another set. Also do not snatch them up when they come to the mouth of the hole, call them out and pick the
  4. Lucky - i hate mink and the thought of losing a ferret to one makes me cold - i might trap that stream for a while before i ferret it. Out of interest - what do you think it weighed?

  6. No worries - there was a good one recently. As for ratting strains - any ferret will do as long as its small and hard as nails. Be warned that most will give up after 1 season - wouldn't you?
  7. O yer just wanted to say "so grabbed it and pulled it out" - you got bigger balls than me!
  8. Thats very random - i was talking about this with my Dad last night - we have a permission where there is a long stream bed full of sets but also we have been told full of mink (they have decimated the farms chickens) - we were debating the chance / risk of ferrets coming into contact with a mink underground and how likely we were o lose a ferret! What kind of ground were you ferreting? How did the ferret fair? was it a rabbit hole or mink hole? atb jai. p.s - good on your dog - thats a huge mink!
  9. Read the article by G Waters thats pinned - should give you a pretty good run through. atb Jai.
  10. There are a lot of good posts on here - type ferreting/rats into the search bar!
  11. People ,some of them on here ,who say" we don't do any harm the farmer doesn't even know we have been poaching his ground",conveniently choose to forget that in most cases someone has managed to win hard earned permission on it,and by doing it clandestinely they are shitting all over that guy,it might be one of the fella's you have a crack with on here.Either way it's a shitty thing to do imo. Another reason why legitimate hunters are getting pulled at night ,is because of those who haven't got permission. Slowly ,but surely the doors are closing ,but some won't see the wood for the trees.
  12. 1 - A fresh meat diet is best, mine get that supplemented with cat food, ferret biscuits and egg. 2- About 60 quid. 3- Not sure but i'd say hob. Well done for deciding to find out about them before getting them - if i was you i would read up lots and lots and get a pair of jill kits in spring. atb jai.
  13. ebay - 141 quid / free delivery! Sorted! Looking forward to its arrival - hopefully in time for this weekend!
  14. Hey All, Decided it's finally time to upgrade to the MK3! Any suggestions on wheres the best/cheapest/quickest place to order one from? Cheers! Jai.
  15. Ask your vet! You have to make it up differently i think cos they are a lot smaller.
  16. Thats a fair price for the hob. Do you have any pics of the jills? Well handled? I'm really needing a cage mate for my jill at the moment. Edited to add - lots and lots of work on offer as well - few times a week!
  17. Aye get a locater! Also do you feed them before? If not they are lable tohave a wee feed and then maybe a snooze. Muzzels are a bigno no for the above reason and also if they get lost they will stare to death.
  18. I usually just give them the time it takes me todo another set and then come back.
  19. Don't think it makes any difference apart from if you work a hob and jill together then you gotta seperate them when the jill is in season. I personally prefer jills a they seem to be much less likely to kill in.
  20. Its never a good idea to ferret a rabbit thats just slipped the nets an gone down another hole - they are very very unlikely to bolt as they know whats above ground an will usually take their chances with the ferret.
  21. What a tit if its so!Post the pics! But i am in real need of another well handled ferret at the moent if anyone knows of one. It's gaurenteed A LOT of work, and my jill is on her own at the moment and none to hapy
