Think Arthur's bitch pups throw around 23inch give or take. I've got a bedlington/whippet x collie/greyhound x whippet that's 20 inch to the shoulder. I've also got a working springer x lurcher ( he said it was a greyhound sire), but it definitely had a bit of something else in it. She's 7 months old and around 20 inch at the moment, I got her as I wanted a dog that would hunt up well. I personally would have the springer whippet as a mooching dog not a hedgerow catch dog, it would do it, but would be hunt up orientated, and would benefit with more speed off the mark.

Think you'd go far wrong with another collie/greyhound x whippet. I'd go 3/4 whippet bedlington over half bedlington. Whippets are cracking little hedgerow dogs, but if I was to only add one more to my team I'd go for a lurcher around 23 inch mark. I'm always abit synical about some of the bedlington whippet coats that tend to hold water, although there not all like this a lot are. I personally like the bitch lurcher pups that Arthur at David hancocks is producing.

I'd get something that's like shit off a shovel over first 30 yard. Think it would be a cracking little hedgerow dog, but not my overall choice as a catch dog working to your cocker. If your wanting terrier in the mix I'd go 3/4 runner 1/4 terrier or a pure whippet. Plenty of dogs will do what you want, it really is a personal preference. Too much terrier in the mix might cause it to spend a lot of time working in the hedgerow for its own benefit rather than waiting on your cocker to flush them. Are you wanting a small dog and why this cross?

Lots of little Russell's seem very prone to it....back legs...do a little skip or hop when they're walking. One bitch of mine had her back leg pinned by the vet either due to this or something similar. My other bitch damaged her back leg last year and it looked like luxating patella, but quite bad, it would give way and cause her to flop, I gave her plenty of rest and slowly built up her exercise, she's much better now, but it occasionally still catches her out and gives way. The last thing I wanted to do at her age is have her operated on, unless absolutely necessary. I'm always surprised

My Favourite Lamping Vidio ---Have A Look

Think two were hancocks -
To me little old style jack Russell's set the bench mark for working rabbits through thick cover because in general they're custom made for the job and generall the best at it..., but there's always going to be a compromise and that's why I can totally understand why some prefer spaniels etc, but what I can't understand is why some want a rabbit bushing dog and get a terrier that is from digging lines.

Tatsblisters......what size your bitch spaniels make,,,,,is it your mate who had the springer whippet...if so how's she doing.

Just take her in the local park or some where there's no game around for awhile first.

Anyone Know Any Good Kc Working Whippet Breeders In Kent/sussex?
wuyang replied to AshR1's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Everybody goes about it differently, Personally I'd just go worker to worker that's doing the job now... Wouldn't give two hoots about previous bloodlines. Have a look on the working whippet forum, usually they will announce litters plenty of time in advance, but be careful a few people on there knock them out for the £££££....... Genuine blokes will give you the chance to see them working and will be breeding to keep one back. It's amazes me how many when I was looking were breeding their bitch and not keeping a pup. Good luck,,, cracking little dogs if they have the right temperament. -
3/4 collie?

Who? If you don't mind me asking.

Got one here now 2 years old. So sensitive it unreal, she's a bit better than she was, but it can be real hard work sometimes.......shame because other than that she's really nice natured. One thing that really annoys me is if it's heavy rain when where out go out she goes into a different mind set and may just sulk about when off the lead or just sit down shaking, sometimes she just snaps out of it, so odd. Other than time and encouragement it can be a battle and one that isn't won, but more of a compromise if you can put up with that.......it's a pain.

I like little old fashioned jack russell terriers for tight cover......there's a good little bushing section if you haven't seen it yet.
-
I know I rant on about small old lap dog style jack russels, but they really give me so much enjoyment when bushing. I'm so lucky to own my little old bitch. It is personal preference and I'd gladly work either, but for the tight stuff there's not a spaniel on this earth that would move so naturally through it working rabbit. The slow pace of these old lap dog style jacks really suits me well.....they're just custom made for bushing rabbits....simple.

Can't think of a better place to spend the early hours of Christmas Day....nice.

if its deff a whippet then, mike brown stuff are supposed to robust type of whippet few lads on here run them, think bit of bull in there make up gens back. Ive seen racing none ped whippets males 30lb that would pile into foxes no prob, i had none ped bitch 20in 20lb great little bitch good on rabbits. But the males prob bit better for any quarry it sees.! Ive seen a few posts on MBs Whippets have Bull in them, is this true, where does this info come from? Me........everybody has there own opinion, but mine is just based on what I have seen....rightly or wrongly

Just get off working parents....

Don't think there's much difference in lurchers/whippets below 20 inch, think either will do the job he wants. If I was doing more lamping then I would opt more in favour of the lurcher, but I would also be going for something with a bit more height. Whippets are cracking little workers.

Whippet sounds ideal for him. My old one had good skin for whippet and only tore it once as a pup and he was worked hard as I was a teenager at the time and that's all I did. Some recent ones I've seen don't seem to have as good a coat or skin. Mine was from a show breeder called ann knight, but she passed many years ago, she bred nice robust whippets....tough as and keen as.
