2 memorable trips out for me. 1st was ferretting with my daughter when really young. we took her little mate too. netted up and put the ferret in. only realised the that we'd forgot the spade. anyway the jill had bottled up and we found a battered bit of a public footpath sign and started digging. when we broke through the jill was hanging onto a rabbit so lifted the rabbit out with the jill hanging on. next thing 3 rabbits bolted stright out of the same hole, all jumping about 3 foot in the air. kids faces were a picture and i manage to catch the 2nd one mid air. 2nd and probably most memora

the beam is narrower than the lightforce . but i think rated about the same distance. for the money its unbeleivable. not see me carrying anything the size of a satelite dish anymore.

this lamp is spot on for rabbits. will light up a rabbit easily at a couple of hundred yards and the dog too if you're not careful. pockets easily and weighs nothing. no good for lamping from a vehicle though if thats what you want. for lamping on foot its what i'll be using this season

always like to see kids getting involved young. my daughter wanted nothing more than to come out ferreting with me at 5 years old. nice one

Chilling Out After A Couple On The LampDewclaw69 replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs yep you might just be right there. something in his character , always wanting to please ( can only be the collie ). always run deerhound or beddy crosses before. they have always seemed much more laid back. he's a big hearted dog too and has some stamina. couldn't be happier and going to enjoy my lamping with him. he's only going to get better yet he's still better now than a couple of dogs i've seen recently. but he's well trained, fed well and in good condition so all that helps.

yeah guess its horses for courses. mine is 3/4 bred but probably heavy on the collie side . stands at 26. loads of drive and clever too.
-
	noted cheers
-
hard call that. 3/4 will give a potentially racier dog. guess you just have to look to see what the pups are like. some will be heavier set than others. the collie grey i have has a lot of the collie traits. 15 months old always on the go and a bit like a kid with adhd and he's 3/4 bred grey collie. I wouldn't want any more collie in him . he learns fast and he's quick too. all the best rob

can't say enough about this dog. 15 month locally bred collie grey. not been out for about a month with the heat and bony hard ground but had an hour early last night and he's back into it straight away. still giving him the best slips i can but he's way quicker now and smarter too. not sure why but i'm getting so much more from this dog that other lurchers i've kept just didn't have.

i've had 2 beddy whippets. neither ever opened up on the lamp but they were both fit dogs, good ferreting dogs too. cant see any reason a beddy whippet run in small fields on realistic slips wouldn't make a good allrounder. whatever you put over the whippet it will slow it down unless its another running dog and has said before a whippet is game enough anyway. can't see any point at all in a bull x whippet. sure some lads run em and love em, just not my choice. that's mainly as i choose to run the type of lurchers that were used before the bull x became popular

regarding the litter wastage, the OP did not indicate he had a bitch to breed from. his first post did ask about greyhound or grey whippet cross. my comments were based on bringing in an uknown bitch. in that instance the only known blood would have been the collie .

just ran stubble tonight. walking on it sounded like walking on lego bricks. no trouble for the dog and bunnys in the freezer.
-
the conditions are still not right but i nipped out with buck for an hour. we've had rain and i have a few fields of stubble i've been itching to get on that have softened up nice. last time out was about 4 weeks ago as its been so warm but it started chilling down nice so grub time came and went and he knew what he was in for. still a bit funny , cool enough and no moon but a starry sky. as we got on the land a fog started to fall so i knew we wouldn't have long. tried one grass field and not a thing around.so onto the stubble. happy days, eyes everywhere. he's still ponly 15 months so i'

Anyone Wait For Perfect Conditions ??Dewclaw69 replied to whitefeet4190's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs i'll be out tonight. looking not half bad here.

the last lurcher i had from a pup i fed on beta. followed the guidelines for the age. my current dog is on raw. if i ever had a pup again i'd feed raw straight away.

same old question. the genetic make up of the dog / breeding has got to be a major factor. but as we all know there may be very few if any out of a litter that will excel. proper training can make a good dog better. poor training can also fu*k up a great dog. the genes or make up of a dog may give it great prey drive, instinct and stamina but there's more than that to make a great dog. i wouldn't fancy chasing a dog round a field all night trying to prise a mangled rabbit from it ( and i've seen it happen). neither would i fancy a dog that showed a bit of a fancy for sheep ( seen that happ

looking forward to about 14 hours of rain forecast over thursday night through to friday afternoon. temperatures looking to drop nicely and there should be plenty of cloud around. bloody dog's like a coiled spring and couldn't be in any better nick pre season.
-
as you want to use one of the working collies i'd make sure the only other things in the mix are running dogs. if you breed from your mate's bitch you know what you're getting. use a lurcher bitch and a collie stud and its anyone's guess which way the pups will throw. good luck
-
a straight collie grey or whippet grey is a pretty specific type of dog. the collie in the main will provide the brains along with a bit of rubustness and stamina. i can't see any point in trying to re invent the wheel. no offence meant to the OP here as i can see where he's coming from but like i said before, the amount of time, needed, the hassle, along with chancing he'll pick the right pup out of the litter in my opinion aint worth it. he'll have to pass on the rest of the litter and dispose of the bitch. if i were looking for a collie cross lurcher i'd be off to see the hancocks not trying
-
sorry to hear that mate. hope he mends ok. right bloody hassle pups
-
i'd go for a greyhound cross. i'm taking it that you'll be bringing a bitch in and using a collie as a stud. cant imagine the farmer being too happy about one of his working dogs whelping lurcher pups bit of a long term plan though. you'll end up with a bitch you didn't want and a litter of pups to get rid of and you still have to bring your pup on. you might have trouble finding a bitch worth breeding from. if i were in your shoes i'd be looking at finding a pup from a collie grey mating that someone else had bred. have a look at hancock's website. at least you can make a decision on the a

nice to see someone getting out. watch the ground though. bone dry and rock hard here.
-
good advice from kev there buy a good painting or print for the wall.
-
i have a copy of this somewhere you could have. it was given to me and i'd like to pass it on the same way.
