? When I was a young'un, I pursued rabbits with impunity,.. my folks were smallholders in Rural Wales and nobody bothered about a lad taking a few rabbits and hares. Then, I was dragged (kicking and screaming) down South...? I took up with Chavies and old-style Roms, in the Hop Fields of Kent, and continued harassing the rabbits and game birds. Another move. to a tough council estate in Hampshire taught me, that some men would stop at nothing to prevent me from catching a few rabbits,..and I made regular appearances in the Magistrate Courts... It was getting emotional...?

Strychnine,..was a terrible thing... Back in the day, I felt that its usage was something (as a Rural Pester) that I should know about. I applied to be schooled and instructed in the safe use of this noxious substance in order to be granted a LIcence, to purchase a few grams. My Instructor was a well known MAFF officer, his particular specialty being, traps and trapping and of course, the legislation that goes alongside these disciplines. We did our test over some mole infested fields that I was already trapping... After a short while of discussion, the mixing of the

It goes without saying that, as a Kelpie lurcher aficionado...I would wish you all the very best, with any future breeding project, but, a friendly word of advice... The Working Kelpie in the UK is still an exceptional animal,..most specimens being used as they should be, on farms and smallholdings. As of yet, the breed has not been ruined by the pet and show fraternity. Most Kelpies will work livestock, to some degree...they are not a rarity, there are a fair few about, so it behooves us all, to make doubly sure that any stock being considered in any breeding plan is 100% st

Unity amongst Lurchermen, Mouchers, and Freelancers will never work,..and history tells us that it is 'Dog Eat Dog' World,..always has been, always will be... If you have permission to run your dogs over certain areas, then you have to guard it jealously,..and if you cannot, you need to take what you can, before some other fecker does... If you have no land of your own, then you must do,.. what you must do... Rules and regulations are not for me, as a lifelong hunter, I have my own, personal code of conduct, it is indelibly etched upon my heart... I'll walk alone,...until it is

Most lurcher lads require a Heavyweight whippet (bearing in mind, that in whippet parlance a Heavyweight racer is not necessarily a massive critter)...and that being said,..plenty of scratch racers will not have a problem allowing their jukels to go over a nice, quiet, sensible crossbred bitch..indeed, when I used on Supreme Racing Champion Country Music over my Heeler hybrid, his owner was only too pleased to let his future Stud have its first crack on a gentle type. Lads who wish to use the male dogs, 'At Stud' should always be wary of letting a young inexperienced animal get his face

Took dear old Dusty for her last walk today...? I was gifted this good-hearted pup, from a guy that in reality, I hardly knew. I traveled from my home in Hampshire to a Welsh Valley and collected her... She was a super friendly pup and fitted into our lifestyle, no problem. She served me well, for nine long years, we had some good times, caught vanloads of game and enjoyed plenty of laughs,... I am sad to say goodbye ... Alas, the Big C has no mercy and seems to enjoy inflicting horrendous pain.? I feel privileged to deny this heartless monster it's perverse en

As a lifelong trapper, and a one time Importer, of killing traps,..the humane dispatching of a pest species really is a subject,... close to my heart. I do believe that we can affect a change, by dint of modification to the strength and positioning of the striking bar in a Break Back style rodent trap, but I feel it is going to be a far harder task with a mole trap. Obviously, being set underground, in a tunnel environment, there is scant room to improve upon the most important killing aspect of the trap; ie the Striking bar... To kill any animal quickly with a steel trap, it is alw

Nothing better, seeing the dogs all well fed and snuggled down in the warm...

Goodonya for sticking in there guys? Back in the day, I once did ten straight days ferreting, one after t'other, working on a motorway embankment. Every fecking day was constant high winds and endless traffic noise It nearly finished me,..feck rabbiting in the wind...I fecking hate it...?

? Considering my great age and failing health, I feel it would be irresponsible to take on either of these fairly unique, purpose-bred canines... I'm quite content walking my wee Cur around the local park...?

The Working Kelpie is my favorite canine breed... However, I learned many years ago, to try and locate someone who owns a pure ACD, Kelpie, or even a Beardie Collie,...and to utilize the services of their dog to produce a working style lurcher, as opposed to purchasing a purpose-bred herder myself. These dogs have been selectively bred to fulfill a serious task and they do require a fair bit of mental stimulation and vigorous physical activity. In saying this,.I do love the real thing.......?

Beddy lurchers are grand sorts... I bred my own preferred types for years,.real sharp on the rabbit job,....reet honest old things...

Hi,..compared to my contemporaries, back in the 70s & 80s,.I've not owned that many...? I have worked most types and bred a fair few,..and obviously,...I have buried a fair few... Over the years, I have tried to keep the style of dog, best suited to the task at hand,.hence my harmless wee fireside curs of today...? Enjoyed most hybrids and crosses,...I've no one favorite,...they all served me well... ?

? Dogs are just like people,...some are tough as teak, whilst others,.. are not... We can breed for toughness and hardiness, of course,..but you have to work with the tools you have at your disposal, at the time... I grew up around hard-working sheep and cattle dogs, that were owned by even harder men...? In hindsight, they were treated abysmally,..and considering their value and usage to the stockman,..it was ridiculous how bad they were kept. Nowadays, I feel we are far more educated and enlightened, towards our canine partners. My dogs are now simply fireside pe

Colourwise, the Merle factor, (visually.. can frequently produce some really strange, end products... The general consensus is that the large plain patches on a particular individual denote the type. A dog with Blue (as opposed to Black) patches might be termed, a Blue Merle,..a Brindle hued specimen,..a Brindle Merle, etc, etc.. Whatever the result of this ancient gene,...they are all a wee bit different, in one way or another...?

The term Hard Blood whippet was an original phrase that I first coined when working on a planned, but sadly unfinished treatise, with the late Ted Walsh, the author of the embryonic manual,...Lurchers and Longdogs. Ted (an authority on the KC registered coursing whippet)was puzzled by the nomenclature and I had to assure him that these specialists, purpose bred, non-pedigree racing dogs definitely once included the blood of the Black Country Staffordshire Bull Terriers,.hence my choice of words,...Hard Blood...?
