  1. Lovely looking pups matey! Are you local by any chance? P.M if you like!
  2. So first off, I don't want to get any ones back up, this is not a dig! I have seen a lot of posts of late, asking about different lurcher x's, small lurchers, lurchers for ferreting, bushing dogs, lurchers with a decent nose etc. Seems like 90% of the time, the majority of folk say "Get a beddy x whippet". Now, I know that on here there are a few folk that have them, and have kept a few, and seem to really like them. But from what I can see a lot of those suggesting the x, and bigging it up, don't run one, and are just suggesting it, based upon what they have seen said on here. The
  3. I have recently been seeing a fair number of 'rescue' lurchers, in the vets and various shelters etc. Some have been a wreck, but there have been a few that have looked very handy, fit enough, and been well mannered and responsive, clearly having undergone training, and what looks like 'in the field' training. I wonder why they are there? Some are probably just escapees, stolen dogs dumped etc. I often find a good (basic) test to see if its been worked is to hiss as you walk past the kennel lol. Some of them are up on their feet and ready to go, others dont bat an eyelid lol. Obviously tha
  4. Money says that the owners of this litter, bought the "eu x mink". . . . . honest guv! of someone for a 'special price'. "
  5. I'm not suggesting that any action can be or is taken against BOP's. However, look at a small shoot. Say they release 3500 birds ish. And they stick them in six pens, at about 600 birds a pen. The keeper feeds the pens twice a day. And picks up only two dead poults from each pen, on each feed, that have been killed by BOPs (and that's a conservative estimate). So over the first say six weeks, he will pick up over 1000 birds. Almost a third of what has been released, and something like £3500-£4000 worth of poults (not including the price of any feed they have consumed). So i
  6. It's nice to see that they have finally granted someone a license. But they are like rocking horse shit. Chances of getting the license are next to none!
  7. I think the only argument can be that in areas where there are not that many hares, you will kill off the population far quicker on the lamp then in the day, but no where near as quickly as the lads with guns. Animals like the hare are f****d anyway, so many people hunting them, in so many ways, day and night, summer and winter, combined with the change in agriculture and climate, and increase in certain types of predators. I don't have a problem with folk doing them day or night, makes no odds, as both can be done in a respectful and not respectful manner in my eyes. But going out for
  8. During foot and mouth. Exactly that was done (for obvious reasons). The Buzzard population crashed and there were dead buzzards all over the shop.
  9. For us, a good nose is essential. I have been absolutely amazed that the whippet has one of the best noses I have ever seen for both air and ground scent. Surprised me for a pure sight hound?

  11. I accept what you are saying to a point mate. I come from a spaniel family, and have seen some very very top spaniels work. Some of the best. But when I was looking for a dog to do the sort of flushing job I require, I wanted something that would follow scent well, work cover well, would make noise on a scent, would get stuck in if needed (and so chase), and would not go to ground. Which for me, ruled out a spaniel, I could never stand to look at one that yipped, yapped, chased or was hard mouthed. And it ruled out a terrier, due to the underground issue. So i went for a sp

  13. Sorry to hear that Mal. I just finished eating sausage, mash, peas and gravy with my nan. The last surviving grand parent I have.
  14. Thing is Wilf - technically, bushing out game, is the only legal way you can use one or two dogs to work fox/hare/deer. I accept that any old dog can run around yapping and flush bunnys about the place. But a lot of folk are now breeding specialised x breeds for the job, who really do excell. I have a little hound x here, and plan on adding a couple more of a similar type. But i'm not really a hound man, it doesnt really fit with the terrier section, so I chuck stuff in the lurcher section at the moment.
  15. Noisy terrier, silenced .410 and some pigs?
  16. Yep!!!! Good luck with that one Lab when i was away a pair killed 150+ poults in one night, absolutely smashed 'em...the b*****ds soon flew away though.......... I thought Buzzards were more scavengers than active hunters? Suppose if they're hungry, just never seen one on the hunt before 150 in one night seems pretty steep? Buzzards 100% hunt and kill pheasants, mainly poults, but will also hit adult birds, only they cannot carry them off. I see it pretty much every day when we have poults here. I even watch them bring their young to the pens to teach them how to d

  18. If we had the same number of Gos as we had buzzards we would have NO pheasants left mate. The buzzards are bad enough, but the Gos are just so fecking efficient at it, a proper predator. The b*****ds just smash them all over the place.
  19. Here is a question - Has there EVER been a case in the media, where a dog that was owned by someone who wasn't a moron, badly hurt or killed someone???
  20. Goshawks . . . . . lucky lucky you! They make the buzzards look pheasant friendly!
  21. I'd disagree with both mate, I keep four hobs together all year round, and jills can be run with a vac hob, so stops them needing to be bred. I keep a mix of jills and hobs, both because it provides me with different ferrets for different situations and because I just like having both about the place.
  22. One thing I have found really good in all kinds of care situations is the hills s/d critical care food, it comes in a tin, like a pate, which is really easily palatable, but can also easily be mixed wiith water and syringed into animals.
  23. Anyone who says or thinks that it's all of one or all of the other. . . . . . .needs to have a think.
  24. In a small run, they might be ok, but they must be pretty bored! I have my lot split between two runs at the moment. I have a half dozen jills, and currently a vac hob, in a 10 x4 x4 run. and they are ok, but I do feel its a little cramped, and would like to extend it. I have 4 hobs in a 6 x 4 x 3 run.
