  1. What do you lot pay to insure your working dogs and does it REALLY cover you?
  2. So she found a dog and just kept it, made no attempt to see if anyone was missing it? Good on her for taking it in though and looking after it.
  3. i personally wait till 12 months to do proper hard excercising and like to wait to start dogs working (i go by the rule wait a few extra months and gain a couple extra years which was said to me by a very wise dog man). I know you have to wait till 18 months with greatdanes to let them have a good run about but they are massive in comparison. general mooching, playing and general clarting about shouldnt do your pup any harm in my opinion as the muscles and tendons have to experience some sort of strain to develope. Hope this helps I know what your saying and agree in many senses. . . .
  4. Nice history lesson but not strictly true. The first recoded use of the term 'celt' is from 517 BC. Also the notion that 'most britons had become romanized' due to the prescence of roman invaders/settlers is also a fantasy. The lives of most of the average rural dwelling populace would have changed little, during and after roman reign. But yer, nice to see someone interested in history. I'd also seriously contend the idea that half the world thinks we own the world and want to be like us. These days we are a bit of a joke, or just down right hated.
  5. Its a good idea until something gets up the otherside of the bike and dog cuts across your path. How tall is your beddy/whip? My pure whip weighs in about the same 36-37 lbs.
  6. You really go out and hunt foxes with just spaniels? Just interested, not knocking it.
  7. Any more info on the dog in the pic? Breeding etc? How heigh is she and what does she weigh? A good whippet is very good. Mine hunts like a beagle, has balls like house bricks and will find game if its there, every time, no matter the cover its in.
  8. Give them a sample of dogs piss, the last thing they will worry about is the temp of the sample.
  9. summers on the way. OF COURSE..........i almost forgot. . . . they must be getting themselves and their dogs ready for the shows. Roids
  10. Whats with bellends and steroids this week?
  11. I can see the headlines now. . . . .36 men with airguns caught on public land
  12. Haha looks A LOT like the land we hunt
  13. Doesn't matter if its a gun or a dog, some folk are just bell ends, you could tell a million tales of the disappointing actions of both groups. This guy sounds like kind that lives in town and likes to go out and blast some stuff before scurrying home in his big 4x4, just as bad as the c**ts who come out from the town cos they like to smash some stuff before scurrying home in their slightly smaller 4x4.
  14. Make something illegal, stick it all over the papers/t.v, let it involve going out at night at 'smashing' shit. . . . . . . and you will ALWAYS get legions of people taking it up for all the wrong reasons! To be fair i now kind of hope the ban stays in place, cos it scares me to think what the idiots would do if they thought they had free reign.
  15. i dont understand the listen bit what do you mean exactly, just a question hehe i dont know if you are taking the piss or not but i shall answer anyway . Say i heard somthing moving about in the hedge/wood etc etc i would say "Listen" and she will prick up her ears and listen to try and hear were it is coming from me take the piss never if movement in the hedgerow dog will hear it long before you do weather your telling it to listen or not lol And will probably smell it long before its within hearing! Mind you our dogs use their ears in the bracken! The rabbits try to snea
  16. ??? meaning people can think ferreting is over come march but always worth a try, you may be risking the odd dig. like you say up your way they are onto second litters, down here the odd ones are showing. dont know till you give it a go Very true mate, although if you live in the countryside you see the signs and know roughly when your gonna get f****d. I would kill for a days ferreting, but its just a clusterfuck now, way too many hoppers everywhere. Good luck to you carrying on for another week or two, but i dont think you will get long looking outside!
  17. You SURE you are not related to Whin? Who says no one has a terrier, there are shit loads owned by folk on here.
  18. My whippets got a nose like a bloodhound, no joke. Kept spaniels for years, and even in comparison to them he is impressive. He marks various quarry like a pro. Most of the hunting i do is daytime, hunting up cover, woodland, scrub, mountainside etc for mixed quarry. Running dog expected to find and catch the quarry, and scent and sound are often as important or more important than sight.
  19. Your lucky being up there mate, we are onto our second generation of young already from this year (i.e the first lot of kits are now breeding themselves). Little ones literally everywhere, above and below ground, ferretings a total waste of time.
  20. When you say 'everybody', do you mean, you, your mum and your imaginary friend?
  21. They hide them underground. But i'm sure someone will help you (although you may have to do the chopping up!)
  22. This year i have decided to breed my best and oldest jill, in order to keep back a kit or two myself to preserve the line, and to give a couple of new ferreters a decent first team. Thing is i have had her jabbed in the past to take her out of season. Anyone ever had any problems breeding from a jill thats been having the jab? Odd question i know, but this jill is worth more to me than. . . . . .well most things. . . . . but i'd also be gutted if i could not continue the line.
  23. I don't mean to be a dick, but i'm guessing you are taking that view because you CAN pay for any problems your dog has. I know where you are coming from, but for many people, the ridiculous profiteering of the veterinary profession means that if they did not RELY on the PDSA, then they would forever be barred from having a dog or accept the fact that they cannot give it the treatment they require. Working dogs are part of a working class culture, but these days if you didnt have the PDSA, properly cared for dogs would become for the rich only. That's just a thought, and i'm not saying t
  24. Could get the jill done. But i'd go for a dividing cage and one vac'd, or one vac'd and swap the other for a jill.
