I have seen some good lurchers act as gun dogs on informal shooting days :The odd one,was inclined too chase though. However ,they dont really FIT IN in todays shoot, and therefore will never be given the chance to prove themselves. There is also a reason that folk spend a lot of time creating/breeding purpose bred dogs over a long long time, like has been said a good lurcher will do a gundogs job better than a good gundog will do a lurcher, but the best 'gundog lurcher' would get hammered into the ground by the best gundogs. Cos at the end of the day gundogs aint those things you see

Agree with the cheap mesh and staples. I had to replace most of his product with decent material. Yup And it was a totally unnecessary piece of material and poor design that the ferret tore to pieces and impaled herself on. I also think the wood aint that great either

Given your criteria i would say that the exact breed/x of dog isn't that important, there are a large range of first and 3/4 crosses that would do what you want, and an indefinite number of combinations. What is more important is finding a liter bred out of two dogs that you quite like the look/feel/temperament of and that are doing to a high standard the job you require your pup to do in the future, and that has been well reared.

All right mate, i'd still suggest you spend the next month at least going for a walk with as many folk off here and anywhere else that you can and see some dogs in the flesh and see what takes your fancy, it's also a good way to meet folk into dogs and find out about what pups might be about in the future.

'Get on him cass, get on him cass, get on him, go on girl' has a nice ring, better than 'Get on him peggy, get on him peggy, get on him, go on girl"

Definately no collie mate lol,I do alot of ferreting as you know mate, hope shes not a shiverer I wasn't suggesting she was mate, but i bet in the future you will get folk asking if she is a pup out your other dog! In my opinion they make ideal ferreting dogs, and with the work take to the game very well, their small size, good initial pace and great nose means that they are very handy about the holes. Natural markers, mine doesn't shiver, has exceptional prey drive. My one complaint against the breed is they can be moany little b*****ds They have great personalities as well. Als

Looking out of her - she could be out your other dog mate - don't you think?

Thats the most collie'ish whippet i've ever seen. But then mine did look like a staff as a pup Looks lovely mate, will be interested to see her grown, i do love a good whip (they are massively underestimated i think).

I think they have always been popular in certain areas amongst certain folk, but the advent of the internet, the hunting ban and killing big stuff with lurchers becoming 'cool' has exploded their popularity amongst the idiots.

no mate had it for xmas dinner atb ks me and my mates aint part of the kill and leave brigade atb ks Just that to lift the big stags you need a tractor with a front loader or the equivalent, you certainly aint dragging it back to the road and fitting it in your disco! So how did you move the beast and get him back? in a ruck sack I suppose you could have butchered him in the field, minced the meat, and stuffed that in, but even that would take a good few wheel barrows!
-
My advice would be to do a lot more thinking and a lot more planning and go see a lot more dogs work/run before you jump into buying a pup that could be with you for the next ten years plus.

We only get the two options? So it's everything versus the bull x? And i think they are pretty 'old skool' anyhow, been about for decades!

Light sussex mate - look nice, good layers.

Round and round it goes. Have we established that yes reds can be taken with dogs, the smaller ones with one very good dog and the bigger with two. Obviously there aint THAT many great dogs about and less cases of the same person/people running two such dogs - hence the very small number of folk doing it? They vary in size so where some pairs of dogs would do one happily - another might blast them away. There's also the day/lamp difference, the second being a world easier. If there is something that is seen as a challenge then usually there are folk who will dedicate their time to overcoming i

Funny when my order took weeks, and weeks and weeks to come it was cos their factory had 'burnt down'. Boy has some bad luck, don't he ANd i genuinely believe his stuff is pretty shoddily made - some of you may remember my post about the ferret who ripped her face open on his box? He had squares of cheap mesh stapled over the inside of the breathing holes (despite the holes being as thick as my thumb, so no chance of escape).

Security lights, silenced shotgun, shovel. They where never there Who's going to argue?

Was very big at one point when we had a fur trade. Round the 70's fur went up and foxes became prime targets and folk made cash. Then fur was uncool and now its just left to rot in a ditch.

I collect dead rabbits. . .

What he said - its more natural and with the damn jab they dont know what the f**k is happening to their bodies.. ANd the fact that i'd rather see my girls getting some lovin rather than inject them with delvosteron which hurts like a f****r and makes them jump across the room.

It's that time of year again and i didnt get the hob vac'd in time! So is there anyone out there who has a healthy vac hob, that could come and take our ladies out of season. Between my mate (Johnnyboy68) and me we have something like 10 jills, and hate the jab for them. South Wales area would be ideal. Cheers. Jai. We'd be happy to pay something for the service.
