Fair play to you. Can you find a .22 target club you can get to? You can usually have a few sessions where you just pay for ammo. The guys there would be able to answer your questions, easier than posting back and forth, and they would teach you safe gun handling. Don't get me wrong here, I not calling your Da, but if you can say you learned at a club it will go down well with the police when you apply. All the best, and keep us posted! Ric

Up to 40yds max if you get a clean head shot. Really only for an experienced good shot. Not recommended, and the police rarely grant fox for a rimfire. .22lr is THE rabbit gun, and any of the .220" CF for fox. Ric

T'other way round. Faster twist to stabilise longer, ie heavier, bullets. It's the sectional density that matters, the ratio between weight and cross-sectional area. I would have expected your 1:8 to be ok with 75gr TBH Ric -

Ricky - Assuming you meant .22lr, long rifle, which is a rimfire cartridge, then I stand by the figure of 100yds as a practical maximum for field use. Past that, the drop is so steep, and gets even steeper so quickly, that you simply cannot be sure of a clean kill. Some shooters can go to 110 or even 120yds but they know their guns and the terrain well. At 400 yds a subsonic .22lr bullet is still travelling at ~500fps and carrying 25ft.lbs of kinetic energy, enough to kill a man let alone a rabbit, but that doesn't make it a 400yd tool.(It does explain why backstop is so important. From the other side . . . Back in the '70s I was running my own business. A 19yr old lad came in, looking for a job. Any job, he had no special skills. As said. Set it up with your RFD. Arrange for him to collect guns and sell them on commission. I think you can leave a sealed envelope with your will, to be opened only after your death, with the place where you keep your cabinet keys written in it. Check that with your legal beagle. Remember the boys can get very arsy about telling WAGs where keys are kept! Ric
