  1. what makes you say not much jaw power ?
  2. i ran a deerhound x collie, grey. mid 90's. big dog took charlie single handed for a pastime. ran well on big ears too. he stood about 28". his litter brother was a little bigger and heavier and still took charlie sh after suffering a broken neck.
  3. itching to go out last night but baled as it was still too warm. looking a bit different now though must have had 2 inches of rain overnight and its till pi**ing it down now. everythings looking good for tonight. nice and cool here now and the rain will help. forecast cloud, 9 degrees and a bit of rain and a light wind for tonight. we're in
  4. Then I never explained right W99.... Don't expect your dog to 'see' squatters as you can, clapped tight, novices 'can' see feck all. When they move is when your dog will see, especially if your controlling that head... Though what they can smell is not whats wanted here if thats what you are referring too...? Squatters 'may' come naturally, though, in some cases they may not... Do we need to go into that detail... think we're at cross purposes here. i'm with giro . what we mean is the closer you are to the rabbit when it gets on its toes , the better the chance of the d
  5. the OP aint commented again yet. we still dont know how old the dog is or how much its seen
  6. i never advocated walking squatters up for the dog to pick em up sitting. the dog learns quicker when it realises whats at the end of the beam. if a bunny gets up 10 ft away its gonna twig pretty quick.
  7. i appreciate both your comments. those dogs took every fox we came across so did it for us. i'm just a bit old school. doesn't help that everyone i come across seems to run a bull x at the minute. i've said before and i'll stick by this....what do folk think were used before bull x became the must have dog ? having said that i appreciate there must be some good bull x around. but i just aint seen any down here
  8. had deerhound x collie/greyhound mid 90's. rabbit hare and fox no issues. took foxes single handed and ended it smartish. never ran him on deer as there was no opportunity. big animal around 28". never got knocked up at all. his litter brother took foxes after suffering a broken neck. no need at all for a bull x with that sort of dog.
  9. i always reckon a year up and a year out with dogs. he's a way to go yet.
  10. over the last 2 years i've seen plenty of dogs from good working lines binned. way too much expected from dogs that have had no input from the owner. give a good dog man a hancock dog and it'll run rings round any dog from working lines owned by a numpty
  11. my dog's about 15 months and only been out on the lamp about 6 times and not long sessions either. he started off exactly as you are stating. he didn't see sitters either at first and wasnt looking down the lamp. had his nose down too . different dog now. he knows the score alright. even heard one get up in the stubble to the side of me last time out. so i turned the lamp on to that one and he had it. i'd persevere and pick your slips. no point slipping it on something she aint seen . walk up as close to sitters as you can. soon as the rabbit's up slip her. it'll soon get the hang of it.
  12. not uncommon for lurchers of mixed breed to have a dash of collie in there. i'd bank on the eye coming from collie. its also not uncommon for lurcher owners of mixed breed to miss out or add in particular breeds. when lurchers are bred to lurchers pups can swing towards any breed in the mix. collie blood aint a downside .
  13. what age is the dog ? how many times has it been out ?
  14. not had any experience of beardie crosses but i have heard similar. i'd rather a biddable dog . cant see many benefits of a lurcher deciding to cock a deaf un. There definately CAN be benefits. I like a dog to be fairly biddable myself BUT when it comes to hunting up a good dog knows a lot more about where to be and what to do than we do. That's surely why we use dogs instead of hunting up ourselves!! i can see where you're coming from there. i don't need a dog to hunt up. lamp off and the dog's back. even in the day i want my dog to know his place.
  15. sometimes you have to put up with the moon. hard ground's another matter. only you can make the decision whether you run the dog or not. the ground here's hard but expecting rain this weekend so i may be out
  16. it is rob big pisser tbh thats all his fitness gone out of the window it is what it is mate. get the dog right and take it from there.
  17. bit of a pisser when they get knocked up. especially at the beginning of the season. all the best
  18. not had any experience of beardie crosses but i have heard similar. i'd rather a biddable dog . cant see many benefits of a lurcher deciding to cock a deaf un.
  19. cheers lads. really taking my time with this dog. this weekend looks to be much colder so i'll be out for a fair night with him. he's everything i hoped he would be. i have 2 lamps a 1000000 cp lazerlite running a cluson lithium 9.8 amp. and a plr400 pistol light from cluson. only really been using the plr400 up to now. as the season goes on and the bunnys get harder the lazerlite may come out. but at the minute he's taking the rabbits nice and quick
  20. vetbed . a roll to do the sleeping box is cheap enough on fleabay. i got one that i cut into 3 bits. if he pulls one out and it gets wet and mucky its straight in the washer. another one down for the night.
  21. as said earlier start as if it were a pup. basic commands ,stock breaking, recall etc. the instinct to "chase and catch" will be there, you just need to put the rest in. no reason it shouldn't do well as long as you put the time in. ferrets are something else. you have to teach him to leave them be. that may cost you a ferret or two
  22. rolled up newspaper soaked in milk. but only goats milk as the enzymes break the ink down. and only broadsheets not tabloids as they are easier to digest
  23. good luck with the pup. took a neighbour's young daughter to fetch a whippet pup years ago. from working parents somewhere up near leeds or wakefield. made a useful looking animal. she just wanted it for a pet . nearest i ever got to owning one.
