  1. A couple of weeks ago i put a post up here following a days ferreting at a new permission where i said that i had decided (after much thought) to look for a ferreting partner as my Dad works away a lot these days and is not always up for a full day out when he is here. I was skeptical about finding one that i would be comfortable taking on my permissions and someone that i could spend enjoyable days with - we all have a slightly different way of doing things and its hard to find someone you click with. Anyway - i put the post up and had plenty of repys, some were clearly just wanting more
  2. If your going to get rid of her dont just dump her on a rescue - they have enough as it is. Get her a nice pet home. atb Jai.
  3. Yer i thought i was right! It's strange cos they are a really good vet usually - been taking all the dogs there for years as well as other ferrets, sheep and god knows what else over the years. Was a new boy tho.
  4. OK, so my little jill has started to come into season. I decided i wasn't going to breed from her this year and so would get her the jab. I called the vet and they said that the jab also has it's risks and that they couldn't do it anyway because she had come into season and the jab must be given before they come in. Is this true? SO it looks like i need to find a vasectomiesed hob to run with her or she will stay in season and i worry for her health. Anyone got one is south wales area? Any help much appreciated! atb Jai.
  5. As said before - start at the top and if using more than one ferret - top and edges of the set.
  6. Alright vid, but is all the jumping about really needed? They could just move about quickly and quietly and get the job done well rather than acting like last action hero. Reminds me of little boys in the park doing slide tackles to impress the girls . . . .
  7. Just my opinion but I personally would not breed to supply such a market. What the idiots will and won't buy shouldn't be your concern, just breed your own line and improve it whilst they're all fecking about with trivial things like colour I agree - ferrets should be bred purely on working instinct. If idiots start breeding for color we will end up with show bred strains and the working potential will be reduced. In America folk have purposefully picked color and docileness over working ability and have (purposefully) bred a pretty but useless ferret. I would be extremely sceptical o
  8. Went out today, was chucking down with icy rain. Took 8, with only one kill underground and the ferret came back up when called anyway. Not the fastest of bolters and they tried to give the ferrets the run around. Didn't work tho. atb Jai.
  9. We'll end up like the yanks - breeding out working ability in favour of pretty colors.
  10. Aye mate, we know though hope you catch them! jai.
  11. Yep - all colors the same - we're an equal opportunities employer! Atb Jai.
  12. If the land is near where you live or work its always worth swinging past for a look through the field glasses, especially if the weather is decent, you never know what you might see. atb Jai.
  13. Folk used to do this when planning to rough shoot a piece of land the next day. They would go round the day or so before and chuck paraffin soaked rags down the holes. The idea was that when they came to rough shoot it next day there would be more rabbits sitting out above ground. atb Jai.
  14. B*stards, i live in fear of just that same thing. Could be someone you know? Hope you catch them, Jai.
  15. Some do just play a little harder than others. My jill is good as gold and never drawn blood but when she gets in a funny mood she runs about the house chattering and jumping on everything, including my feet. She grabs my sock in her teeth and rags it like a terrier! The one you have just sounds like shes still a bit unsure of what the deal is. If you have a place thats not too big and secure, get her out, sit on the floor and place a bit of pipe, your wellie, her box or anything to play with next to you, let her have a run about and explore and just get used to you being about. Talk to he
  16. Put it in - if they feed it's good. Jai.
  17. Best way to learn - getting stuck in. You got some good ferreting partners there! If its hard could be a tumor or hernia. atb Jai.
  18. You and your dogs did bloody well. How many folk go off on their own for their first dig with the dogs, the dogs do the job well, you find a fox in the first place and then manage to dig to it. And your dogs certainly dont lack prey drive do they? And you still got a fox to go find next weekend. good job! atb jai. But yer - get a lurcher
  19. A dog that has lots of prey drive and so uses its brains to put the game in the bag. Prey drive isnt just about running really fast and not letting anything get in the way. Prey drive is surely about doing what it takes to catch and if there is an easier way of doing it, dog should take that option and also know when its just not going to happen. No point wasting energy on pointless runs. Down to the owner to know whats good to run and when to slip. jmo. atb jai.
  20. I wonder how much the answer to this question sums up the person. Maybe someone who wants all 'prey drive', a great desire to catch and kill and few brains is someone who does not respect intelligence but only desire to kill. Prey drive is important, but who wants a stupid dog? Their just a pain in the arse!. atb Jai.
