Why not have 2" cut off to start with? Try it for a while. You can always cut more off but you can't stick it back on!

I'd say yes. From all I've seen, 1:10 gives the best compromise from 32g to 48. Berger supply bullets from 25g - awesomely fast! - to 58g. They recommend 1:9 for the heavy rounds; 1:10 - 1:11 seems fave for the sensible weights in between. Start with a decent action, nothing flash, put a Border/Archer 1:10 on it and upgrade the action as you go. As ever, just my opinion. Wha'? Someone makes a sensible comment? I'm 62, at university and I am surrounded by well fit 18 year old girls. My rule is, I can look but I'd better not touch. My point on this thread is that the 57 yr old guy who now walks with his legs crossed was the "boyfriend" of the 17 yr old girl. If a 57 yr old man had made a serious pass at my daughter when she was 17 I'd have kicked the livin' bejasus out of him. Helmut took it to it's logical extreme.

Not dumb questions at all mate. I've done a lot of research on this! I'd say if you wanr to stabilise heavier, ie longer, bullets, with a manufacturer's barrel, go for 1:10 if you can. Basically, the faster twist stabilises heavier bullets better. So if you are planning to shoot 40 gr at ~200 yards 1:10 will be the dog's dodgy bits. 1:11 minimum. Border/Archer barrels are expensive. They are also the best. Even American wildcatters for 'em big style. For max performance you need 26"

1 in 10 should stabilise from 28gr Blitzking to 48 gr SPBT FMJ. It's worth bearing in mind that a Border or Archer barrel will be exactly the twist rate claimed. An xyz barrel can be a long way off.

Nope. .240 is legal minimum in England for all deer species. Agree about the SGC though. Legal minimum for muntjac and CWD in England and Wales is .220" CF with min 1000 ft.lbs ME. The OP doesn't have a snowflake in hell's chance of getting .270 on a first FAC. Nor will he get conditioned for deer without either monitoring or a DSC. Go for .22lr for wabbits, .223 for fox.
