  1. why wouldnt a bull breed have the desire? how about a: 1/4 grey, 1/8 ridgeback, 1/8 bull(pit?) 1/4 staghound, 1/8 collie and 1/8 saluki? there you go - sorted! alot of the aussie and nz boys have good mixex for tough game. off the subject, does anyone and is it legal to hunt kangaroo?
  2. nice looking dog mate, what are you going to be working him on?
  3. any reason you want a border? they are plenty of terriers that will do what you want like beddlingtons, airedales etc, you've got to get a well bred one, mind.

  5. if thats the norm in ireland im on the next plane over! lovely dog...
  6. i do value my dog thankyou very much! anyone know if her problems are related or if its coincidence that she has them at the same time?
  7. good post mate i agree whole-heartedly, any dog can be changed in to an antisocial, aggresive nuisance, but any dog correctly brought up and socialised can make a pleasent addition to the home. the fighting genes in bull breeds do exist, but can be channelled into something useful, ie, working. these genes can never be fully suppressed. a good example is if anyone has ever kept a collie from working backrounds and either not worked it or not given it alot of exercise, more often than not, they turn out completely wild, or aggressive or lethargic. none of which a collie should be. any dog bre
  8. nice to see some very educated posts well done lads i think light mooching with pups is ok but much more can do more harm than good. of the larger breeds deerhounds are often quicker to mature than, for example, a mastiff(bad example i know) but untill 10 months ish are too mentally immature to do the job without getting hurt. my dad (an ex-royal marine) was telling me how any physically fit man can carry a gun and laden bergen over 30miles or so in the pitch black on dartmoor, or how most fit men can run 9 miles in 90 minutes(laden with over 100lbs). but this sort of men, he has seen come u
  9. if its got the right build, a work-bred collie can and will hunt quite well, as the herding instinct is only a slight deviation from hunting. my mates two collies are great dogs to hunt with, but aren't really fast enough to catch much pre-ban quarry. They can also be abit on the soft side which IMO is a very bad thing for a running dog to be.
  10. why the hell is your mate taking him to a shoot and running him at 14weeks? leave off till hes about 9/10 months before even training retrieval properly, i can sort of see it being a game, but no way at a shoot, or even with game at that age. JMO
  11. my pup is in the 20th day of her 1st season and has for the last few days decided that she didnt want to eat. i tried her on a different food and this worked for a while, but she will never eat all her usual amount. she is a retriever, so this is something special! i dont know whether or not it is related to it, but she has ripped out a patch of fur on her tail, near the base and has rubbed it raw. i have been cleaning it with salted water and tried some germaline, but as far as i can tell, it hasnt improved. any ideas? i wormed and de-flead her the other day. any help would be much appreciate

  16. the lurcher and the working longdog are, fair enough run of the mill type books but IMO this guy always adds something different in his books. read them both cover to cover. if you decide you want to buy them, i wouldnt mind sellin em mate!
  17. nice looking dog mate how old is it and how experiencd is it?
  18. im sure you've heard shitloads of this already mate, but running him this early on will ruin what sounds like a very promising pup. thing is, his bones will not have developed properly yet and will still be soft. anymore than playful puppy running around will put too much pressure on his socket-joints and bones, thus ruining him in later life by giving him hip and elbow dysplasia. it sucks i know, but you really should wait.
  19. looks like a great day out mate your pup looks very mature for 4months mate, good work with her!
  20. it dont look much like a goldie but perhaps. if not id say clumber spaniel/x or retriever x

  22. if its just rats and the odd coney you're after why not a terrier? they are more suited to the job, as they use their noses more. JMO
