You can't really get one gun to do both. The ideal calibre for rabbits is .22lr. This will kill fox if, and it's a big if, you are a good shot, at up to 40 yds at most. As said, if you are shooting fox you really need a centre-fire. .22 Hornet would cover both, but you are looking at hand-loading. The bigger CFs will give you instant minced rabbit. Your best bet for one calibre might be .22WMR. The 30gr HP will drop a fox clean at up to ~100 yds. and not cause a lot of meat damage to rabbits even with a body shot. And as it's not a very popular calibre you should be able to pick one up at a go

Members of the Armed Forces are Govt employees. There are soldiers fighting in Afghanistan right now who, if they survive, will come back from their tour of duty to be told they are redundant, receive the legal minimum payment and be told that the pension they get will be less than half what they were promised. The amazing thing is the sheer power of the Labour Government. At the same time that the UK went into recession, all the Pacific Rim "tiger economies" collapsed! The US went into the deepest recession since 1987! The Japanese Nikkei Index dropped to its lowest level since 1986! Every economy in Europe went into negative growth! Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain went into total economic meltdown! All Brown's fault! Now let's look to the future. The USA has been throwing money at the economy, creating jobs, and getting the economy moving. Obviously the wrong thing to do. No cuts? Tut tut.

Anything over ~14" loses velocity. With the charge all consumed the friction in the barrel slows the bullet. I'm open to correction here, but I believe that the legal minimim barrel length is 16" in Ireland, hence 16" on CZs. Border Barrels, who know a bit about it, taper hone .22 barrels for use with lead bullets only. Jacketed supersonics will damage the rifling and the jacket. The improvement in accuracy is only noticeable on the range. The quicker swing of a shorter barrel is much more valuable in a field rifle. I started a thread a while back asking people what calibre they would have if they could only have one rifle. The .243 was the easy winner on its own, but counting all the .220 CFs together, that's Hornet, .222, .223, .22-250, and .220 Swift, they just pipped the .243. The rimmies were a poor third. Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice.

Either "AOLQ" as Matt and Evo say, or ask at your interview for "Opportunistic" fox, explaining that while you won't be going out for fox, if Charley sticks his head out of a hedge 40 yards away he won't be pulling it back! Hargreaves.. - Home Office guidelines for FEOs, which a lot of FEOs never read, state that rimfires should not be granted "for the purpose of" shooting fox, which is probably the source of your confusion. Basically, they don't want trigger-happy idjits wounding foxes with longrange shots and leaving them to die in agony. No more do people on here. Ric

Markha - this shows how ignorant some FEOs are. They'd probably refuse .220 Swift because it's too small. 4250fps mv, 1605 ft.lbs me. Ho hum. The regs in England & Wales for Muntjac and CWD allow "Calibre .220" centrefire, minimum ME 1000ft.lbs.

The dog pictured in the OP is achondroplasic. It has a severe genetic fault which results in its limbs never growing to adult length. It should have been put down at birth. As it gets older it will be in permanent pain. Ric -
