  1. cracking topic Tommy. all the best to everyone. bring on the cloudy dark nights
  2. its basic behavioural stuff. pup won't come back, gets a thrashing, doesn't come back cos it thinks when it does that's what happens. only worth chastising a dog/pup when you catch it in the act. mate of mine used to shout and ball at the dog and whack it when it didn't retrieve. guess what ? it never did till it died. . seen him chase all over fields to get rabbits that the dog caught. funny as fook but didn't half know how to spoil a nights lamping.
  3. looks like i'm in good company. plenty of old farts like me still at it.
  4. Yeh god forbid anyone under the age of 50 have an opinion or have any experience to speak of i have a mate who's only 24 and lives for his dogs and he's a good lad. not on here though
  5. didn't want to pi$$ anyone off by asking the question. just reading some posts on the forum it seems there's a lot of younger folk on here with strong opinions. suppose its the way things are now with everyone on social networking sites etc. mods ought to delete it really.i can see it getting a bit hot later after a few alcopops
  6. they'll get another cut of grass here. out last night and a couple of fields need a proper cut ( for me n the dog anyway ). plenty of corn still standing though. they started again yesterday but heavy rain knocked em off. dont reckon they'll stop here till september.
  7. genuine question lads. just curious. my low number of posts on here ain't anything to do with my age or experience, just the period of time i've been on since i found the site, and the amount of info now available on the web. i've had lurchers for 40 years ( 48 now ) and currently bringing a young dog on to lamp.
  8. best dog i ever had deerhound x collie x grey was at his best at 5 and worked on till 9 . at 5 he had the right mix of fitness and sense.
  9. my uncle was a right old poacher my 8th birthday present was a beddy whippet pup. spent my childhood ferreting with him. 40 years on and still love it. my kids have followed on too. my daughter used to come ferreting with me from the age of 5. she's moved away from it now but my lads both shoot and lamp the dog with me. all my kids grew up eating game. never saw a pot of baby food.
  10. i had a buffalo smock. light and warm as toast. ebay's the place. there'll be some ex squaddie getting rid of some kit.
  11. another 2 last night as well. not so many around but he had what he was slipped on. he's getting smart quick too. he's spotting the sitters and not running at em, more running a line to intercept em.
  12. i'm running a 12 month old collie x grey . only been out 3 times and he's wising up big time. first time out, all misses. next two times he's had bunnies. instead of running at em he's starting to run to cut them off now. no reason a pup with lab in it won't learn quick. keep with it mate
  13. yeah some bullocks been moved on my permission. opened up another 3 fields for me. and its humping with em
  14. nice and cool here tonight, lots of thick low cloud and a spit of rain and a light wind blowing so i'll be off out
  15. mine is out of the run all the time we're around. in and out of the house ( back room only ) as he pleases ( weather permitting ) . at 10 at night he's in the run and its grub time. in the run all day while we're at work. never a peep. suits us
  16. i now feed late at night and if lamping, after the dog's been out. that way he'll get the most out of the grub after a nights work. depending what time i'm going out , he might get a snack tea time. my house dog gets fed mornings
  17. grisport have a good range. i got the crusader last year. warm, waterproof and supple with a deep vibram sole. my mate had meindl and killed em in a season
  18. yeah really looking forward to it. numbers are well up here. still a lot of corn around yet to cut and the rain's delaying it a bit. dog's in good nick and gagging for it now
  19. just 12 months and coming on a treat. he takes a crap photo though. never stands still long enough. the daylight pic is about a month old and he was moulting heavy and his coat looked dull and crap. different story now and he's fit too.
  20. we're lucky here i suppose. healthiest population of rabbits for 10 years or so. gonna be a nice winter
  21. thought i'd post this as its working big time for me. i've always fed complete but i have a dog that doesn't seem to do that well on it. asked for a bit of info and started feeding carcasses as well as the dry. big time success !! dog piling weight and muscle on , coat looking better, stools good and now catching. nuff said
  22. clulite plr400. rechargeable, no battery to hump about, weighs next to nowt and a 400m beam ( bit on the tight side ) but ideal for rabbits. i'll be using this more than the lazerlite. good results tonight, 2 slips , 2 rabbits http://clulite.cluson.co.uk/led-torches/578-plr-400-pistol-light-rechargeable.html
  23. well done on the bunny. best keep her close for a bit though. i have one the same but a year old. well pleased with it. first 2 tonight
